Unfortunate name choice

A friend of a friend has just had a baby and called her Summer Eve.
Summers eve is a brand of feminine hygiene products in the US. Akin to someone in the US calling their child vagisil.
I have spent a lot of time in the states so it may not be something that many people in the U.K. know about. I messaged my friend to say oh my goodness I can’t believe the name they’ve chosen for the baby. Now my friend is (jokingly) pissed off that I’ve told her as she’ll not be able to think of anything else.
But I also have friends in the US who have friends/family members called Randy. Again completely different connotations in the U.K.

Not an AIBU but it has amused me

I’d rather find out from a friend then sniggering remarks when she’s a bit older!

TheHappyHerbivore · 31/08/2020 18:05

If she’s not planning on living in the US I can’t see it being a problem (except for the obvious issue of it being an unbelievably naff name)

leafeater · 31/08/2020 18:07

I met an American called Randy Pratt Grin

FancyARoot · 31/08/2020 18:07

YAB massively U to say that to her! As she’s clearly not American, nor does she live in America, it doesn’t matter in the least to her.

It was just a cheap shot.

BikeRunSki · 31/08/2020 18:08

Does your friend live in the US? If not, thrn it’s not a problem surely?

topofthewardrobe · 31/08/2020 18:08

How kind of you to make us all aware! I had an American boyfriend called Randy when I was in my twenties, when he met my Dad I just had to say 'This is my boyfriend, he's Randy' Grin

Poor Dad.

Rose789 · 31/08/2020 18:08

To clarify I said it to my friend not to the babies parents. I don’t know the parents hence the friend of a friend in my OP

@leafeater @topofthewardrobe I do so hope this is the same Randy Grin

Nope, different Randy's.

Starbuggy · 31/08/2020 18:15

YABU

There was just no need to say that, you weren’t being asked for your opinion on the child’s name, your comment was just nasty. If someone on the baby names board was asking about potential connotations of the name then fair enough, but not just a friend telling you that another friend has had a baby.

Even if the family or child moved to the US, most people wouldn’t know the middle name anyway so it wouldn’t matter.

Doccomplaint · 31/08/2020 18:16

Yikes.

WiserOlder · 31/08/2020 18:17

I think you did the right thing telling her. She can make the decision to change it slightly. Summer Jane, Summer Beth both have the same 'note'.
It is better to know.

Rose789 · 31/08/2020 18:18

Ahhhh man I was hoping they would be the same person. That would have been so strange.
The first time I met one of my friends she was talking about her boyfriend Randy and I seriously just thought she was a bit of an oversharer. I met him about 6 months later and was like ohhhhhh that’s your actual name. 15 years later and I still get mocked over it Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/08/2020 18:18

OP didn't tell the parent. She laughed at it behind the parents' back with their friend.

Pure class.

TinySleepThief · 31/08/2020 18:20

So to clarify, your friend messaged to tell you someone she knew has had a baby called Summer Eve and your response was to mock the name even though you don't know the mum and you'll never meet the baby?? You sound lovely.

BikerChick91 · 31/08/2020 18:21

Came across a baby girl called Nyx.

Poor kid Sad. I think the parents think it’s all cool, alternative and “goddess of the night”. It’s a headlice treatment in the US and also means “nothing” in several languages. I know a little Randy too.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 31/08/2020 18:28

Nyx? Oh dear!

Reminds me of that old joke about William Shatner marrying Stevie Nicks and them double-barrelling their names 🤣🤣🤣

Marcipex · 31/08/2020 18:32

I think Lilia is awful, also a feminine hygiene brand name, but I know two.

topofthewardrobe · 31/08/2020 18:34

@Marcipex

I think Lilia is awful, also a feminine hygiene brand name, but I know two.
I really hope that's not true!
RichPetunia · 31/08/2020 18:36

Shatner Nicks 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you 💫

Burnthurst187 · 31/08/2020 18:37

I don't think it's something you need to concern yourself with

Cocomarine · 31/08/2020 18:37

Summer Eve is shit because it’s, well -summer eve.

But it’s not at all the same as Vagisil as:

  • Summer and Eve are common names (Eve especially so!)
  • Vagisil is totally made up AND shares the first 4 letters with vagina

You’re way OTT. If they were actually planning to call her Summer Eve (not Summer) I might mention it, in case the brand launches here. More likely I’d mention it as Summer Eve is... summer eve, so crap!

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 31/08/2020 18:37

Presumably Eve is her middle name, so most people will just know her as Summer. People rarely find out your middle name. And school kids won't know about the US feminine hygiene product. So no issue really.

Marcipex · 31/08/2020 18:39

@topofthewardrobe yes it’s true.

katy1213 · 31/08/2020 18:39

I'd have been laughing behind their back even without the unfortunate connotations! It's a dreadful name!
