After being blessed with learning about Paverotti's singing with Skunk Anansie on another thread, along with other great tracks.... can I ask for recommendations of artists or groups you love and can't understand why they aren't much better loved... trying to widen my music loves without listening to the radio.
I'll start with Natty - reggae- albums "Man Like I" and "Release The Fear"
Teddy Thompson- folk/pop/country/bit Everly brothers- albums "Separate Ways" , "Piece Of What You Need" and several others.

Absolutely David Ford - brilliant. Really keen to see him live, esp if it was Milk and Cookies. Some incredible songs, especially Song for the Road.

Casschops · 05/07/2020 17:19

@BoxAndKnife......We have probably met. I've spent a significant amount of the summer in Fife and the Hebrides watching Fence stuff then more recently Lost Map. Ive seen Malcom Middleton many times do you like RM Hubbert and Arab Strap too?

KevinsCarter · 05/07/2020 17:34

The Yo-Yo's (One of Danny Wildheart's other bands.) Great little band. And he is still gorgeous.

@SimonJT

I have a friend who also knows Olly, MNEK and Leo Kalyan.

BoxAndKnife · 05/07/2020 17:51

@Casschops - I do! I knew DH was a keeper when he bought me Aidan Moffatt's I Can Hear Your Heart early on in our courting Grin

I have been on a Fence pilgrimage to Anstruther and Crail, but only the once as it's a bit of a way from south London!

aaalll · 05/07/2020 17:59

Hope & Social. A fantastic band whom I can't even describe adequately.

Casschops · 05/07/2020 18:01

@BoxAndKnife did you Haarfest and Home Game. So many happy memories in Anster my husband asked me to marry him in the Dreel. We are talking about taking our son back. Very special group of people.

SummerWhisper · 05/07/2020 18:04

The Bird and the Bee

Also echo First Aid Kit

Also John Foxx - electropop pioneer - listen to The Garden

The question wasn’t that they were well known, it was about bands/artists who should be bigger than they are. I would hazard a guess that most of the ones you listed there wouldn’t be household names, perhaps with the exception of Brandon Flowers.

Not everyone can be in the top forty, and some of those have had multiple songs that were very high in the charts, at least one has had a no 1 single.. What does it take to be a household name?

Meggie2008 · 05/07/2020 18:13

Black Stone Cherry. I've seen them 8 times and they just get better and better. Seem to have a pretty hardcore fan base here but no where near enough people have heard about them.

The Cadillac Three who are everything in life and seemingly no one knows them. Fully recommend you all check them out.

Both bands I'd say are southern rock. TC3 have a country vibe too.

BoxAndKnife · 05/07/2020 18:15

We had tickets for Homegame one year but in the end couldn't go!. Can't remember why now but we must've had a good reason because it would have been fabulous. The East Neuk is a lovely place altogether and Fence live shows were always a blast.

I've got a terrible picture of me and KC at Green Man somewhere...must dig it out and have a reminisce!

We’ve probably met/possibly know each other, weird!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 05/07/2020 18:34

Baffled at Brandon Flowers being mentioned though Grin, er isn't he like a literal superstar?

And pretty dire in my opinion.

veryvery · 05/07/2020 18:34

Sibylle Baier

Beautiful!

mencken · 05/07/2020 18:43

Big Big Train!

whippetwoman · 05/07/2020 18:53

Of Monsters and Men are amazing.
Went to see them just before lockdown and they were wonderful live. It wasn’t even sold out. Everybody needs some In their lives and they are totally cool and Icelandic to boot.

Listen to Dirty Paws and Little Talks immediately.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 05/07/2020 18:59

@TheUnquestionedAnswer

HMLTD SQUID
Squid are bloody brilliant.

Flatworms.
Henge.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
Idles.
Beans on Toast.

BrogerMaylor · 05/07/2020 19:15

Yes to Black Stone Cherry! I saw them at Rambling Man Fair last year and they blew me away!

Also agree with Dreadzone and Alabama 3. Both excellent live gigs.

PermanentTemporary · 05/07/2020 19:28

Really liking Poets of the Fall. Wishing someone on this thread (not me) would do a playlist... I haven't recovered from the Mumsnet Favourites playlist or whatever it was, hated nearly all of it.

whichteaareyou · 05/07/2020 19:41

Dusky Grey are amazing and deff don't get the recognition they deserve

Scout2016 · 05/07/2020 19:44

@PermanentTemporary I keep ending up in a vortex trying to work through it all - definitely thankful when posts have a recommended starting point song but know that doesn't work for most artists.

Love to see a few good ones here.

I always thought Darren Hayes solo stuff was really underrated. He's quite a talent.

Also Raleigh Richie (or Greyworm for GOTers).

Odesza have some really great songs.

For a more metal vibe, I always enjoy Christina Scabbias voice in Lacuna Coil (although admit I sometimes think her male counterpart is woefully inadequate next to her). She's also stunning.

Used to really enjoy Bloc Party back in the day, most of a certain age would recognise one or two of their songs, but think that they probably deserved more success than they got.

SG Lewis does an amazing song called Warm which is really lovely.

I'm sure there's more, but that's the strange mix that immediately came to mind. A very mixed bunch lol.
