Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

I have some still in powdered form in the box from Christmas. Now knee deep in an ethical / moral / humanitarian dilemma which will no doubt visit me tonight in the form of sea monkey nightmares. I must start a new thread to canvas opinion: Do I have an obligation to hydrate my powdered sea monkey eggs?

Oh my goodness the moral obligation you are under must weigh heavy, have counselling before you make any rash decisions. Get the help you need to make a choice.

PablosHoney · 10/07/2020 07:42

I’m willing to bet the OP flushed them already and we’re debating over a moot point 😂😂

therealkittyfane · 10/07/2020 07:55

I know someone who had them 5 years

You haven't given them a chance Shock

😂😂😂

Fun fact of the day - Do you know when the Greek Orthodox fast before Easter they are not allowed to consume animal products of any kind. There is even a special Flora as the normal margarine doesn't pass - must not be fully vegan - yet shrimp/prawns (and squid) are allowed. Make of that what you will! 
How is that a fun fact? It’s the religious following of millions of people. How awful to ridicule it.

What - where on earth am I ridiculing it? I thought the fact that shrimp are permitted in an otherwise vegan diet was an interesting fact given the topic! My family are Greek Orthodox!

@justilou1

Are Sea Monkeys the bitey little buggers that attack you when you swim in the sea? My kids wanted to get some Sea Monkeys and I refused, knowing that like the dog, I’d be the one looking after them. (Or chucking out their stinking, decomposing corpses...)
IF this were true, it would be no more than fair retaliation by the sea monkey community for the callous injustices carried out against them, as evidenced by this thread.
PablosHoney · 10/07/2020 08:41

I was puzzled over that too @midnightstar66 I thought you were just pointing out the juxtaposition.

midnightstar66 · 10/07/2020 08:58

Indeed @PablosHoney but the response does fit in nicely with the total and absolute batshittery and hysteria that is this thread! 😆

Meatshake · 10/07/2020 08:58

All the shit going on in the world, America imploding, thousands of kids dying in Yemen, 80 million refugees stuck in camps....

But no, let's shit ourselves about a cup of fucking shrimp.

Get a grip!!

Coronabegone · 10/07/2020 09:05

Bloody good post @Meatshake

Iggi999 · 10/07/2020 09:14

Got a pet Meatshake? Happy for one of us to come round to yours and give it a good kicking? I mean you wouldn't mind, what with America imploding and thousands of humans dying daily.
Caring about any number of things simultaneously is possible for most humans you know.

Meatshake · 10/07/2020 09:22

Yes I do. I'm also vegetarian. Any other questions?

Meatshake · 10/07/2020 09:24

Got a sense of perspective, Iggi?

Iggi999 · 10/07/2020 09:27

It is a nonsense to ever say "don't ever be bothered about thing x because thing y is also happening and is more significant".
Literally none of mumsnet could happen if that were the case.

Meatshake · 10/07/2020 09:33

Yes you're probably right. I'm just jealous that you have the luxury of being so fundamentally bothered by something so insignificant when there are much vaster cruelties and injustices in the world. It's quite spectacular, actually.

Anyway, I'm bowing out now. I'm making toy parcels for kids in the Jungle and need to get them finished today (practice what you preach and all that)

I'll just head over and put this on the most OTT response you've ever seen on Mumsnet thread! It will rank between 1-10 I reckon!

ShebaShimmyShake · 10/07/2020 09:43

If you're going to do the "but more important things in the world" whataboutery, you should do it on more or less every single thread on the site.

MummyMayo1988 · 10/07/2020 09:45

We've had sae monkeys since Christmas too. They keep breeding!
I must admit; they creep me out a little too. But I definitely wouldn't have the heart to flush them away. My DS6 loves them and feeds them every couple of days. Weve got a nice build up of algea that oxygenates the water and feeds them.
The black dot on her belly is where the eggs are.

Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?
Iggi999 · 10/07/2020 09:46

Corona you do realise I am mirroring the language of the previous poster? It wasn't me who thought that we should have no concern for any minor thoughtlessness as there are worse things happening in the world. If my dc says his brother hit him I don't say, well at least you weren't decapitated like that child on the news (etc).
Confused

Coronabegone · 10/07/2020 09:54

@Iggi999 you do realise you're being ridiculous?

Iggi999 · 10/07/2020 09:58

Can you clarify? Or is this just a knee jerk response that you won't explain?

JRUIN · 10/07/2020 10:46

My DS6 loves them and feeds them every couple of days.

Good for you for raising a child who looks after her pets Smile

ShebaShimmyShake · 10/07/2020 10:52

I hope this thread doesn't make Classics. First of all, it's not nearly funny, eccentric, light hearted or generally good natured enough. Secondly, although most of the jokes have been at the expense of those who are against destroying the shrimp, it's clear that a lot of people do feel strongly about it, rightly or wrongly, and I don't think it would present Mumsnet in the kind of light that we want.

The decision isn't mine, of course, and I'm probably outnumbered, but I just want to put that out there.

zingally · 10/07/2020 11:02

Of course you can dispose of them OP. They're just shrimp!

Those having an attack of the vapours over the thought of killing a few shrimp... Well... I hope they're vegan!

If it's easier for you OP. Pop them in the freezer. This will put them in a catatonic state, and then just go and throw the frozen block in your local stream/river/reservoir. They'll quickly be polished off by other things, and they won't suffer.
