After being blessed with learning about Paverotti's singing with Skunk Anansie on another thread, along with other great tracks.... can I ask for recommendations of artists or groups you love and can't understand why they aren't much better loved... trying to widen my music loves without listening to the radio.
I'll start with Natty - reggae- albums "Man Like I" and "Release The Fear"
Teddy Thompson- folk/pop/country/bit Everly brothers- albums "Separate Ways" , "Piece Of What You Need" and several others.

Rammstein.

They're pretty well known but should be huge........sadly they tend to play smaller, UK venues which sell out in seconds so my one chance to see them in years was snatched away by Corona :(

Scout2016 · 05/07/2020 00:57

@FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue there's a band Mr Wilson's Second Liners plays gigs round here doing New Orleans brass band versions of 90s stuff like Prodigy. Probably a love or hate it type act, you have to be in the mood but they are skilled. And fun.

Also Flobots.......not my usual choice of music but ridiculously catchy.

Scout2016 · 05/07/2020 01:02

@SpongebobNoPants yes to Gaslight Anthem. I was late to their Glastonbury set and apparently missed Bruce Springsteen appearing with them. Really hope that was just a rumour....

@FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue I can second PMJB. Seen them play a couple of times - this is my fave of theirs. Morgan’s voice 😱:

Starksforthewin · 05/07/2020 01:09

What a great idea for a thread, OP!

I will agree with First Aid Kit mentioned above. Beautiful melodies and great singers.

Also Ron Sexsmith Canadian singer songwriter who has been ‘on the verge ‘ of huge success many times. His songwriting is peerless.
He’s not marketing friendly though, likes doing his own thing. I have all his albums and seen him live many times. Great personality.

chrislilleyswig · 05/07/2020 01:12

Great to see so much love for Kodaline. First dance at my wedding. The One

It astounds me that Frank Turner isn't a superstar. I love him and the Sleeping Souls.

SunshineThelma · 05/07/2020 01:12

Slow Club
Los Campesinos
This Is The Kit
Tracyanne and Danny
Dutch Uncles
The Mountain Goats

I'm a bit surprised with the suggestion of The Decemberists upthread - surely they're not a small band!

FortunesFave · 05/07/2020 01:24

Lankum...a stunning Irish band...they're from Dublin. Radie Peat is the lead singer and her voice is unearthly.

This is a song they wrote about the Curragh Wrens who were women living out on the moorland during the 1800s and were shunned by the people in the village. Rather than choose the workhouse they lived in literal burrows on the hillsides....they were prostitutes, sleeping with English soldiers for very little pay. They had a whole society among themselves and only one shop would serve them. The other people of the village threw stones at them.

Also check out their version of Liam Weldon's "Dark Horse:

@Scout2016 - it’s true, he did. I wasn’t there, but I watched their set on telly.

Love Gaslight Anthem.

LunaNorth · 05/07/2020 03:01

White Denim. Saw them live and they were blistering.

YY to Ladyhawke.

Cherry Ghost.

Band of Horses.

MNEK, he is an amazing song writer

Years and Years

NewYorkIvy · 05/07/2020 07:42

Ah yes, Gaslight Anthem are superb. Seen them live a couple of times and they were incredible

Scout2016 · 05/07/2020 08:38

M.I.A but I can see why people wouldn't take to her or her music.

@FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue yes I discovered Postmodern Jukebox recently on you tube, they're pretty cool! When things are back up and touring again I'd definitely go to see them live. My favourite from what I've seen online is their jazzy version of Stacey's Mom.

@Adastarkadder. BlythePower are how DH and I met

LellyMcKelly · 05/07/2020 09:16

Seafret. They supported Kodaline a few years ago and blew them out of the water.

Blackandwhitehorse · 05/07/2020 09:43

Yes to First Aid Kit, Regina Spektor and if you like those to you’ll also love Emiliana Torrini. Plus San Fermin are so good, we saw them live in a little venue in London.

Scout2016 · 05/07/2020 09:53

Joe Jackson should have more recognition.

Ooh if they're better than Kodaline I need to check them out
bwfcchick88 · 05/07/2020 10:36

Jojo!

thatgingergirl · 05/07/2020 10:39

I agree with LunaNorth about Cherry Ghost - great band. I also love China Crisis, who were pretty big in the 80s, but I still feel they never really got the recognition they deserved.

Thatnameistaken · 05/07/2020 10:42

Russian Flying Squirrel, they came second in Rhod Gilbert's 'Britain's best part-time band' (should have won) they crowdfunded an album on the back of that, but as they're just ordinary dads with full-time jobs and kids the album to 3 years to make, hence by the time it came out in January everyone had forgotten about them.
Fantastic dreamy, proggy sort of sound. Do check them out...

Space were amazing. Got a fair bit of recognition, but never quite 'took off' in the way they deserved.

Such weird but wonderful lyrics. Still listen to the album Tin Planet, a fair bit.

Babyshmaby · 05/07/2020 10:57

Loving all the new music!

My suggestion is The Jellyman's Daughter. Scottish duo doing bluegrass/Americana style stuff on guitar and cello! The cello is amazing and so unusual Star
