After being blessed with learning about Paverotti's singing with Skunk Anansie on another thread, along with other great tracks.... can I ask for recommendations of artists or groups you love and can't understand why they aren't much better loved... trying to widen my music loves without listening to the radio.
I'll start with Natty - reggae- albums "Man Like I" and "Release The Fear"
Teddy Thompson- folk/pop/country/bit Everly brothers- albums "Separate Ways" , "Piece Of What You Need" and several others.

Walking On Cars. Really beautiful and amazing live.

CatRamsey · 05/07/2020 20:10

I came to say Kodaline but see many have already beat me to it!

CatRamsey · 05/07/2020 20:11

I came to say Kodaline but see I've been beaten to it! So excited to see to many fans - what do you think of their new album? I LOVE it!

Great thread idea OP, at a time when the music industry is so reliant on our support.

Fully agree with @callmeadoctor in saying Alistair Griffin. Beautifully emotive songs, and a sublime voice.

He's been doing regular Facebook live events through lockdown, and has a genuine consideration for those watching - regularly checking in on those who have commented that they're struggling or alone.

An all-round decent guy who deserves much more recognition of his talent. Well worth a listen Smile

Sorry, there were paragraphs before I posted! Phone formatting Confused

Gomez. Seen them live a dozen times, extraordinarily talented. People look at me blankly when I say their name. It’s an outrage.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 05/07/2020 20:19

Love, love, love some already mentioned, especially Years and Years and St Paul and the Broken Bones. I've seen them live a few times and Paul Janeway's voice is incredible, even better live. He's mesmerising and one of those vocalists that hit you in the solar plexus.

These bands are fairly well known/popular but I'm always amazed that they haven't gone stratospheric;

Catfish and the Bottlemen
Foals
Nothing but Thieves

Vocalists I love who should be huge are Yebba and Jazmine Sullivan. Massively underrated.

DadOnIce · 05/07/2020 20:20

The Yearning. They are on a tiny label (Elefant) so don't get much exposure, but they have done some great 60s-style songs with their very young vocalist, Maddie, for a few years. Now she has left to go her own way and with their new singer, Luci, they are pursuing a more 70s/disco flavour. And it's great!

Hatari. Icelandic punk techno 'multimedia performance group'

Butterchunks · 05/07/2020 20:26

Glad to see Hope and Social mentioned, amazing band - talking heads meets elbow. Seen them many times live and they are just joyful.

Also nominating Carina Round, british singer song writer, if you like Kate Bush and Regina Spector you'll probably enjoy Carina Round.

Ooh, that's reminded me of Kaleo who are also Icelandic. The lead singer is brilliant.

Frank Turner
Gerry Cinnamon
Showhawk Duo
Circa Waves

Apart from spending time with loved ones, live music is what I've missed the most I think.

MrsSpenserGregson · 05/07/2020 20:43

Dream Wife - girl band (British / Icelandic I think) who weren't a band originally but got together to perform an assignment at university. They are awesome ... I saw them live when they supported my next recommendation ...

The Vaccines ... just brilliant

Christine & The Queens

I also love Teleman (they may be bigger than I think - I'm not very "with it" so I have no idea if they're popular or not! I've never heard them played on the radio)

notawittyname1954 · 05/07/2020 20:43

@SimonJT

Thank you. I have watched it several times. Heartbreaking.

notawittyname1954 · 05/07/2020 20:46

@SimonJT

I actually think that documentary should be shown in every secondary school.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 05/07/2020 20:49

I am a massive fan of The Script and the fans are definitely a family #scriptfamily.

I always have someone to go to gigs with but I absolutely know I could go alone and meet up with many members of #scriptfamily.

They are AMAZING live.

Only other band I have seen who can hold a candle to them is The Killers - absolutely amazing live

rockingthelook · 05/07/2020 20:50

Cherry Ghost- so good
Bat for Lashes, Natasha Khan is sublime
Gary Clark ( lead singer from Danny Wilson)
Thomas Lang

Userwhatevernumber · 05/07/2020 20:55

Alex Francis

He is the older brother of James Bay, also a musician and singer songwriter. He is extremely talented, but I think his brother just got the bigger and better break. In my opinion, his music, and his vocal talent is actually better than his brothers. Alex’s music is far more versatile and his songs are all quite different, whereas James just keeps churning out the same stuff for a teenager audience.

Shazza7340 · 05/07/2020 21:05

Most probably do 😊

Shazza7340 · 05/07/2020 21:09

@StillCoughingandLaughing

Baffled at Brandon Flowers being mentioned though Grin, er isn't he like a literal superstar?

And pretty dire in my opinion.

@simontj we most probably do 😊
Scout2016 · 05/07/2020 21:10

@carsforlife my favourite little known female vocalists / rap artists from metal bands are Tairrie B with Manhole / My Ruin / Tura Satana (kept changing name for some reason.) Manhole's All Is Not Well is a 90s feminist album that is sadly still relevant today and I think My Ruin's 90s albums hold up well.
And Aimee Echo of Human Waste Project (could have done with a name change!) Their standout and possibly only album is e-lux.
