AIBU to hoard Douwe Egberts jars?

Just in case I need them for something?

They're so nice.

They have been converted into vases, pen jars, food storage jars on my open shelves, a spatula jar, a washing pods jar, a bath salts display jar... I use one as a giant glass of water as well!

A fair few empty ones are currently cluttering up my cupboard and DP is on the warpath to throw them away.

What else can I use the jars for to save them from the recycling bin this Friday?!

That's how I pronounce it, and it's pronounced like that on the adverts @IveSeenThings.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 21/07/2020 18:32

i dont like them, i can never get the lids off

DartmoorDoughnut · 21/07/2020 18:32

YADNBU Grin

I use them for sloe gin and as containers for flour/sugar. Love them!

Motoko · 21/07/2020 18:32

Not the way OP pronounces it!

Warpdrive · 21/07/2020 18:32

Someone recently told me that the jars that are used as diffuser sets (you know, the Jo Malone rip off ones that aldi sell called No. 1 or No. 3) are very useful repurposed as individual bud-vases.

Bipbopbee · 21/07/2020 18:34

Yes! I do this too!

DartmoorDoughnut · 21/07/2020 18:35

That Pringle lids fit on Gu ramekins has genuinely made my day Wine

Trailing1 · 21/07/2020 18:36

MIL does this. All her friends give her their jars as well. She has quite the collection going.

TimeWastingButFun · 21/07/2020 18:37

They're nice jars, it's just a shame the coffee is so crap! My husband saves jam jars for his workshop, he has every conceivable size of screw and bolts in them. And I save jam jars for making damson jam when they're ready.

WildRosie · 21/07/2020 18:38

I used to buy Illy ground coffee, mainly for the fancy metal canisters. I still have several.

Seeingadistance · 21/07/2020 18:38

I have hundreds of them, including three different Orka Kiely ones!

I have a couple of the big ones, which I got in Tesco.

Seeingadistance · 21/07/2020 18:38

Orla!

birkenstocks4ever · 21/07/2020 18:40

If anyone uses Milk&More then the River Cottage yoghurts come in the BEST jars - there are 2 sizes and the big one is great for storage

Whatsissname · 21/07/2020 18:41

I only buy DE coffee when I need a new storage jar Grin

Tappering · 21/07/2020 18:43

I love Dowe Egberts jars. I used to buy the really big jars from Costco. I use them for kitchen storage and they look fab on my open shelving - rice, pasta, cous cous, flour, sugar, bulgar wheat and so on.

If you need to get the labels off then a squirt of WD40 works a treat.

user327253 · 21/07/2020 18:46

I thought it was Dow like How.

BikeRunSki · 21/07/2020 18:50

I do this! I have never bought a storage jar in my life!

Unfortunately, I’m allergic to coffee and DH prefers beans..., but I have Douwe Egberts and Kenco jars going back at least 25 years.

Also Bonne Maman jam jars, and other interesting glass jars jars. I have about 20 Gu dishes too, which I got off Freectcje at least a year ago.

I’m currently collecting pesto/herb size jars for a Cub activity (I’m a leader), if we’re ever able to meet again.

mrwalkensir · 21/07/2020 18:53

must admit that I always thought the small Nutella jars were meant to be used as glasses afterwards! Have been complimented on our little bowl shaped glasses that were originally Glade Christmas candles...

Noodledoodledoo · 21/07/2020 18:59

My mum's food storage was all these in the 80's and 90's. Fab idea.

verypeckish · 21/07/2020 19:00

I keep my caster sugar in an old coffee jar that I rescued from work when I was engaged. That would have been in 1982-3.

Carry on saving them, I think it's a great idea.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 21/07/2020 19:10

I've got about 30 empty illy coffee tins. Can't bring myself to get rid of them, can't find a use for them. Christmas presents? Jumbo wind chime? Basic communications system around the house? I just don't know - it's a real dilemma. Confused

CoalTitCafe · 21/07/2020 19:15

I have one Illy can, I fill it with bricks of Rossa coffee Grin

@isthismylifenow

I saw on my last shop there is a jumbo jar size of Douwe Egberts too. My first though was, oooh I could keep loads in that jar!

Grin

I’ve got a jumbo jar! Definitely saved fir a project. When dd went to uni I got some glass pens and wrote tea and sugar in them in different languages. She was gutted when she lost them on a move.
WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 21/07/2020 19:19

@CoalTitCafe that sounds interesting do you need 30 more?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 21/07/2020 19:24

And I hoard the aluminium Kenco tins at work. I was in with the key worker kids last week and we covered them in paper and pva glue then decorated them. I’m quite proud of mine, drizzled paint on wet glue, came out like 70s ceramics!
