AIBU to hoard Douwe Egberts jars?

Just in case I need them for something?

They're so nice.

They have been converted into vases, pen jars, food storage jars on my open shelves, a spatula jar, a washing pods jar, a bath salts display jar... I use one as a giant glass of water as well!

A fair few empty ones are currently cluttering up my cupboard and DP is on the warpath to throw them away.

What else can I use the jars for to save them from the recycling bin this Friday?!

I also have a big collection of GU pots, pringle tops fit on them perfectly

This is a game changer.

I told DH and he actually gasped!

Potpourri, buttons, threads, knickknacks, pins, stamps, cat treats, biscuits, paints, cosmetics, toothbrushes, hotel samples (mini soaps etc) for guests, small change etc.

Be a waste not to!

ChicCroissant · 21/07/2020 16:35

My teabags go into a pottery jar that held butter at one time, I think - can't remember now.

Love the idea of putting things in the lid as well!

I may have a couple of nutella drinking glasses ...

InkieNecro · 21/07/2020 16:43

I have glass jars for the kitchen, but also use the great dairy collective plastic yoghurt tubs to store playdough, stickers and arts and crafts stuff for the children. As they're only toddlers they can be a bit rough with things so there are ideal as they are air tight it doesn't matter if they get broken.

onemouseplace · 21/07/2020 16:47

I LOVE the jumbo Douwe Egberts jars - I don't even drink the stuff, but my Mum does and I make her give me all her old jars.

seadog1977 · 21/07/2020 16:54

I have 3 of the Orla jars too. Love them , in my new kitchen

Hippywannabe · 21/07/2020 17:03

I think I threw out my OK ones. Sob

missymousey · 21/07/2020 17:09

Get kids to turn them into scented candles and sell them for a fortune at the school Christmas fair if they ever have such a thing again

CoalTitCafe · 21/07/2020 17:19

Where do you get the giant ones from?! I've never seen them in the shop please don't say Costco, I don't drive

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 21/07/2020 17:43

yes, costco for the giant ones, I love to go and get them!

Everyone comes through with jars to ask "can I throw this in the recycling or not?" ...we have a two tier system and I am the only person who knows!

I recently bought lots of Aldi yogurts in jars so I could keep them and make my own :o And they have little lids too!

Ohffs66 · 21/07/2020 17:47

DM has several Orla Kiely ones that she uses to store stuff in, wonder if I can nick them next time I go there and flog them on eBay...

Those bloody Gu glass ramekins are the bane of my life, DH rescues them out of the recycling and sneakily stacks them up in the cupboard, one fell out and smashed all over the floor the other week and I threw the other 942 away in a rage. He still insisted on keeping 2 'in case they come in handy'. They never do!!!

Tlollj · 21/07/2020 17:51

How do you put stuff in the lid @isthismylifenow ? I didn’t realise the bing thing comes off?

Tlollj · 21/07/2020 17:51

Not the bing thing. The bung thing.

Bargainhuntbore · 21/07/2020 17:54

I have the OK jars on my window sills. I use them for flowers, especially daffodils in spring.

I also use Gü pots. I have them on my desk at work with paper clips in them, a sponge with water in one (stop me liking my fingers to turn papers), and as tea lights at home.

GCHWho · 21/07/2020 18:02

I once fibbed to ‘im indoors that the special glass jars that weren’t in the recycling, but “resting” on the side were for a neighbours chutney making session. Went out to the local shop for milk, on my return the bastard had already walked them round to her !

FreezerBird · 21/07/2020 18:14

Collecting jars. It's a Bing thing.

user327253 · 21/07/2020 18:14

Ooh, I'm switching to Douwe Egberts now! Didn't realise they had such a great plain lid, jars with logos on the lid I don't like to keep but keep them hanging around the kitchen for a while anyway just incase.

I use glass jars I've bought from IKEA and Kilner jars and old mayonnaise and gherkin jars for: colouring pencils on the table, to keep tea lights in, to keep popcorn kernels in, to keep fine ground salt in (for flavouring popcorn), to keep marbles in, have some spare in the kids craft cupboard, and the kids keep random collections in them in their rooms. If that gives you any ideas.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/07/2020 18:16

I buy Douwe Egberts for the jars, they are so useful Blush

riffleraffle · 21/07/2020 18:17

Do any of the jars fit a 1.5kg bag of flour? I definitely want to join the DE Gang!!

willitbetonight · 21/07/2020 18:19

I use the small Nutella jars as glasses. I'm very excited about the DE jars although we don't drink instant coffee.

Sally7645 · 21/07/2020 18:22

There's actually a bit of a trade to be had on eBay for these jars. I used them for wedding centrepieces and they looked great, if you have a few going spare stick them on eBay and they'll sell for a few quid, if you can be naffed

IveSeenThings · 21/07/2020 18:25

Ok, someone put me out of my misery and tell me how to pronounce "Douwe Egberts"
I just say Dow (like how) Egburts...

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 21/07/2020 18:26

I have more GU ramekin glasses than I would care to admit.
I need ideas for them that don't include ownership of a Chihuahua Grin

CoalTitCafe · 21/07/2020 18:27

IveSeenThings

I say Dewey (as in Malcolm in the middle) Eggberts, although I accept that I am categorically wrong there.

Ah, interesting.
Is it Dutch or something?
