DH holds his knife like a pen

It drives me nuts.

It's pathetic that it irritates me the way it does. I don't nag him. I don't even bring it up (once ten years ago I did point out it wasn't the correct way, he asked what it was to me, I said it drives me crazy but that that's my issue)

It drives me silently crazy every day.

I'm ridiculous, why can't I just let it go?

Can somebody give me an example here? I'm struggling to picture that in my head Grin

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 21/06/2020 14:06

I had a boyfriend who held his knife AND his fork like a pen. It is not why we split up (it was 20 years ago and we were kids) but I did really struggle not to say something

SauvignonBlanche · 21/06/2020 14:06

Why haven’t you LTB? Confused

Msmcc1212 · 21/06/2020 14:08

Would drive me nuts too! My DH has terrible table manners and DC is picking up on them. I’d be accused of being fussy or critical if I said anything though!

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 21/06/2020 14:08

I can't envisage it. Diagram needed Grin

missmouse101 · 21/06/2020 14:09

A knife is a tool and there is a correct way to hold a tool so it can be used as efficiently as possible. It would also irritate me greatly OP!

user8558 · 21/06/2020 14:11

Just that, he holds his knife like a pen when he's using his cutlery.

We've been together 20 years.

But the irritation is becoming overwhelming and I think it might become a deal breaker.

What on earth am I going to do.

What don't people understand? Holding it like a pen, handle on top of the skin next to the thumb (wrong) vs holding the handle in the palm, index finger resting on top (right.) Confused

gamerchick · 21/06/2020 14:12

What on earth am I going to do

Don't eat with him then you can't see it.

Brefugee · 21/06/2020 14:15

Same, OP, and the thing is i know mine didn't when we met or i would have mentioned it. So sometime (i think since we had the DC) he started. Thank goodness the DC don't do it.

But i sit there at mealtimes seething inwardly trying not to see it.

Paska · 21/06/2020 14:17

So long as he's not making a mess, so what?

IwishIhadaMargarita · 21/06/2020 14:18

I can’t use a fork in my left hand I have to use my dominant hand. If anyone comments I just ask why it matters to them and would they rather see me drop a meal all night ver the floor? Lighten up ffs

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/06/2020 14:19

LTB

user8558 · 21/06/2020 14:19

I know it's irrational Paska, am as I annoyed with myself as I am at him.

It's like someone who insists on deliberately mispronouncing something.

It doesn't matter but it grates.

DramaAlpaca · 21/06/2020 14:20

I know it's extremely shallow but I couldn't be in a relationship with someone who held their knife like a pen. It would be a permanent irritation. It even annoys me any time I see a total stranger doing it, or someone on TV Grin

Calyx72 · 21/06/2020 14:20

Like this?

DH holds his knife like a pen
Justgivemewine · 21/06/2020 14:22

YANBU my dh does it too and its makes me cringe.

Alsohuman · 21/06/2020 14:23

My stepdaughter does it. Her brothers hold their knives correctly as does their dad. No idea where she’s got it from. I can’t look.

OhTheRoses · 21/06/2020 14:25

It would drive me nuts op. DH had learnt the proper way by the time I met him but MIL and late FIL don't hold cutlery properly and AFAIAC have poor table manners generally.

It's one of those things where if you were brought up to know how you can't help noticing.

AIMD · 21/06/2020 14:26

I hate the way my husband shakes salt. Like it literally makes me feel angry inside. Obviously I don’t act out that anger but I do get an intense feeling of annoyance watching him salt anything. It’s bizarre!!!

rainbowunicorn · 21/06/2020 14:31

It looks awful, I don't blame you for being irritated OP it would drive me mad as well. It is like watching a toddler learning how to eat properly. I suppose it is slightky better than the ones that shovel everything in with a spoon.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/06/2020 14:32

I'd have had to correct it v early in the relationship.

Plumplumbadum · 21/06/2020 14:33

Yes, mine holds both his knife and fork like a pen. I can't even watch him eat. Another thing that makes me want to throttle him is that he always puts salt and pepper on his food before he even tries it.
I lost it one day and I said I season my food well so why do it. He said because he knows what my food tastes like and it needs it. But he also does it no matter who cooks. Arghhhhhhhh.

Andwoooshtheyweregone · 21/06/2020 14:37

Yanbu I can’t stand it when people do one of the below 3 things;

  1. Hold their knife and fork in the wrong hands
  2. hold their knife or fork incorrectly.
  3. When they don’t put their knife and fork together at the end of a meal.

My grandma was so strict on mealtime manners and it’s rubbed off on me.

WhatsTheFrequencyKennneth · 21/06/2020 14:44

@Ijustwantedafringe36 I couldn't visualise it either, had to get a knife from the kitchen and try out the different poses. Have never noticed anyone doing it before. I hate the scooping fork motion personally.
