AIBU to hoard Douwe Egberts jars?

CoalTitCafe · 21/07/2020 10:33

Just in case I need them for something?

They're so nice.

They have been converted into vases, pen jars, food storage jars on my open shelves, a spatula jar, a washing pods jar, a bath salts display jar... I use one as a giant glass of water as well!

A fair few empty ones are currently cluttering up my cupboard and DP is on the warpath to throw them away.

What else can I use the jars for to save them from the recycling bin this Friday?!

must admit that I always thought the small Nutella jars were meant to be used as glasses afterwards!

Of course they are - and save the lids as then they're perfect storage containers for half a can of beans or whatever.

OTOH, don't think any coffee jar is worth drinking instant coffee for.

isthismylifenow · 21/07/2020 19:40

@Tlollj

How do you put stuff in the lid *@isthismylifenow* ? I didn’t realise the bing thing comes off?
I just used a knife and prized the plastic piece out, and after I put the pebbles in I just glued it back into place.
Ragwort · 21/07/2020 19:45

I love them but not the coffee.

I manage a charity shop & do get rather fed up with all the donations of Gu jars, Charlie Bigham dishes, 'Pots' pots etc ... very hard to sell.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 21/07/2020 19:59

@Choccyp1g

DS loves the Charlie Bigham pies, and the pots are nice, but I have a problem with the unglazed ring on the bottom. Anyone else find it goes mouldy?
@Choccyp1g

I stand any dishes like that on the back of the oven for a day or two before putting them in the cupboard

But actually I have been meaning to relocate them to the bottom oven drawer for plate warming.

@Youcunnyfunt I want to see a photo of your fridge! Grin

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 21/07/2020 20:06

@IveSeenThings

Ah, interesting. Is it Dutch or something?
Yup! I'll do my best to transcribe/ explain how it's pronounced...

Dow-wuh Eg-berts

Dow rhymes with how. The g in Eg is pronounced like a Liverpool k. The e in berts is pronounced like eh? and the r is rolled like in many Scottish accents. Hope this helps!

IveSeenThings · 21/07/2020 20:15

Thank you letmegetthisrightasawoman! Smile

oakleaffy · 21/07/2020 20:21

Agree...~So pretty and useful.
However, if they have to go into recycling, they will be reborn into other things...they will ''Live On'' , but in another guise. 💕

namechange12a · 21/07/2020 20:26

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit I use the Gu ramekins for storing things in the fridge: chillies, garlic that kind of thing. I didn't know that Pringle lids fit them and am thinking about adding some Pringles to my shop just to get those lids.

pussycatinboots · 21/07/2020 20:27

@isthismylifenow

I saw on my last shop there is a jumbo jar size of Douwe Egberts too. My first though was, oooh I could keep loads in that jar!

Grin

I've got one!
MoaningMinniee · 21/07/2020 22:07

yup they get used for tapas stuff... or ashtrays in the back yard for everyone (including me) who hasn't managed to quit smoking despite the evil lurgy.

violetbunny · 22/07/2020 02:28

Does anyone else have the limited edition jar design they did for the Queen's diamond jubilee? It's so pretty Grin

rosiejaune · 22/07/2020 02:41

Well isn't that the point; that they are meant to be reused?

I wouldn't keep extra ones though; it sounds like you have plenty to be going on with, and if you still buy the coffee then there will always be more available if you need them in future.

So you could Freecycle the spare ones, or recycle them if nobody wants them. That way at least they are still being made into new things people do need, instead of gathering dust and taking up space in your cupboard.

No but I have got an Orla Kiely one. Keep castor sugar in it.
Rumtopf · 22/07/2020 09:44

I make macrame hangers and plant spider plants or succulents in them, and currently have 4 sat on the bathroom windowsill with plants in.
Why would you throw something so useful away? They're perfect for part opened packets of nuts or seeds etc.

Oldraver · 22/07/2020 09:53

I put things in the lid as well

I also prised off the plasitc bung trimmed of the flange and used it to sit my salt and pepper grinder in. It stopped random bits going all over the worktop

We aslo have Nutelle jars and bought a set of six form a charity shop a few years ago

CeeceeBloomingdale · 22/07/2020 09:55

I have a windowsill with loads on, full of my DD's 'treasures' w.g. pretty shells, stones etc

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 22/07/2020 09:58

SAME!!!
They look so lovely when the label is cleaned off & the seal is really good.
I had a stack of cotton face pads in one & it looked really fancy on the counter!
Good for storing rice, quinoa, lentils etc etc!!

CoalTitCafe · 22/07/2020 11:50

Wavescrashingonthebeach

Oooooh I think I have some face pads somewhere...

Love this thread, I'm always hiding my coffee jars from OH who threatens to recycle. I store all nuts and seeds in them, also hair bands and cotton wool pads.

Where can you get the giant ones from, i usually have the 190 g ones

Welcome to the club Grin

Someone said the giant ones are from Costco upthread.

I keep hairbands in an old William Morris chocolate box

I got a couple of giant ones in Tesco. I don’t usually shop there so don’t know if they always have them.

Grolsch beer bottles with the glass and metal handle swing top rubber seal makes good up-cycling sense or just repurposed as a cool iconic water bottle. The beer is pretty refreshing too!

Douwe Egberts Coffee Jars are best in class instant coffee packaging. Coffee is good for mass dried freeze variety.

However best food packaging repurposing are ceramic cheese (festive Stilton etc) that have either a matching ceramic or wooden seal tight lid. Harrods, F&M and Harvey Nichols etc. Incidentally Harvey Nichols food halls have great metallic reusable tins for coffee, teas and biscuits etc with stylus understated monochrome designs as preferable over the Harrods green ones.

Well I'll have no choice but to stock up on cheeses this Christmas...
