Unfortunate name choice

Rose789 · 31/08/2020 18:03

A friend of a friend has just had a baby and called her Summer Eve.
Summers eve is a brand of feminine hygiene products in the US. Akin to someone in the US calling their child vagisil.
I have spent a lot of time in the states so it may not be something that many people in the U.K. know about. I messaged my friend to say oh my goodness I can’t believe the name they’ve chosen for the baby. Now my friend is (jokingly) pissed off that I’ve told her as she’ll not be able to think of anything else.
But I also have friends in the US who have friends/family members called Randy. Again completely different connotations in the U.K.

Not an AIBU but it has amused me

@sapnupuas

Honestly, I think it's pretty fucking disgusting that not only have you made fun of the name behind their back, but you also decided to do it here too, where it'll be obvious if someone knows the parents.

Did you really expect a load of people to join in your bullying of new parents and their name choice?

Oh, come on. It's funny.

The vintage TV ads for Sumner's Eve douche are a hoot, too, via YouTube.

@edenhills

Sorry to miss the point of thread but i just googled summer eve. Vaginal doushing! I am in my 40s and have never heard of such a thing. Why would anyone want to do that!
You've never heard of it?

It's no longer recommended but is a very old practice. I imagine there still are many commercial products out there that cater to it.

interest12 · 01/09/2020 14:54

Wow calm down

Durgasarrow · 01/09/2020 15:14

I'm American so I can't stop laughing thinking of a child named Summer Eve. Even if she doesn't live in the U.S., our two countries are very connected. Naming your child Summer Eve here would be like naming her "Douchebag." There's a legendary Summer's Eve commercial where a girl askes, "Mooommmm, did you ever get that 'not so fresh' feeling," which is so hilariously cringy that it is a punchline even now. OMG, I just found it:

And this commercial--Oh My Lord. This poor child.
Durgasarrow · 01/09/2020 15:20

And here, for your horrible amusement are parody ads.
One about the "not so fresh" feeling.

The other for Autumn's Eve Pumpkin Spice from Saturday Night Live.

Yeah, I think you are doing your friend a favor, OP.

PattyPan · 01/09/2020 15:40

Yanbu, I’ve never heard of the brand but it’s a very naff name even without that. People seriously need to google names before giving them to their child. And name websites need to stop making up meanings - I always see x name means y in z language when it really really doesn’t.

Racinglikeapronow · 01/09/2020 16:10

I hate all these wishy-washy names - summer eve, Evie Rose, Mazie evie and million other ‘e’ names doing the rounds these days - jeez just give the child a proper name not a smushy ickle cutie name.

On topic I remember reading a magazine article about a couple who had to change their sons name - mr and mrs peacock unfortunately called their son Drew..

CatRamsey · 01/09/2020 16:23

The worst I've ever heard is Isaac Cox. I can never hear Isaac the same now which is a shame.

LittleMissMe99 · 01/09/2020 17:47

I think it was mean of you to spoil the name by bringing it up. She doesn't live in the US, so what relevance is it? Summer Eve is a really lovely name. It feels like you were deliberately putting a downer on it. Rude and uncalled for

ILoveFood87 · 01/09/2020 17:54

Very unfortunate name choice.

Bluntness100 · 01/09/2020 17:57

She will just be known as summer. It’s not really a big deal.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 01/09/2020 17:59

I knew a lockyer child. I wasnt sure I heard right at first as Id just given birth and could just hear "lochia."

Coldwinterahead1 · 01/09/2020 18:03

I know a Genna Taylor

Coldwinterahead1 · 01/09/2020 18:04

Issac Hunt is pretty bad also

pollymere · 01/09/2020 18:10

My Dad pointed out that Chelsea Paige sounded like a newspaper to someone. I nearly gave my poor child SEKS as initials. Someone needs to tell her!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/09/2020 18:17

My DMum's nickname for my DDad was Willy short for William Grin

Violinist64 · 01/09/2020 18:20

I always think it strange that some upper class people name their daughters Candida as it is also a name for an unpleasant infection.

Skysblue · 01/09/2020 18:20

It was mean to tell her that. Summer Eve is a lovely name and you just ruined it for her.

It doesn’t matter what it means in America any more than what it means in Kazakhstan. She’s not in either place is she.

Well done 🙄

Endoftether2000 · 01/09/2020 18:42

I know a Kimberly Clark and an Ava Gina😳. One friend thinking of names said what do you think to Philippa?. Pippa Pippa panty sniffer. No not a good choice 🙄. Names often remind us of old school nicknames and people that we loved or hated. Just to point out We loved and adored Pippa👌

Byrtie · 01/09/2020 18:44

It was mean to tell her that. Summer Eve is a lovely name and you just ruined it for her.
You're being ridiculous.

liveitwell · 01/09/2020 18:49

She will only be known as Summer to people who know her so the chances anyone would even make the link is tiny, let alone the fact that this isn't America.

If you look up every name to the Nth degree you'll always find something wrong with it.

december9 · 01/09/2020 18:55

I worked in a call centre previously where the callers name would appear in a big screen while they waited. They were all internal employees. We once had Randy Hooker in the queue, the person who eventually took it did well to stifle the giggles

nosswith · 01/09/2020 19:03

I wasn't aware of it, but at least it was not Anne Summer!

SomeOtherGirl · 01/09/2020 19:05

It's unfortunate that they called their product after such a lovely time of the day. If I ever want to say "I do love a summer's eve" am I now saying I love vagisil? Seems ridiculous.
But if the girl isn't American I don't see the problem. Even if she goes there she's unlikely to be introducing herself with her full name, just Summer, which is a common name over there.
I'd much rather be called summer than "trump" 😋

PablosHoney · 01/09/2020 19:12

Some of these responses 😂😂 bet you will turn up at the registry office and scream out abuse when they go to register the baby you hideous person. 🤣
