Unfortunate name choice

A friend of a friend has just had a baby and called her Summer Eve.
Summers eve is a brand of feminine hygiene products in the US. Akin to someone in the US calling their child vagisil.
I have spent a lot of time in the states so it may not be something that many people in the U.K. know about. I messaged my friend to say oh my goodness I can’t believe the name they’ve chosen for the baby. Now my friend is (jokingly) pissed off that I’ve told her as she’ll not be able to think of anything else.
But I also have friends in the US who have friends/family members called Randy. Again completely different connotations in the U.K.

Not an AIBU but it has amused me

DuckonaBike I also used to know a John Thomas many years ago - and his surname was - wait for it - Cock!!! I really am not joking. My friend who married his brother insisted on them changing their surname to Cox.

How often to people announce themselves as 'first name, middle name'? Hardly ever, or never.

Summer strikes me as a very American-style first name. Certainly more popular there. So actually very normal and acceptable, if and when she meets Americans.

Still, 'Miss Summer Eve' does sound pleasantly like 'midsummer's eve', so that's nice.

StrikesMatches · 31/08/2020 20:45

@ShakerCan

Small child in UK called Jenny Taylor

When you hear it you can’t I hear it Blush poor kid when some school mate twigs.

Can't unhear what?
User43210 · 31/08/2020 20:46

Tbh I think you did the right thing. It's best to know in case she does go to the States. Hopefully your friends can kindly tell her friend to make her aware.

DopamineHits · 31/08/2020 20:51

It's best to know in case she does go to the States.

There's very chance she'll be made aware of it without needing to leave the country. I'd heard of it and I've never visited the US.

Franklyfrost · 31/08/2020 20:53

My friends called their child Melena. Shock

eaglejulesk · 31/08/2020 21:01

You are being ridiculous - not an issue as far as I can see.

augustusglupe · 31/08/2020 21:02

I’m laughing so hard at these and so pleased that Randy Bumgardener is a real person!! Grin

percheron67 · 31/08/2020 21:10

My best friend's Mother had a stud dog named Randy. It was sometimes embarrassing to do recall with him.

eaglejulesk · 31/08/2020 21:12

Incidentally I think Summer Eve is a very pretty name, but from reading various posts on MN about baby names it seems the UK is rather conservative when it comes to names.

Iamnotminterested · 31/08/2020 21:12

Jenny Taylor - genitalia.

Odile13 · 31/08/2020 21:13

I think Summer Eve is a lovely name. I’ve never heard of the products. Personally I wouldn’t have mentioned it in the text, seems unnecessary.

ddl1 · 31/08/2020 21:15

My inner giggly 12-year-old makes its appearance whenever I hear the name of the American Ambassador to the UK: Woody Johnson! Sounds more like a porn star than an ambassador. President Trump (fart) is bad enough!

Rosebel · 31/08/2020 21:22

I went college with someone called John Doe. He got a lot of ribbing. Just lucky he didn't have sister called Jane.

IDSNeighbour · 31/08/2020 21:22

Randy Bumgardner and Randy Bishop Shock Shock Grin Why on earth would these people not change their names by deed poll asap!? I mean I suppose Randy can't have the same meaning in the US for it to be such a common name but still, surely they know?

I think Summer Eve is fine. She'll just be Summer and most people won't have heard of a brand name in the US. I might assume she was born on 21st June though.

I feel sorry for people who have names that are perfectly normal and lovely then something happens or gets invented to make their name suddenly funny or awkward - classic examples being Alexa and Isis I suppose.
And one of my friends teaches a child called Covid!! It's spelled with a K but pronounced the same. It's always been his name (obviously!) and probably nobody's ever given it a second thought but now, all of a sudden, it's become a problem name.

WhatamessIgotinto · 31/08/2020 21:24

Why on earth would you piss on your friend's chips like that? It's completely irrelevant if she lives here and was just a shit thing for you to do really. Maybe that's why you did it.

Polkasquare · 31/08/2020 21:24

Well, I hope the baby's parenta don't see this thread.

dollybird · 31/08/2020 21:24

I once heard of a young woman called Summer Loving

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 31/08/2020 21:29

I think it’s a lovely name, I wouldn’t have said anything but we’re all different!

VeryQuaintIrene · 31/08/2020 21:31

My lovely BIL is called Randy (short for Randall) and I've learned not to find it at all funny (I am British, he's American.) But there's all sorts of traps in the most innocent of names - cf. the shortening of Michael Hunt...

AuntieStella · 31/08/2020 21:37

If you google Summer Eve, you get the hygiene products as first hit.

The DC (and all her friends/frenemies) will find this out at some point.

I do think someone ought to gently check the parents are aware of what they are inflicting on their DD and yes, I do mean inflicting, because this is a really unfortunate w'll-known product to share a name with. OP is only being unreasonable because she is gossiping about it to third parties, rathe bthan biting the bullet and doing what needs to be done

momtoboys · 31/08/2020 21:41

Hopefully they will just call her Summer and not Summer Eve. it would be like calling her a douche! LOL (I couldn't help myself!)

LadyH846 · 31/08/2020 21:42

@leafeater

I met an American called Randy Pratt Grin
Lol!
Meowandthen · 31/08/2020 21:47

Ooh the sanctimummies are out in force tonight.

People travel and one day someone will tell the child what her name is associated with, or she’ll find out. I doubt she’ll be thrilled.

LadyH846 · 31/08/2020 21:48

How embarrassing. You were right to mention it.
