Unfortunate name choice

A friend of a friend has just had a baby and called her Summer Eve.
Summers eve is a brand of feminine hygiene products in the US. Akin to someone in the US calling their child vagisil.
I have spent a lot of time in the states so it may not be something that many people in the U.K. know about. I messaged my friend to say oh my goodness I can’t believe the name they’ve chosen for the baby. Now my friend is (jokingly) pissed off that I’ve told her as she’ll not be able to think of anything else.
But I also have friends in the US who have friends/family members called Randy. Again completely different connotations in the U.K.

Not an AIBU but it has amused me

Small child in UK called Jenny Taylor

When you hear it you can’t I hear it Blush poor kid when some school mate twigs.

CaMePlaitPas · 31/08/2020 19:05

Don't be cruel OP. It is absolutely not the equivalent of naming a child "Vagisil". It is a pretty name.

GabsAlot · 31/08/2020 19:06

i know a randy hes gorgrous was a model

does it matter what it means in america-they say fanny for bum there i think thats hilarious

Histrionicz · 31/08/2020 19:06

@katy1213

I'd have been laughing behind their back even without the unfortunate connotations! It's a dreadful name!
Great for you.
Goodgollymiss · 31/08/2020 19:09

I think a lot of the comments are a bit harsh... your not exactly bullying the baby and I'm sure the parents aren't too worried what you think... you just made an observation you found amusing... I would prob do the same to be honest

GreyishDays · 31/08/2020 19:09

@Marcipex

I think Lilia is awful, also a feminine hygiene brand name, but I know two.
@Marcipex is it? In what country?
Cryalot2 · 31/08/2020 19:11

Its a beautiful name, the poor mum choosing a pretty name that has no product connection in UK yet people get cheap kicks about it and then boast about such.
How could you make fun of a childs name. It's not like many celebs which are ott.

SarahBellam · 31/08/2020 19:11

I know of a woman called Pat Mycock.

GabsAlot · 31/08/2020 19:11

at least shes not fanny schmelar

MagicSummer · 31/08/2020 19:13

@GreyishDays - yes in this country Lilia was a well known sanitary towel in the 60s/70s - in a pink cardboard box with white feathers adorning it. My mother made me go to the local haberdashery shop and get them for her when I was small - I absolutely cringed having to ask for them!

DontTouchTheMoustache · 31/08/2020 19:14

Small child in UK called Jenny Taylor

Oh, I guess that’s long enough ago that the child’s peers or even most of their parents won’t remember though.

@TheHappyHerbivore

If she’s not planning on living in the US I can’t see it being a problem (except for the obvious issue of it being an unbelievably naff name)
That.

'Randy' is a diminutive of 'Randolph'. I don't quite know how Randy Crawford fits into that, she obviously wasn't a 'Randolph'. However I know Americans aren't familiar with our urban use of 'randy'. Hi, I', Randy! Imagine.

jessstan2 · 31/08/2020 19:20

I'm Randy (well I'm not actually....)

BayLeaves · 31/08/2020 19:20

You would have been unreasonable to NOT tell them. Any thinking human being would like to at least make a conscious decision about a name like that....

Why? I don't think most Brits would have ever heard of that product. Loads and loads of normal names and normal words have rude meanings in other languages, it's no big deal. Telling them is just shit and rude. The only correct response when a friend tells you their new baby's name, is "aww, that's lovely". Even if their name was literally "Vagisil" you refrain from making a stupid comment, unless you don't give a shit about their feelings. I can be pretty socially inept at times but even I know that that's basic social skills.

DimidDavilby · 31/08/2020 19:21

Well you must be lovely. Congratulations Summers mum if you're reading.

Touca · 31/08/2020 19:23

Meh, I think it's funny. A lot of bores on here today.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/08/2020 19:25

I read of an American called Randy Ponce.
(I know it’s probably pronounced Ponthay in Proper Spanish, don’t know how it’d usually be pronounced in the US though.)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/08/2020 19:26

If she’s not in the US, I don’t see a problem.
