or 6 weeks if they broke quarantine twice.

AIBU to think thank goodness the rules are being enforced, and this should be happening far more widely.

Fines are massive as well, ten thousand £

Smile

This is what we need, a bit of teeth in the regulations

@SunshineCake
Exactly. People moan about government incompetence (I agree with them) but then take zero initiative themselves. Eg, The idiots taking parts in marathons and going to concerts back on March during the onset of a global pandemic. Yes, the government should have stopped them. But wtf were people thinking? Use your brain ffs and have a drop of social conscience. Fact is people are NOT showing social responsibility by isolating after visiting pandemic hotspots, therefore Mr Big Government has to step in and tell them off like children with punishments and threats.

Cam77 · 07/08/2020 16:32

@Reedwarbler
Obviously I mean after visiting a hotspot. You should be isolating and not going anywhere unnecessary.

Bishoprick · 07/08/2020 16:42

Another one who agrees 100% with @MrsTerryPratchett

uniglowooljumper · 07/08/2020 16:45

@Cam77

Threats and fines are incoming because some selfish shits can’t be trusted to act for the good of others in their community, especially the old and vulnerable. Consequence - someone dies because Mr/Mrs selfish shit wanted to go shopping/fancied a day at the beach.

Laughable that some people compare this to 1984 or whatever. Have you actually read it?

Yes, have read it several times and recently re-read it. The community, you could substitute that term for Airstrip One, Oceania, whatever is required to whip up fear, ire and turn society in on itself. Easy peasy, much easier and cheaper and more effective than the ol' junta+militia state.

Inadvertently spread the virus, or just be thought to have done so, and you've just made the not too far-reaching juxtaposition of manslaughter, they're 'unpersons'.

We've even got the ever-changing rules, just like ol' Winston re-writing The Times.

Fucking terrifying.

uniglowooljumper · 07/08/2020 16:49
@Cam77 but you can go shopping or have a day on the beach. Why does that make you selfish? Or are you one of these people who is willingly holed up at home and think everyone else should be doing the same?
Akin to manslaughter! Unpersons!

MrsFogi · 07/08/2020 16:52

Whilst Dominic Cummings is still a key "member" of the government I think that the whole thing is a farce and it is hypocritical for people to be sent to prison for breaching quarantine whilst he was able to break lockdown and test his eyesight by driving!

Should we? Who says?

MrsSnitchnose · 07/08/2020 17:05

@Reedwarbler I'll send you a pm with the details of the facebook group who's organising them

echodot · 07/08/2020 17:07

I would happily do the job of checking if people are home when they should be Grin

ListeningQuietly · 07/08/2020 17:11

Dominic Cummings : Broke Lockdown - kept job, no penalty
Robert Jenrick: Broke Lockdown - kept job, no penalty
Niall Ferguson : Broke Lockdown, lost unpaid post, no other penalty
Stanley Johnson : Broke travel rules - no penalty

Until Cummings is sacked and punished its all a joke

and CIVIL LIBERTIES MATTER

redbushtea · 07/08/2020 17:20

This is chilling - 1984 coming true

Isolating sick people is quarantine, isolating healthy people is tyranny.

nocoolnamesleft · 07/08/2020 17:34

My elderly parents live on the Isle of Man. I think it's absolutely awesome that they're relatively safe. Keep it up IoM government! (Even if it does mean I still can't visit them).

Bishoprick · 07/08/2020 17:35

"frogs in a pan" is a very good expression, @ListeningQuietly

I was thinking of turkeys voting for Christmas.

boreda11 · 07/08/2020 17:36

I think someone was jailed in Guernsey I think for breaking quarantine.

I'd be happy with this, providing it started with Dominic Cummings and Robert Jenrick.

and CIVIL LIBERTIES MATTER

This is absolutely spot-on.

To punish the population for minor infringements when politicians and their aides haven't abided by the rules is both revolting and ridiculous. I'm all for high expectations within society and asking people to behave respectfully. But when the people leading our society and building the boundaries we should live within behave as though those rules mean fuckall, they can't expect cooperation from the population.

IncandescentSilver · 07/08/2020 17:58

I'm pretty sure that a lot of this isn't consistent with the ECHR. Restrictions on basic freedoms are supposed to be very short term only and imposed after clear evidence is produced by the government of an imminent threat to the safety of the entire population (not just less than 3% of it and usually wartime or a serious terrorist threat). Restrictions are also supposed to be reasonable and proportionate.

Things such as keeping outdoor, non-contact sports banned (except football of course) is unjustifiable when pubs are open. Its been particularly bad in Scotland, where you can get your eyelash extensions done or go for a drink in a crowded bar, but cannot run on a nearly empty athletics track or book an empty swimming lane, or compete on your horse on your own in an outdoor arena, or do a cycling time trial (where you are started 2 minutes apart).

Unsurprisingly, this has led to a spike in cases and a local lockdown. I do struggle to see how the Scottish Government can justify in law the ban on most sports when pubs are open. Perhaps they think the risk is from healthy, fit people training outdoors and it is mitigated by people with false eyelashes and nails getting drunk in crowds?

strawberrypip · 07/08/2020 18:04

this is horrific - definitely not something to be celebrating or aspiring to.

I cannot believe the brainless zombies we have become in less than 5 months.

Reedwarbler · 07/08/2020 19:09

@MrsSnitchnose Thankyou.

FizzAfterSix · 07/08/2020 19:10

Sounds terrifying.
Do you fantasise about living in North Korea, OP?

boreda11 · 07/08/2020 19:17

IncandescentSilver I agree about the inconsistencies of what has resumed. In England seemingly activities that are mainly ones men do seem to be prioritised over mixed and women only ones, and there has been no economic logic to them either.

HeIenaDove · 07/08/2020 19:18

It makes me fucking angry that we get the "all in this together" rhetoric when it comes to lockdown and face masks but when its something like social housing its "be grateful for what youve got" Some people had to do lockdown living in shipping containers , small flats with no garden but did follow the rules. Or is it guidelines because i get confused.

Despite this some of us are being told we are selfish simply because we are struggling to wear masks. NOT refusing. But wearing them and struggling.

Then there are people who are exempt and the abelism towards them is horrific.

I didnt break lockdown despite my elderly mum crying down the phone every few days.

But still not good enough.

What is really galling is all the ones who have spent the last ten years voting for individualism now having a go at everyone else saying we are all in this together. Yeah that must be why Jenrick and pals are going for another "bonfire of red tape" Cunts!

There is a lot of resentment brewing in poorer areas. Because some of us have more than reached our limits.

DipSwimSwoosh · 07/08/2020 19:20

Agree with Mrs TP

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/08/2020 19:23

I know it's the IOM and not the UK, but for arguments sake, I'll use the comparison anyway. Did Dominic Cummings go to jail or get a heavy fine.

islockdownoveryet · 07/08/2020 19:29

I think that ship sailed long ago when Dominic Cummings set off to ' test his eyesight' with no comeuppance.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/08/2020 19:30

I have mixed feelings about this. I want everyone to take the idea of quarantine seriously. Otherwise it is the compliant carrying the can for the people who don't give a shit. But where IS Dominic Cummings in all this?
