Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

I hope this thread doesn't make Classics. First of all, it's not nearly funny, eccentric, light hearted or generally good natured enough. Secondly, although most of the jokes have been at the expense of those who are against destroying the shrimp, it's clear that a lot of people do feel strongly about it, rightly or wrongly, and I don't think it would present Mumsnet in the kind of light that we want.

Agreed. Would also make a pretty boring thread to re-read given its mainly made up of a certain few posters trying desperately to be funny.

Pelleas · 10/07/2020 11:21

Also why are people so worked up about brine shrimp but it's fine for children to chase pigeons?

Who said it's fine for children to chase pigeons? I hate seeing children harassing animals for entertainment.

ShebaShimmyShake · 10/07/2020 12:19

Any vegans who appeared on this thread would only be berated for consuming almond milk and being "militant".

PablosHoney · 10/07/2020 12:45

Would we 😌

lockeddownandcrazy · 10/07/2020 14:03

Cannot even believe some of the cruelty on here! You do not throw away any living thing!

EggysMom · 10/07/2020 14:18

Can you leave them as a housewarming present for the new people?

Tomorrow on Mumsnet: When I moved into my new house, the previous owner had left a jar of what look like tiny shrimp. AIBU to simply throw them away?

sparklewater · 10/07/2020 15:10

I have no shame in telling other people's children not to chase pigeons as well, it's a horrible thing to do.

I would probably set the sea monkeys free in the river or something.

BerriesAndLeaves · 10/07/2020 15:16

They need a saltwater habitat

Pelleas · 10/07/2020 16:09

It would certainly be one for those 'what's the most bizarre thing the previous owners have left in your new house' threads.

PablosHoney · 10/07/2020 16:09

I googled something to do with sea monkeys and it brought up a similar mumsnet thread from 2010

Twinkled · 10/07/2020 22:39

I agree Frosted Violets . If you take any kind of creature respect it's life and research where you can take it to live out its life not just guess and throw it in a pond! Vile. Take responsibility stop being lazy and cruel.

Babyiwantabump · 11/07/2020 05:10

We did a project at school with some and had to put them in a 2 litre bottle of water . I accidentally left it on my window sill and they boiled to death .

I’ve never been good with pets

Isthisfinallyit · 11/07/2020 05:17

Those having an attack of the vapours over the thought of killing a few shrimp... Well... I hope they're vegan!

Although I haven't commented on this thread before I find this post ridiculous. There is a huge moral gap between killing an animal for food or killing an animal out of lack of entertainment.

LynetteScavo · 11/07/2020 08:34

There's a huge moral gap between killing animals for food when you need to eat it to survive and when you could quite easily live healthily without eating meat. I think killing sea monkeys because you can no longer care for them is more like killing any animal because you can't care for them.

Let's not talk about eggs incubated and hatched in schools all over the country
@DullDullWeather

So are headlice.

Very similar actually, in constitution and capability.

I trust that any headlice in your family are carefully nurtured into a raging infestation?
This is my favourite answer!

DobbyLovesSocks · 11/07/2020 11:18

@ZombieLizzieBennet Could she have some wafer thin prawns Barbara? I totally read that in Nana's voice Grin

I had sea monkeys years ago - cannot remember for the life of me (or them) what happened to them. I think I overfed them as I recall thinking the feeding spoon was TINY and they couldn't possibly survive on that

PablosHoney · 11/07/2020 16:10

Is a sea monkey an animal it’s actually closer to a a bacterium in its make up 🤔 killing animals to eat is crueler and unnecessary too. It’s not a nonsense comment to say you can’t be outraged in the flushing if you eat meat, you can’t really and you also can’t 100% call yourself an animal lover if you eat them, what makes your dog or cat more important than a cow or sheep.

BerriesAndLeaves · 11/07/2020 16:41

Might be nice with a Marie Rose sauce

PablosHoney · 11/07/2020 16:42

I think they’d taste disgusting 😂

therealkittyfane · 11/07/2020 21:01

Just watched a you tube video show them growing over 10 days. They’re like flies but in water.
Can’t believe people are talking about family pets’... Grin

therealkittyfane · 11/07/2020 21:05

They also look a bit sperm like fluttering around when they first ‘develop’ on day 1/2. Millions of which are flushed down toilets daily.

TrishTeres · 12/07/2020 13:30

@sparklewater. I would be concerned if someone reprimanded my child harmlessly chasing pigeons. The pigeons come right back for more and it looks mutually enjoyable and fun for all parties. It is a real spectacle of nature watching them fly. Maybe you could approach the parent/carer first?. In my case I would politely decline to agree with you.

TrishTeres · 12/07/2020 13:35

I hope everyone on here speaking for the right to life of a monkey fish is also pro-actively speaking out against abortion of tiny humans in the womb. We cannot be "pro-choice" when it comes to ensuring positive outcomes for both mums and babies. Both lives matter. All lives matter.

I can’t speak for any one else but I personally am a pro lifer, a massive de rail though and I’m not going to comment any further than that on the subject.

P.S I also wouldn’t allow children to chase pigeons, or cats, or any other animal.
