or 6 weeks if they broke quarantine twice.

AIBU to think thank goodness the rules are being enforced, and this should be happening far more widely.

Fines are massive as well, ten thousand £

This is what we need, a bit of teeth in the regulations

Posting about what other countries do is irrelevant. The IOM has been very serious about quarantine from the start, and people arriving had it laid out to them very clearly.

It isn’t going to happen in England.

I'm delighted for the people of the Isle of Man, but other countries, such as Spain, have been equally draconian and are still suffering. I think being a small island a bit off the beaten track helps.

I'm amazed at how happy you are about your rights slowly being taken away...

Are you for real OP? This is terrifying, not something to aspire to.

The Isle of Man came down hard and are now reaping the rewards. Life is back to normal. I have family on the island and they are enjoying a lovely summer with no restrictions around their towns.

I wish we had done the same.

Means tested heavy fine. What's Dominic Cummings' net worth?

Probably enough to pay off the national debt, as long as the banks take roubles.

@MrsTerryPratchett

Heavy fine - yes.
Jail - absolutely not

Christ! Apparently he’s on between £95,000 - £99,000 so yes definitely means tested Grin

Guernsey and the IOM have been strict since lockdown began and have eradicated COVID. They even have a bubble with each other to boost tourism.
They have the infrastructure to be able to do this - it wouldn't work here though.

No one has been ripped out of car windows on the Isle of man. With a population of around 80,000 and being on an actual island that has its own government, the borders were closed quickly as we have one hospital which couldnt of handled huge amounts of covid patients.

Most things are completely back to normal here with no cases for over 70 days. No social distancing ect. Compared to how family members in England are having to live in certain areas, im happy to be here.

We need similar for breaking quarantine, refusal to test or self self isolate etc. Of course you shouldn’t need harsh penalties as in an ideal world everyone one comply and there would be no selfish behaviour.

I am not in favour of civil liberties being stripped with massive consequences if you disobey. Have people not read 1984?

Yes.

But I've also read the Emergency Powers Act.

Sunset clause and all.

I'm curious as to why the absent op has found it necessary to dig up an article from April to coo alarmingly over.
I too find the gradual erosion of our rights, and the willingness of people to accept everything they are told, horrifying. I do wonder, if a government edict came down that was really off the wall - like not allowed out of your house unless you are wearing full ppe and a respirator, there would be posters on mumsnet cheering about it and anxious to dob miscreants in.
I think rules and regulations that dictate what you can do in your own home are a step too far anyway. It is so way out of proportion to the amount of covid now around.
Whare are these demo's then? I might go and join in.

@gamerchick

Isnt it in Australia somewhere where police are smashing car windows and dragging people out of their cars for refusing to give names, addresses and reasons for being out? Huge fines as well. I was agog watching the dude on the news go on about it.

Hardcore places that aren't in England. It's like we don't take it seriously enough.

I'm actually quite glad the police are doing that here.

This is only on Isle of Mann though, not mainland UK. I know several people who have been abroad and come back and gone straight to the pub/met school friends. One has even gone off again on another flight!

I suppose you could quarantine people in hte hotels which aren't full of homeless? There're probably some...

MrsTP is right, though. Don't go down that slippery slope especially when the example you've already set has been so bad.

Report
SunshineCake · 07/08/2020 16:23

Well,if everyone did what they needed to do there would be no need for fines and prison sentences.

Report
NiceGerbil · 07/08/2020 16:23

Hmm not sure about the not bothering with laws that aren't enforced.

Rape prosecutions and convictions are at a massive low and report says it's a massive problem. I wouldn't want to see it legalised though.

It was more that he ignored medical advice to get a test and to self isolate. Not that he took the dog for a walk. As a policeman we know commented, it's the same old faces. Most people would have been sent home with a warning. Fines and jail have been really rare, the government is far from Draconian.
The island's health service is really vulnerable, just 8 ICU beds for 80,000 plus inhabitants when Corona first hit. They knew they had to come down hard, otherwise it could have gone horribly wrong. The health minister has been brilliant.

Cam77 · 07/08/2020 16:26

Threats and fines are incoming because some selfish shits can’t be trusted to act for the good of others in their community, especially the old and vulnerable. Consequence - someone dies because Mr/Mrs selfish shit wanted to go shopping/fancied a day at the beach.

Laughable that some people compare this to 1984 or whatever. Have you actually read it?

Report
Reedwarbler · 07/08/2020 16:29

@Cam77 but you can go shopping or have a day on the beach. Why does that make you selfish? Or are you one of these people who is willingly holed up at home and think everyone else should be doing the same?
