Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

We've still got a jar somewhere around that was allowed to dry up. I'm pretty sure we'd get them back if we topped it up now - there's enough salts still in it. We definitely dried it out and started them up again once before. They are very curious creatures!!

Hadn't thought of their possibilities as fish food though, we have a lot of small goldfish in our pond (hatched last year) and we could consider growing up more to feed them with ...

This thread is so funny.

TeachAdopt · 08/07/2020 18:27

Yes it's cruel to kill your child's pet. It shows a complete disregard for something your child has attached to and that is a living thing. If you didn't want sea monkeys then you shouldn't have bought them in the first place.

TeachAdopt · 08/07/2020 18:28

Just seen they were a gift, but even so, children deal with death in different ways. These are living creatures and your child is attached to them. It might seem silly to you but it's not to them.

@frostedviolets

God what an awful thread this is.

Take out ‘sea monkey’ and replace with ‘puppy’ or ‘kitten’ or ‘bunny’ and the tone would be very different.

They are living, breathing creatures...
Of course you don’t ‘throw them away’, how fucking vile.
You bought them, you look after them or you sell/give them away to someone who will

What do you do with nits then? Carefully pick them out and rehome them 😂
Bobismyfriend · 08/07/2020 18:31

This has made me laugh!

When my daughter was 6, she had sea monkeys. I got fed up of them because they looked so scummy.

One day I threw them out of the window and said it was accidental.

My daughter never forgot and last week she bought herself some to go in her flat. She's 27. And no, she isn't scarred. We laugh about it. She sent me a video of them when the first 2 hatched. We've named them Veronica and Patricia. She said I'm not allowed near them.....

BigBadVoodooHat · 08/07/2020 18:31

You bought them, you look after them

frostedviolets has solved the issue for you, OP:

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas ~ there you go, hand them back for her to lovingly care for Grin

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 08/07/2020 18:31

oh we had them, i never knew whether they were dead or alive,
and yes, you tread on ants, kill ants, and flies.
what is the difference?

Cuddling57 · 08/07/2020 18:32

Are you on Facebook?
Put them on marketplace for free and I'm sure someone will want them

pinkglove75318 · 08/07/2020 18:32

I think you should keep them and call the Guineas book of records. (If that still a thing).
I've never managed to keep ours alive for more than a few weeks!!

@frostedviolets

Be a little more thoughtful about your life OP.

Batqueen · 08/07/2020 18:34

I had some for ages as a child, they have babies so they don’t just die they off. You get the packets with them to prepare the water correctly. They died eventually when my mum accidentally knocked the tank over but that was after about a year.

MyBingaling · 08/07/2020 18:34

Fry them up in a bit of garlic butter for dinner? Wink

Dylaninthemovies1 · 08/07/2020 18:36

Why the fuck would you feed a fucking pet to other fish?

Batqueen · 08/07/2020 18:36

After reading this thread though I’m wondering if I should ask my mum some questions. . .Confused

MorganKitten · 08/07/2020 18:36

@slipperywhensparticus

They will die soon anyway
I know someone who had them 5 years
MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 08/07/2020 18:37

This is the quality hysteria I come to mumsnet for.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2020 18:38

A friend of mine saw mine, said 'oooo, a snow globe' and before I could stop her gave the tank a good shake. That was an oops.

It's a refreshing change from the covid rule breaking threads of late 😆

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 18:39

Ours never came to life in the first place, the only people that can describe this as vile will be vegans, if you eat meat you’d better shush.

Lockheart · 08/07/2020 18:40

@Dylaninthemovies1 because that's how food chains work.

Fish eat brine shrimp, geckos eat crickets, snakes eat mice and rats (and yes, some people do keep mice to feed to their reptiles).

It's no crueler than flushing them down the toilet / not feeding them.

I'm trying to remember what happened to my sea monkeys - I had them for ages but I think they just died out at some point.

JaneJeffer · 08/07/2020 18:41

Can you leave them as a housewarming present for the new people? Grin

LadyCatStark · 08/07/2020 18:41

I’m surprised they’re not dead too. We’ve had 2 lots bought as presents and they just hatched and then disappeared!

BrokenBrit · 08/07/2020 18:45

Give them away to someone who will look after them.
