AIBU to hoard Douwe Egberts jars?

Just in case I need them for something?

They're so nice.

They have been converted into vases, pen jars, food storage jars on my open shelves, a spatula jar, a washing pods jar, a bath salts display jar... I use one as a giant glass of water as well!

A fair few empty ones are currently cluttering up my cupboard and DP is on the warpath to throw them away.

What else can I use the jars for to save them from the recycling bin this Friday?!

That's called low waste living :) reduce, reuse, recycle. My favourite are Bonne Maman jam jars. And large gherkin jars. I keep all my pasta, rice, quinoa, nuts, and seeds in the jars, homemade dips, leftovers etc. However I do recycle the excess if they don't fit on 1 shelf!

Holy shit, I do this.

I've found my people. Grin

I love those jars. A few Christmasses ago I was going through a tough time financially so I couldn't stretch much for teachers gifts. So I used the jars, put some pretty pebbles in the lid part, a few in a jar and then put a string of fairy lights in the jar, with the on and off switch at the top. Decorated the outside with some bits of ribbon and twine, things I had laying about. They were a huge hit and some even asked me to make more for them.

I keep tea and sugar in them as well.

If they change those jars I will be mighty disappointed.

OMG! I am the same. I have 4 that I haven't even found a use for!.
I agree they work really well as vases and I also use one as a glass for water.

CoalTitCafe · 21/07/2020 10:55

Yessssss, I'm not alone! Grin

I wonder if I could repurpose one for pot pourri?

I have the Orla Keily Douwe Egbert jars and they are fantastic!

longwayoff · 21/07/2020 11:04

My daughter was casting a disgruntled eye over my kitchen jars just 30 minutes ago. I hate disposing of a usable glass jar with lid and I also hate random open packets of stuff littering up my cupboards. So, everything hygienically stored in recycled glass jars. Large Hellman's jars very useful and random coffee jars also. Ditto jam and honey. I don't think I've ever bought a kitchen storage container.

What a stupid idea stares nervously at collection of cleaned out Yankee Candle jars

PicsInRed · 21/07/2020 11:10

This is either a club or a support group, not sure which. 🤔

You know that one day our grandkids will be like "what's with all the jars?" and our grown kids will whisper, "granny lived through covid, she doesn't like to talk about it". 😂

isthismylifenow · 21/07/2020 11:10

I saw on my last shop there is a jumbo jar size of Douwe Egberts too. My first though was, oooh I could keep loads in that jar!

Sparklesocks · 21/07/2020 11:12

I think it can only be a good thing to repurpose and reuse things like this Smile

I admit I hoard jam jars and Gu ramekins...but I don't actually do anything with them!! Just feels like I might need them someday...

Todaythiscouldbe · 21/07/2020 11:13

I've just counted.....6 on the worktop, 12 in the cupboards and 14 waiting to be used when I get around to it. I have 3 of the Orla Kiely ones, my pride and joy, the rest are plain. I love them, do not allow anyone to throw them away!

isthismylifenow · 21/07/2020 11:13

collection of cleaned out Yankee Candle jars

Ditto with the two (the coffee is so much more affordable) Jo Malone candle jars I have. Make up brushes in one and cotton pads in the other.

DD thought she was being helpful tidying and threw one away Shock Had to rake through the bin to retrieve it......

thismumismad · 21/07/2020 11:14

I've got loads. I print labels for them with my brother printer 🤣 . I really love the huge ones but they don't fit in my tea/ coffee cupboard.

isthismylifenow · 21/07/2020 11:14

3 of the Orla Kiely ones, my pride and joy

I feeling quite upset that we don't get these.........

bestbefore · 21/07/2020 11:16

I get the jumbo ones - see photo with wine bottle for scale.
I had some extra ones so offered them on freegle and they got taken for storage of craft stuff.

Yay MY PEOPLE!!

lidoshuffle · 21/07/2020 11:18

I've just googled; 3 old Orla Kiely Douwe Egbert jars for sale for £110!! Shock

MoaningMinniee · 21/07/2020 11:18

I don't actually drink coffee - but my mum and DP and one of the dd's all do!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 21/07/2020 11:20

If they're surplus to requirements, perhaps you could put them on freecycle / Olio? I'm sure someone else will make use of them without the need for them to go into the recycling system.

If you have DC and some glass paints you could sit them down and get them to design their own object d'art using one

IncyWincyGrownUp · 21/07/2020 11:20

I love the jars, but don’t love the coffee. Reusing them is a no brainier to be fair, much better than just lobbing them.

Solly76 · 21/07/2020 11:21

So glad it's not just me Smile

ChicCroissant · 21/07/2020 11:23

They are brilliant jars - I need to check my stash in the cupboard and repurpose some of them.

I have one OK jar (bought reduced price) and that's for caffeine-free (ground) coffee. I have got some chalkboard labels to put on the other jars.

SauvignonBlanketyBlank · 21/07/2020 11:24

I use Gu ramekins for my Chihuahuas water bowls.Perfect size.

Saladd0dger · 21/07/2020 11:25

Yes! We also paint them at Halloween and Christmas and pop the little battery tea lights in. Kids love painting pumpkin designs.
