After being blessed with learning about Paverotti's singing with Skunk Anansie on another thread, along with other great tracks.... can I ask for recommendations of artists or groups you love and can't understand why they aren't much better loved... trying to widen my music loves without listening to the radio.
I'll start with Natty - reggae- albums "Man Like I" and "Release The Fear"
Teddy Thompson- folk/pop/country/bit Everly brothers- albums "Separate Ways" , "Piece Of What You Need" and several others.

Halestorm- fairly big in the rock scene but no one outside of that seems to have heard of them. Lzzy Hale is phenomenal

This guy. So simple and so lovely...

Callum Beattie - saw him as a support act and he was captivating. Probably the best support act I've seen. He's just released his first album, sorry checking out of you like the whole singer - songwriter thing.

The Vegan Leather. They were recommended by a friend and I haven't seen them live, but I think they would be really good.

I'm surprised at some of the answers. Walk the moon, lucky chops, fun, postmodern jukebox, kodaline, Brandon flowers, idlewild - are these not all very well known?

SmallChickBilly · 05/07/2020 11:50

Sarah Shook and the Disarmers - practically unknown here as far as I can see, but love her vibe:

Smith and Brewer - catchy and clever, hopefully they're on the way up though as they supported Fairport Convention just before lockdown (hopefully they will play Cropredy whenever it can be held again!)

AdaStarkadder · 05/07/2020 14:40

scout2016 Love them both! The Poppies were brilliant live ...
slug That's lovely! l nearly doomed my budding romance with DP by dragging him along every time they played in London Grin

Love First Aid Kit, beautiful voices and lyrics. They’re song was on the Lloyds bank advert last year. I would also like to add
Phoebe Bridgers- brilliant songs, amazing voice and mesmerising live

ZeldaSmelda · 05/07/2020 14:54

The question wasn’t that they were well known, it was about bands/artists who should be bigger than they are. I would hazard a guess that most of the ones you listed there wouldn’t be household names, perhaps with the exception of Brandon Flowers.
Mustbetimeforachange · 05/07/2020 16:17

Frank Turner - big but no-one ever seems to have heard of him. I love his songs. Don't love the fact that he's now trying to launch his wife's career!

@SimonJT

MNEK, he is an amazing song writer

Years and Years

Patrick Wolf

Simon JT I love Years and Years. Olly Alexander is a real talent as a pianist lyricist and performer plus being an actor.
SimonJT · 05/07/2020 16:33

@notawittyname1954 It won’t let me quote you.

He is very talented in many different ways, hes in Russel T Davies ‘Boys’ this autumn, bits I have been shown look very good.

Can't wait to see it.

SimonJT · 05/07/2020 16:36

@notawittyname1954 Bit naughty in parts!

Smile Wink Am sure it will be great. I love Olly and the stills I've seen on the internet look good. I was following him on insta when he did his ig stories on the set. The rest of the cast looks great too and a very important subject. I hope it picks up some awards

SimonJT · 05/07/2020 16:42

@notawittyname1954 Davies stuff often does, hes a great writer. Some of the boat filming was 🤢

BillywigSting · 05/07/2020 16:43

Seconding pomplemousse, badfinger, Frank Turner and rufus wainwright.

Would like to also add:

Pomme, Alabama 3, debussy (classical) and key West.

My musical taste is quite obviously all over the place.

Sounds like you've seen quite a lot of it. Can't wait for it to come out on tv. Will be glued. I have played Communion and Palo Santo to death.

SimonJT · 05/07/2020 16:49

@notawittyname1954 I know him very well, so while I am biased, I do think they should be more popular than they are.

Have you seen the video for ‘i wish i knew?’ The real Olly and before he had his cute little ear done.

BoxAndKnife · 05/07/2020 16:51

Aww, love The Pictish Trail! I have lots of little handwritten notes from him as I used to order his stuff direct from him, plus DH got him to sign an album for me. Lovely chap Smile On that note, obviously King Creosote should obviously be fucking huge as well (although I'm sort of glad he isn't).

Also agree re: The Mountain Goats. Love love love.

My nomination is Andrew Bird. Sublime musician with the most beautiful voice and violin-playing skills. Just insane, insane talent.

Baffled at Brandon Flowers being mentioned though Grin, er isn't he like a literal superstar?

BoxAndKnife · 05/07/2020 16:52

Oh, and Malcolm Middleton of course, hence my username!

Rinoachicken · 05/07/2020 16:53

The Go Go Cult

Fudgefeet · 05/07/2020 16:54

Creepy neighbour are brilliant also j-live for anyone who likes hip hop.
Going back to an earlier post, we had to host skinnyman up at an event we put on years ago. A complete pain in the arse. As talented as he is I can see why his success was limited.

Yes I have watched that, and Traps and have been trying to catch up on all his films. Years deserve to be massive in my opinion. Lucky you to know him personally. Very nice to talk to you.
