To be shocked that DP has never had a jam sandwich before?

DP and myself took DS to the park this morning, having a little picnic watching the ducks. Jam sarnies and fruit. Lovely.
DP comes out with the statement that he’s never, ever had a jam sandwich before and how nice it was, just like jam on toast.
He’s 35! How has he got to this stage in life and not had a jam sarnie?!

Weirdo!
I haven’t had a jam sandwich in ages. Really fancy one now.

cologne4711 · 20/06/2020 14:45

I may have had a jam sandwich as a child but I cannot ever remember eating one. I'm not keen on soggy bread (or toast) with jam.

However, what I have had is bread with plain Philadelphia cheese on it (other brands available) and then put jam on too. It tastes like cheesecake. Yummy.

mouse70 · 20/06/2020 14:46

I made a Golden Syrup sandwich yesterday!!!!!

WitchQueenofDarkness · 20/06/2020 14:47

I don't think I've ever had on either. All my sandwiches have been savoury.

Mycatsmellsbad · 20/06/2020 14:47

I’ve never had a jam sandwich, or jam on toast. To me it’s mixing sweet and savoury which is just all kinds of wrong.

Cauterize · 20/06/2020 14:48

I think he's very fortunate to have never been subjected to a jam sandwich.

My mum made them all the time when I was a kid and I hated them. I don't think I could stomach it now. Maybe if somebody paid me to eat one?

Rumtopf · 20/06/2020 14:49

Jam, honey and golden syrup sandwiches were my Nanna's idea of a picnic or a packed lunch for school. Honey is my favourite as the edges go a bit crunchy after a while.

Dh had never had a fish finger sandwich before we got together. Philistine.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/06/2020 14:49

I've never had one. I don't like jam, it's too sickly.

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/06/2020 14:49

I haven’t had them either. We used to get butter sandwiches

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 20/06/2020 14:50

Well now I’m just sat here agog at the jam sarnie haters!

Ooh,golden syrup sandwiches.
These were emergency rations that my dad carried in hip pocket on walks he took us on as kids.
We'd get to a certain stage in the walk, sit on a rock and eat the slightly squashed sandwiches.
I like the idea of jam but just don't eat it except sparingly on a scone(before the cream)

PotholeParadise · 20/06/2020 14:53

I don't think my mother approved of jam. The sugar, I think. I had my first ever jam sandwich when she took me to stay with one particular new boyfriend who was very keen on strawberry jam.

WhatWouldDominicDo · 20/06/2020 14:53

Another one who's never had a jam sandwich. Sounds horrible - sandwiches should be savoury things. I've never had Nutella with bread either fwiw.

elQuintoConyo · 20/06/2020 14:53

Yeuk jam sandwiches.

Crisp sandwich - now you're talking! Just introduced 47yo DH to them, he says they're his nemesis!

A favourite when I was a teen, bored alone for hours, was Coco pop and sultana sandwiches, with shite white bread.

Sidge · 20/06/2020 14:54

My brother loved lemon curd sandwiches when we were little. Can you even get that still??!

I like jam on toast. Haven’t had a jam buttie for ages though.

TheWernethWife · 20/06/2020 14:54

"Jam Sandwich" - how posh is that.

Jam Butty up here in the north, love them. Got to be good jam though.

Ontheboardwalk · 20/06/2020 14:55

Not a fan of jam sandwiches but really want a golden syrup butty now!

OneForMeToo · 20/06/2020 14:57

No never had one also never had Yorkshire puddings as a desert.

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 20/06/2020 14:58

@TheWernethWife I’m from a council estate in Hull, nothing posh about me Grin

I don't think I have ever had one, and I'm much older than your DP.
Jam on toast, yes (normally with peanut butter though). But not between 2 slices of bread. Doesn't seem appealing. I will probably go my entire life without ever having one.

BlankTimes · 20/06/2020 15:01

We often had the following sandwich fillings when I was a kid

Jam

Sultanas

Mashed banana and sugar

Heinz sandwich spread

Tomato Sauce

Brown sauce

Salad cream

Crisps

orangejuicer · 20/06/2020 15:02

My DP had apparently never had a toastie before until I made him one a few weeks ago. He's 42.

AdaColeman · 20/06/2020 15:15

I’d never heard of fish finger sandwiches till I joined MN, now I’ve tried one, but I’m not converted!

My Ex used to have condensed milk sandwiches, which I thought was really weird.

On the other hand, when I was a child, my Mother used to sprinkle hundreds and thousands on buttered bread as a treat!

happymummy12345 · 20/06/2020 15:18

I love them. Got to be strawberry jam for me and on white bread. Really want one now

TheThingWithFeathers · 20/06/2020 15:21

I've never had a jam sandwich. I like jam on toast but for some reason I think it would be weird on soft bread!
