Unfortunate name choice

A friend of a friend has just had a baby and called her Summer Eve.
Summers eve is a brand of feminine hygiene products in the US. Akin to someone in the US calling their child vagisil.
I have spent a lot of time in the states so it may not be something that many people in the U.K. know about. I messaged my friend to say oh my goodness I can’t believe the name they’ve chosen for the baby. Now my friend is (jokingly) pissed off that I’ve told her as she’ll not be able to think of anything else.
But I also have friends in the US who have friends/family members called Randy. Again completely different connotations in the U.K.

Not an AIBU but it has amused me

I knew someone called Spring Flower, it would be hard to find someone less like a spring flower.

Touca · 31/08/2020 19:33

If she’s not in the US, I don’t see a problem
I dont think anyone is saying it's a problem, just a case of a name that's fine in one country or culture having an unfortunate meaning or connotation in another. It happens a lot, I've never previously seen such a sour-faced reaction as has transpired in this thread though.

gigi556 · 31/08/2020 19:34

I'm from the USA and I never would have made the connection. I'm not familiar with the brand.

DolphinsAndNemesis · 31/08/2020 19:35

I would make the immediate association with Summer's Eve, but many people in the U.K. wouldn't.

Poor little Jenny Taylor! That is a truly unfortunate name.

howlathebees · 31/08/2020 19:39

I don’t think it s much of a problem

Mamette · 31/08/2020 19:40

I’m loving all the Randys. Randy Langer is my favourite. Please let him visit Cork some day. Although he doesn’t sound like he has an Irish heritage 😂

There used to be a man in my previous workplace called Ivor Ashe.

imissthesouth · 31/08/2020 19:41

This gave me a little chuckle. Hopefully she has no plans of living or holidaying in the USA.

Suzi888 · 31/08/2020 19:42

I’d at least want to know! Tell her.

Marmunia1975 · 31/08/2020 19:53

My hubby has a US colleague called Ginger Bush and another called Dick Wang.

DuckonaBike · 31/08/2020 19:54

Isn’t there a US politician called Randy Bumgardner?

A friend of a friend was called John Thomas. How we laughed.

Personally I enjoy a childish snigger.

SneakyBlinder · 31/08/2020 19:56

My NDN, when I lived in the US was called Rainy January. I always thought it was the coolest name!

Now, not so much Hmm

KormaKormaChameleon · 31/08/2020 19:59

Two words.

Randy Bumgardner

tabulahrasa · 31/08/2020 20:01

Joby is a hilarious name if you’re Scottish... but apparently it’s a really name...

herethereandeverywhere · 31/08/2020 20:06

I once worked with a Randy Bishop (Canadian not American).

I haven't RTFT but Pippa has been a popular name for the last several years; it also happens to be French slang for 'blowjob'.

herethereandeverywhere · 31/08/2020 20:07
  • actually, it might be 'Pip' not Pippa - but an inevitable shortening.
Leaannb · 31/08/2020 20:08

I live in America and I never would have made the connection

EmilySpinach · 31/08/2020 20:12

I only know about Summer's Eve because of this SNL parody, 'Autumn's Eve'.

InvincibleInvisibility · 31/08/2020 20:12

Im in France and know several women called "Fanny". That's unfortunate.

Another more funny one is a bloke called the French equivalent of Tom-Dick Harrison (Tom, Dick and Harry).

midsomermurderess · 31/08/2020 20:13

Is Eve her middle name or will she be called Summer Eve all the time? If the former, few will know what her middle name is. People tend to lose interest after childhood. And how many British people will know that product?

malovitt · 31/08/2020 20:25

@Backtoschoolnotsoonenough

Ds's primary school friend was Rory Lyons...
That made me laugh.

EleanorOalike · 31/08/2020 20:35

@worriedmama1980 ?

Wrong thread?!

viques · 31/08/2020 20:36

@Histrionicz

Oh calm down, it’s not like they called her Preparation H.
Shirley surely that's a boys name, poor girl if she had been called it. Grin
PaternosterLoft · 31/08/2020 20:38
