AIBU to hoard Douwe Egberts jars?

Just in case I need them for something?

They're so nice.

They have been converted into vases, pen jars, food storage jars on my open shelves, a spatula jar, a washing pods jar, a bath salts display jar... I use one as a giant glass of water as well!

A fair few empty ones are currently cluttering up my cupboard and DP is on the warpath to throw them away.

What else can I use the jars for to save them from the recycling bin this Friday?!

I saved some miniature gin bottles and use them as vases for small flowers.

Yes to the Gu ramekins for pet food bowls, also guilty of recycling those posh Douwe Egbert coffee jars for bathrooms stuff. We divided up bottles of wine between my collection of Bonne Maman jars for a Zoom wine tasting session at the start of lockdown, just the right size for 2 glasses! They've all been returned so we're going to do the same with a gin session. Normally the empty jars go to a friend with an allotment for her jams etc. I've even rescued my Dsis little coloured glass jars that hold those reed diffuser sticks; they make exceptionally pretty single stem/bud vases and look lovely grouped together Blush

TwoZeroTwoZero · 21/07/2020 12:07

We use those Gü chocolate spread jars as tumblers to drink from and their ramekins to hold sauces and olives etc when we have a picky tea.

KeepingPlain · 21/07/2020 12:07

Oh my god brilliant idea! Somewhere for me to store flours, sugars, pasta, rice etc! Grin

SharonasCorona · 21/07/2020 12:11

Nice jars!

Off topic, can anyone recommend the best instant coffee?

I’ve always been a tea person but have recently started drinking instant coffee at home.

mrsBtheparker · 21/07/2020 12:12

I use Gu ramekins

Individual pate pots, tiramisu, etc for a special dinner. I have loads of them. When I was still at the chalk face the lady who cleaned my room asked if she could have the Douwe Egbert jar when I'd finished, she wound up with loads.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 21/07/2020 12:12

I use mine for pitting spices in - I buy the large packs of garam masala etc for curry. I wish Douwe Egberts did the decaff in larger jars though (I'm sure they used to). I can't have caffeine

YeahWhatevver · 21/07/2020 12:15

DH takes jam jars, screws the metal lid to the underside of a shelf in the garage and fills the jar with all sorts of stuff.

He's got all different screws, nails, washers, drill bits, string, tape, clips in each of the jars.

I remember once putting a jar back in the wrong slot and he was less than chuffed. Seems the garage organisation system is sacred!

We've not thrown a jar with a screw lid out for years.

I am gobsmacked about the price of those Orla Kiely jars. I have two in the kitchen, just with cous cous and rice in them. I had no idea that they were of any value at all!

@eatyourcake

That's called low waste living :) reduce, reuse, recycle. My favourite are Bonne Maman jam jars. And large gherkin jars. I keep all my pasta, rice, quinoa, nuts, and seeds in the jars, homemade dips, leftovers etc. However I do recycle the excess if they don't fit on 1 shelf!
LOL, just thinking about my Bon Maman habit then saw your post. I've re-used them for decades of marmalade making, herb storage etc. Did you know you can buy replacement lids for BM jars

www.lovejars.co.uk/faq/jar-lid-size-gauge/

you need the 82.

Giggorata · 21/07/2020 12:20

They are very nice jars. I have a lot of then or similar candle jars in my bathroom, with things like spare toothbrushes, plasters, soap, etc in them. As well as millions in the kitchen.
I also have loads at work, which we use for LED fairy lights, when we have big events with the kids.
I have noticed they are being sold on eBay, not just the Orla ones.

sergeilavrov · 21/07/2020 12:23

I’m so happy that people take the labels off Grin

I used those terra-cotta style tapas bowls to create a palette on our DS’ art station - they’re great for mixing paints and wash really easily.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 21/07/2020 12:27

Oral Keily ones were a limited edition collab at least 3y ago unfortunately

Lougle · 21/07/2020 12:30

We keep demerara sugar, granulated sugar and salt in those jars. Have done for years.

GreyGardens88 · 21/07/2020 12:32

Get rid

I prefer getting real vintage jars and bottles from ebay that have been sourced from Victorian rubbish tips

flirtygirl · 21/07/2020 12:33

I soak the kids for a day or so in washing up liquid and then no more coffee smell.

I love them and have never bought a bottle of De. I get them from my sister and probably have 12, Op I'd have your excess off you.

I use them for tea, coffee, sugar, salt etc.

I'm aiming to have them in a pantry cupboard also. My sister gives them to my mum also and we have been known to say "it my turn to have the bottle".

Now I think about it, I'd like more for bath salts too.

flirtygirl · 21/07/2020 12:34

No I don't soak the kids, only lids.

Adamandtheaunts · 21/07/2020 12:40

YABU but only because I love the coffee and the jars buuuut I can never get the bloody lids off with my weak hands. Husband is relatively strong and had the same issue.

SEE123 · 21/07/2020 12:41

@sparklesocks I use the gu jars for making individual treats e.g mini cheesecakes & banoffee pies

🙋🏽‍♀️ fellow DE jar hoarder here - also good for that opened bag of dishwasher salts. I write on them in permanent marker and remove it with a touch of nail polish remover. 😬
DH also desperate to throw the empty ones out but there's always something to use them for. 😁

Youcunnyfunt · 21/07/2020 12:44

I save and reuse them, though I don't drink much coffee.

My OH is so tidy with the fridge, he saves plastic and trays that fruit/veg/meat come in and when we're done with it, it'll get washed and used to separate and store things that come loose or in bags. Everything is neat in sections. It's quite hilarious and quite ingenious.

We reuse a lot of things. Ice cream sticks etc are used for plant labelling, wooden skewers reused for plant supports, yogurt pots as ramekins (or plant propagation pots).

Magicismagic · 21/07/2020 12:48

Love my Douwe Egbert jars, I’m nearly at the bottom of my latest big one and I’m so excited it’s really sad.
I have ones in my kitchen so matching sized ones for tea, sugar and actual coffee. Bigger ones with different flours and sugars in them. rice and lentils in others. A couple on my desk with pens, markers in, some crafty ones with threads in them and glitter pots. One in the bathroom for cotton pads.
I have to pounce on the empty ones otherwise DH uses them for screws or drill bits, he has acquired 3 of “my” jars that way and he doesn’t even drink coffee.
They are mine, all mine!

NoraEphronsneck · 21/07/2020 12:48

I use Gu ramekins for used teabags near the kettle and for dips/sauces.

magicstar1 · 21/07/2020 12:52

YABVVU OP. I don't drink Douwe Egberts coffee....and now I want all those jars. I'll have to buy some to try.

excuseforfights · 21/07/2020 12:53

I also like the little glass pots of pudding from Pots & Co, they have lids too.

Yesyoudoknowme · 21/07/2020 12:57

I am now very upset that I only drink Kenco coffee. However I could ask my DF to keep his - I do his shopping so he would get what I buy him, and if that included pretty coffee jars it would be a sheer coincidence...
