DH holds his knife like a pen

It drives me nuts.

It's pathetic that it irritates me the way it does. I don't nag him. I don't even bring it up (once ten years ago I did point out it wasn't the correct way, he asked what it was to me, I said it drives me crazy but that that's my issue)

It drives me silently crazy every day.

I'm ridiculous, why can't I just let it go?

There's a guy at work who eats with both knife and fork clutched in his fists, in a sort of frantic shovelling action.

Thankfully he's on a different squad to me so we only really cross over if he's doing overtime, but I'm so incensed by it I have to leave the room.

Bawdrip · 21/06/2020 15:08

A relative of mine does this and it silently riles me. I know it's unreasonable but it does. She also says Toozday instead of Tuesday and it makes me seethe. I also can't stand people holding a pen the wrong way. I'm aware I have issues and I'm trying to get past them. I also can't stand "pardon?"

GinnyStrupac · 21/06/2020 15:12

it might become a deal breaker

I assume you are joking, otherwise YABVU.

Andwoooshtheyweregone · 21/06/2020 15:13

@jamandtonic I know left handed people who use their fork and knife correctly.

@IwishIhadaMargarita this is a lighthearted thread (one I didn’t start) and lots of people are saying the same as me I’m not sure why you’ve singled me out? It seems that those who use their cutlery incorrectly are really defensive about it.

Disclaimer: this clearly does not include those who physically cannot hold a knife or fork for medical reasons ect

Zhampagne · 21/06/2020 15:14

I’m left-handed and use cutlery correctly, having been taught by my left-handed mother who also manages it.

SummerDayWinterEvenings · 21/06/2020 15:15

I once finished with someone as he held his knife and fork in his fists -drove me insane. I broke up with him after a few weeks. I couldn't cope with it.

Yvonne Stuart-Hargreaves, is that you?

percheron67 · 21/06/2020 15:19

I would notice. Not quite as bad as continuing to hold irons aloft whilst chewing, pointing with said irons and chewing with mouth open. Also, I detest the sloppy American way of using just a fork to eat.

BikeRunSki · 21/06/2020 15:19

DSis holds her knife like a pen
I eat left handed
This has disturbed DM’s genteel leanings for nearly 50 decades, No amount of grandchildren, graduations, new jobs, qualifications, naice boyfriends, loyal DHs etc can outweigh our dodgy eating habits.

Myownname · 21/06/2020 15:20

When I met my dh 12 years ago (married for 9) he held his knife correctly, ate quietly and also didn’t bite his nails. We had chats where I’d said that those things would have been deal breakers for me (2nd marriage btw so we are older). He was trying to make a good impression, so he obviously does know better, but now holds his knife like a pen when we eat at home, he eats noisily (but I think that’s because he is going a bit deaf and can’t hear himself) and he does bite his nails. I do love him and won’t be leaving, but he definitely did hide those things from me, and I now have to just try not to look at him when he’s doing them. So in my opinion YANBU.

Guylan · 21/06/2020 15:20

Hold their knife and fork in the wrong hands

I am left handed and it’s just so much easier for me to do it the other way round. I admit I cringe at seeing people hold a knife like a pen but I am being silly really to cringe.

DotBall · 21/06/2020 15:23

I know it's extremely shallow but I couldn't be in a relationship with someone who held their knife like a pen. It would be a permanent irritation. It even annoys me any time I see a total stranger doing it, or someone on TV

I’m the same. 😀

allaglow · 21/06/2020 15:23

I couldn't have married him.

Malbecblooms · 21/06/2020 15:24

My husband shovels with a fork and it causes Mr great upset. He grew up very working class but we now move very much in black tie dinner circles and it troubles me when I see the fork being used as a shovel in polite company.

It also means he opens his mouth very wide.

Malbecblooms · 21/06/2020 15:25
  • me not Mr
Bertucci · 21/06/2020 15:26

I actually wouldn’t have married him.

missbipolar · 21/06/2020 15:27

Not totally on topic but why is it rude if you hold your knife and fork in the "wrong" hands?

Happynow001 · 21/06/2020 15:27

I do agree but I'm actually more concerned if someone (especially sitting opposite me) is eating with their mouth open... 🤢

Leglump · 21/06/2020 15:28

I think your only option is to quickly stab him in the hand. Firstly it will teach him that it’s wrong to do it, and secondly, he’ll have to re-learn whilst the wound heals.
Cruel to be kind etc.

Leglump · 21/06/2020 15:28

Missbipolar it’s just wrong.

I think this is what OP means if anyone is struggling to visualize it

IwishIhadaMargarita · 21/06/2020 15:30

@Andwoooshtheyweregone I’m only defensive because I’m sick of people saying it’s ‘wrong’, wrong according to who. It’s easiest and most comfortable and i Singled you out as you said it was something you couldn’t stand. It’s like saying being left handed is wrong. My left hand is an idiot!

recycledteenager24 · 21/06/2020 15:30

my being left hand dominant to hold my knife is wrong according to some posters ? if someone told me to my face i was wrong i'd tell them to jog on and mind their own.

Looks like a perfectly normal way to hold a knife to me. I may be a WC Northern woman though.

CinnabarRed · 21/06/2020 15:32

Seriously, can someone post pictures of the right and wrong way to hold a knife? Because I’m really not getting it, even after getting a knife and a pen out and practicing.
