or 6 weeks if they broke quarantine twice.

AIBU to think thank goodness the rules are being enforced, and this should be happening far more widely.

Fines are massive as well, ten thousand £

Smile

This is what we need, a bit of teeth in the regulations

Larger in population size that is.

Callar I completely agree with you. Short term pain for long term gain. Over here we just find excuse after excuse all the time.

The people who think this scare me more than Corona virus ever will, we are willing to have our civil liberties destroyed for a virus that doesn't harm most.

Isnt it in Australia somewhere where police are smashing car windows and dragging people out of their cars for refusing to give names, addresses and reasons for being out? Huge fines as well. I was agog watching the dude on the news go on about it.

Hardcore places that aren't in England. It's like we don't take it seriously enough.

Yeah I wish we took it seriously enough to smash car windows and drag people out of their cars. that's my dream society right there 👌

Yeah I can see how it come across. It isn't what I meant though.

I categorically don't want that shit. It just seemed like 2 ends of extremes, where's the middle ground? What is the middle ground?

You cannot compare the Isle of Man to the rest of the UK. How would you lock it down to the same extent? Heathrow alone makes that impossible

Probably you can't. But the initial poster wasn't writing about closing the borders. The jail sentences were about refusing to isolate or other offences. For instance the people that travel and refuse to isolate on return, the ones who have been in contact with infected people who refuse to either isolate or take a test. The people who attend large gatherings, refuse to self distance or wear a mask. How do you deal with that? England's current response is, oh dear never mind, carry on infecting people. But jail/fine a few people and others might think twice. There is no deterrent currently.
And yes, I get the parallels with Nazi Germany, people informing on others, reduction in civil liberties etc. But what are you going to do, just keep going round in this circle of infection and lockdown? The economy is going to be crippled, and people's mental health is going to be wrecked because of a theoretical risk to liberty.
We look in horror at England, probably in the way England looks in horror at the US.

I got intimidated recently in a shop for wearing a mask by a bunch of dudes. I haven't been back to that local shop since.

Its like taking your life in your hands either way around here. I would like a clear set of guidelines on what to do.

Tis all.

@CallarMorvern there are people who cant wear a mask. Due to disabilities , medical conditions and a shocking heartbreaking case i saw on here of a man in his 80s who was orally raped when he ws 9.

Some people are exempt and shouldnt be forced to explain why. That is discrimination.

I think the middle ground would be people questioned for being out and about (when we were in full lockdown, using the Australia example) but in a civil way, and then turned around or fined if they were out without good reason. The number of police we have makes this impossible and people know it.

Stay home. For sure an economic depression never has any adverse consequences. Our mighty government lords will look after us. The money forest has yielded well this year.

I can never understand why some people see a problem with enforcing a law. Burglary is illegal and you get locked up for that. I expect burglars feel it's an infringement of their human rights.

Breaking quarantine is endangering other people so it's like Drinking & Driving. Hands up who thinks that is a human right?

and yes I've read 1984.

Seems like there’s a lot of dissenters on this thread
Are you all aware of tomorrow/ Saturdays protests at 2pm in about a dozen cities
Cardiff.. the castle
London
Brighton
Bristol
Newcastle
Leeds
Plymouth
There’s more, can’t think off the top off my head

@MrsTerryPratchett

I'm in favour of good guidelines.

I am not in favour of civil liberties being stripped with massive consequences if you disobey. Have people not read 1984?

I absolutely agree with this.

You think it’s ok for people to go to prison for leaving their house and walking the dog?

And before you come back with he had COVID symptoms!!!!! many symptoms align with the common cold. He was never proven to have it.

So he went to jail for walking a dog. That might be ok in your world but it’s not in mine. Maybe you should move to South Korea, sounds like you’d love it there..

Also agree with MrsTP, all those crowing in delight at this, will you be so happy when the rules keep changing and you fall foul?

Report
GlummyMcGlummerson · 07/08/2020 23:06

I think it's terrifying that people are supporting this and wishing we were more like the heavy handed countries where people get dragged out of cars by police for going out

HelenaDove I was orally raped, I have panic attacks, I have asthma, I am suspected autistic.

I wear a mask. Not everyone who falls into the exemption category needs to be exempt. Some I agree with but a lot are using it as a get out clause before trying.

That's the crux of it isnt it? The people know that theres fuck all anyone can do about it.

It would be nice to see something solid though. Nothing is ever clear.

Codexdivinchi I suppose you think it's ok for people to go to prison just for driving home don't you?

Just because someone is drunk doesn't mean you can keep them from using their own car to go to their own house!

They 'as rights they do! they is 'uman rights

Or so says every drunken idiot.

As for not whether they have symptoms that's beside the point. Do you know you are not allowed to drive through a red light even if there's no one about? You don't get to say "oh but it would have been ok this time"
