AIBU to hoard Douwe Egberts jars?

Just in case I need them for something?

They're so nice.

They have been converted into vases, pen jars, food storage jars on my open shelves, a spatula jar, a washing pods jar, a bath salts display jar... I use one as a giant glass of water as well!

A fair few empty ones are currently cluttering up my cupboard and DP is on the warpath to throw them away.

What else can I use the jars for to save them from the recycling bin this Friday?!

Old Yankee candle jars make decent vases too....

I also don't drink DE coffee, but think I'm going to have to start! I was just looking for a storage jar for the utility room!

At Christmas I often buy the camemberts that come in a terracotta dish for baking - reusable for so many different things, including future camembert baking!

NewtonPulsifer · 21/07/2020 13:10

@ChicCroissant I have the teabags in the large jar and just tip it to get the bags out. I did think about getting a posh pair of sugar tongs to use too BlushGrin

bestbefore · 21/07/2020 13:10

Knew I had another one!

Oh yes, I didn't even mention the "pantry" collection, did I? I have a tiny kitchen as it is and this habit isn't helping!

I use the Pastoret pots to hold brown sugar cubes (tan brown) and used tea bags (dark brown). The clear ones get used for tiny ice cream portions, little snack of a nut mix, etc...

Thanks Newton, I do have toaster tongs which I was eyeing up. I think I'll use some for teabags and see how it goes. No chance of DH getting his hand in and I wouldn't want the dregs of the teabags tipped over the worktop every time we make tea Grin

I've got a different OK jar, the one with the yellow flowers.

Instant coffee - Tesco gold, I really like it more than the DE but the jar is tall and thin with a plastic lid, no good for storage

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 21/07/2020 13:48

Dh takes all mine, he has them in the garage and has "stuff" in them. No idea what. But he'll get another one this week, I need coffee.

WaffleCash · 21/07/2020 13:57

One reason I miss working in an office, I used to nab all the douwe egbert jars.

I refuse to buy gu or pots and co puddings as I can't bear to part with the jars and I have way too many.

I've done some repurposing but still have far more than necessary

I use Gu ramekins for used teabags near the kettle and for dips/sauces.

Snap! That's exactly what we use them for!

I have quite a collection of the small DE jars, as I have to have decaf. Before I became ill, when I used to make lots of jams, I always saved the Bonne Maman jars to pot them in.

We've also bought the small, decorated Nutella jars, to reuse as small tumblers.

JeremyIronsBenFolds · 21/07/2020 14:06

Wow, I have the full set of Orla Kiely jars currently sitting empty - I hoard these things but never find a use for them. I'm going to check out eBay...

Sadly I don't think anyone will want my collection of Gu ramekins.. I swear those things breed in the cupboard.

Spacie · 21/07/2020 14:12

I still have most of the Kenco jars I acquired years ago when my ex drank the stuff.

Morrisons own brand peanut butter jars were great (wide mouth) but they changed them back in March. When I noticed the new ones I grabbed all the old ones I could. The checkout operator probably thought I was panic buying peanut butter.

TheBeeatAmbridge · 21/07/2020 14:56

I keep make-up brushes in one Smile

Eatcabbage · 21/07/2020 15:05

@eatyourcake

That's called low waste living :) reduce, reuse, recycle. My favourite are Bonne Maman jam jars. And large gherkin jars. I keep all my pasta, rice, quinoa, nuts, and seeds in the jars, homemade dips, leftovers etc. However I do recycle the excess if they don't fit on 1 shelf!
I do this, Douwe Egberts from a friend, Bonne Maman and large gherkin jars. Spooky.
pregnancydiet · 21/07/2020 15:08

My exes mum used to use old Nutella jars as small tumblers

missmouse101 · 21/07/2020 15:10

Some are fine, the rest are clutter if they're not needed. Clear out!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 21/07/2020 15:19

Hmm ... I grind coffee beans - but I might get some DE for coffee or chocolate cake or ice cream ...

About fifteen years ago I liked a particular brand of granola that came in really strong plastic canisters. It stopped being produced about a decade ago - but I'm still using the canisters. They've graduated from pantry to freezer.

But I have a cupboard full of empty jam, honey, peanut butter jars. Infinitely useful. And every Christmas I have an excuse for buying Harvey Nichols disruptively expensive port because those little bottles make such beautiful vases ...

IveSeenThings · 21/07/2020 15:23

I like this thread! Smile

And that link to the jars website is wonderful, thank you 2bazookas

Love the pantry pic OP.

My lentils etc are all in random unmatching jars, and we use ground coffee which comes in bags, so no chance of changing them.
I get MIL Douwe Egberts, because I don't know anything about instant, and I heard DE was good, but I buy her the refill packs not jars. Just wondering if I could change...

IsMiseMorag · 21/07/2020 15:38

I use them to store all the above, plus

kitchen elastic bands (those good strong red ones you get on asparagus bundles and post)

those little sachets of flower food you get on supermarket flowers that otherwise leak all over your knife drawer

random charger leads/headphones that get left around the house

dog treats by the door

But now I'll be prising off the tops to fill with pebbles/red smarties/other cool things!

whatshebininagain · 21/07/2020 15:55

All our spices, tea, coffee, flour, etc is in DE jars. I've made solar lights by cannibalising Garden stakelights so the gubbins fit in the cavity in the lid then make a hole in the plastic seal to poke the led "bulb" through.

I use nail varnish as glass paint to decorate them..

Lidl do versions of the little puddings in a shot glass for 79p, you'd pay that for a pudding or glass on their own.

Crankley · 21/07/2020 16:01

I save a lot of jars because I make scented candles. These are one of my favourites after I've eaten the content's, of course Grin:

PoloNeckKnickers · 21/07/2020 16:04

I have several of the jars storing other things. They are far to nice to put out with the recycling- its the glass stopper that does it for me.

TheFaerieQueene · 21/07/2020 16:04

I haven’t read the whole thread but the Charlie Bingham ceramic pots for individual pies are brilliant as ramekins or pots for nuts when having drinks etc.

Crankley · 21/07/2020 16:10

TheFaerieQueene I agree re the Charlie Bingham pots. I'm not so keen on his pies - they are edible b ut i mostly buy for the pots and the make my own steak and kidney pies using them. Lots of other uses for them too, when I'm prepping veg or have things left over - they go in a pot and bag and into the fridge.

Oldraver · 21/07/2020 16:14

I used to use them for all my tea coffee etc. I actually put a few of the Orla Kiely ones in the recycle ♻️

Choccyp1g · 21/07/2020 16:15

DS loves the Charlie Bigham pies, and the pots are nice, but I have a problem with the unglazed ring on the bottom. Anyone else find it goes mouldy?
