Unfortunate name choice

A friend of a friend has just had a baby and called her Summer Eve.
Summers eve is a brand of feminine hygiene products in the US. Akin to someone in the US calling their child vagisil.
I have spent a lot of time in the states so it may not be something that many people in the U.K. know about. I messaged my friend to say oh my goodness I can’t believe the name they’ve chosen for the baby. Now my friend is (jokingly) pissed off that I’ve told her as she’ll not be able to think of anything else.
But I also have friends in the US who have friends/family members called Randy. Again completely different connotations in the U.K.

Not an AIBU but it has amused me

The problem is that the internet is everywhere.

PablosHoney · 01/09/2020 19:14

And? It is a feminine hygiene product from OPs home country and she found that amusing, whilst it’s not high brow humour it’s not like she said what a common/chavvy/hideous etc name.

SoPanny · 01/09/2020 19:21

Hmmmm, I think you were a bit U to snigger about it but would I have done the same? Perhaps.

Years and years ago a friend of my then boyfriend had a baby and called her Anousha. Except she spelled it “Anus-ha”.

I had to alert him to this as she was away to register the birth the next day and i remember saying to him “you have to intervene it do it kindly”.

Fair do’s, he did and the “o” was duly used, avoiding her daughter a life of being teased and to much thanks and relief from bf’s friend (who wasn’t the best at spelling).

FelicisNox · 01/09/2020 19:33

Hmm Hmm

keziahthecat · 01/09/2020 19:33

No one knows your middle name and very few people will know the connotations of that name here. It can't be the same as calling her vagisil as both Summer and Eve are at least nice names.

Byrtie · 01/09/2020 19:43

It can't be the same as calling her vagisil as both Summer and Eve are at least nice names.
It's probably closer to calling your daughter 'Tammy' if your surname is 'Pax'.

Localocal · 01/09/2020 19:58

I think it was unkind to tell her. I'm American, and I admit my mind went straight there when you said the name. But it's not exactly the same, and she may not use the middle name, and who uses a douche anymore anyway? Do they even sell it? Or do you just vaguely remember the ads from childhood? I would certainly have left it alone. Why rain on hr new baby parade? If the child finds out someday I'm sure she will find it funny.

I think you owe her a huge apology for being so insensitive. It's too late to change it and she can't un-know it, and even if she could change it she won't want to explain it to people. So you have properly spoiled something special for her.

PablosHoney · 01/09/2020 19:59

She didn’t tell her.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 01/09/2020 20:14

A quick Google search shows it is still readily available so people must buy it.

You can even get it on Amazon

Wrenna · 01/09/2020 20:16

I don’t think you wbu. I’d want to know.

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2020 20:22

Oh come on. She didn't laugh to the parents faces.

Are you seriously telling me if a friend said they friend had names a baby Ann Summer (for example) and they didn't know the connection took wouldn't mention it?

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2020 20:24

Might add I do actually love the name though!

Byrtie · 01/09/2020 20:25

@Localocal - what are you on about? It's not like she told the mother of the child. Are the names of your friend's children really that special to you?

SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere · 01/09/2020 21:02

I keep thinking of Fanny now! No comment... Wink

Lollipops1987 · 01/09/2020 21:10

Not quite the same but years ago i went to my friends for a drink and she had her friends staying over from America, who on several occasions throughout the evening told me i was full of spunk. It was only later on in the night i found out that it was a compliment, meaning I'm fun, rather then them being sex pests!! We still laugh about it now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Localocal · 01/09/2020 21:33

Sorry, OP. I misread your post and thought you had messaged the new mum about the name. I see it was a third person you messaged, so hopefully no one has mentioned it to the baby's mother. I still think it's wise to ask the friend you told to keep it to herself, just to be sure.

Purplealienpuke · 01/09/2020 22:31
I knew a Teresa Green as a kid. And worked with a Tracey Tracey. I think we should be grateful we are allowed to choose our children's names, some countries have a list you can pick from!!!
ivegotdreadfulpmttoday · 01/09/2020 22:45

A friend’s granddaughter was named Pita and I couldn’t help pointing out the Mumsnet meaning 😳

Vinomummyinlockdown · 02/09/2020 01:55

Well all these other hiliarious names are giving me a great middle of the night giggle! 🤣

Marshmallow91 · 02/09/2020 02:15

I once in a professional capacity met someone who had a name equivalent to sparkly rainbows - she was a fucking horror of a woman.

But OP, you should have just said "that's nice", instead of being horrible about a child you don't know.

TulipsAndLilacs · 02/09/2020 02:26

I didn't know this but would want to be told so i had the option of changing it as many people will come into contact with other nationalities through work, travel, friendships, moving abroad etc

Carouselfish · 02/09/2020 02:41

I wish someone would bring out a range of sanitary products called Amelia.

netsybetsy · 02/09/2020 02:54

Yeah I've heard of Summer's Eve and I'm not American nor do I have American relatives. You can buy it on Amazon UK and see the adverts on YouTube. It's a douche product and has deodorant or wash or something to match.

netsybetsy · 02/09/2020 03:05

Lilette is a name. It's also a tampon brand Lil-let

WiserOlder · 02/09/2020 08:14

Nobody would use that now though, not even as a nick name.
