Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 09/07/2020 20:42

Only just seen this thread.

Blunt force trauma... I'm dying. Grin

Total tonic to read this tonight.

quodvox · 09/07/2020 20:46

I had some type of shrimp in my water butt. I thought they were well cool! No idea how they got in there.

Loopylou23 · 09/07/2020 20:47

This is the reason I come in mumsnet! This thread is nuts. Can’t stop laughing

whereorwhere · 09/07/2020 20:55

They look quite sweet - I couldn't throw them but I think feeding them to fish or putting them in salt water is fine

Pet8 · 09/07/2020 21:02

I can’t believe that I got to today old without ever hearing of sea monkeys. mind blown

fleurdeliz · 09/07/2020 21:10

@quodvox

They were not shrimp. Most likely mosquito larvae.

Fun fact of the day - Do you know when the Greek Orthodox fast before Easter they are not allowed to consume animal products of any kind. There is even a special Flora as the normal margarine doesn't pass - must not be fully vegan - yet shrimp/prawns (and squid) are allowed. Make of that what you will!
Could she have some wafer thin prawns Barbara?
jessstan2 · 09/07/2020 21:37

I can't get over a grandparent giving them to a grandchild as a gift! The very idea is horrific. Laboratory created living creatures, dehydrated - like something out of a horror movie.

Will I sleep peacefully tonight now I know about these things.

IAmMeThisIsI · 09/07/2020 21:39

We were given stick insects in science once. I hated them and popped them outside on my mother's rose bush. They ate it all then died.

ShebaShimmyShake · 09/07/2020 21:41

I've read the thread and there are some funny posts (especially my one about snakes shopping at Tesco, obviously) but I really don't think it's Classics stuff. It's pretty morbid in places and at times quite nasty.

Whatkatyforgottodo · 09/07/2020 23:02

My daughter was given some nestly2 years ago by my mother and two of the original lot are still going strong and have just had a baby! 🥰 I swing between being a bit grossed out by then and finding them cute! The baby has upped the cute factor a bit!

Whatkatyforgottodo · 09/07/2020 23:02

Nearly!

Mitzimccormack · 09/07/2020 23:02

I can’t understand what all the fuss is about. So far as my family are concerned they are imaginary creatures. We never once saw anything in the tank. And I have 3 boys so that was a lot of bloody birthday party gifts!!!!

zwellers · 09/07/2020 23:12

Fish keeper here who is obviously cruel and heartless because baby brine shrimp make one of the best live foods for conditioning fish for spawning/ feeding fry. Some people seriously need to get a grip.. if I was given some they would be fish food literally.

zwellers · 09/07/2020 23:23

Also why are people so worked up about brine shrimp but it's fine for children to chase pigeons?

Triangle114 · 09/07/2020 23:28

I really can't be bothered reading all the posts. We had ours ten weeks in tap water that turned stagnant, there was about 5 left so I flushed them.

How is that a fun fact? It’s the religious following of millions of people. How awful to ridicule it.
Ohtherewearethen · 10/07/2020 01:41

How are they ridiculing it?

squeekums · 10/07/2020 03:58

Why the fuck would you feed a fucking pet to other fish?

I've known people who breed mice to feed their snakes. The mice while alive are treated as pets and well cared for.

We got snails in our fish tanks, the bigger goldfish eat some, they clean tank and breed so fast them being eaten is a good thing
The fish would love chasing brine shrimp, it would be natural behavior.

Animals eat animals, that's how it works

justilou1 · 10/07/2020 04:09

Are Sea Monkeys the bitey little buggers that attack you when you swim in the sea? My kids wanted to get some Sea Monkeys and I refused, knowing that like the dog, I’d be the one looking after them. (Or chucking out their stinking, decomposing corpses...)

Celestine70 · 10/07/2020 04:25

My son keeps ants as pets. I thought sea monkeys were prehistoric dinosaur type creatures that were some of the first sea life on earth. Wish OP would tell us what she is doing with the sea monkeys.
