To be shocked that DP has never had a jam sandwich before?

DP and myself took DS to the park this morning, having a little picnic watching the ducks. Jam sarnies and fruit. Lovely.
DP comes out with the statement that he’s never, ever had a jam sandwich before and how nice it was, just like jam on toast.
He’s 35! How has he got to this stage in life and not had a jam sarnie?!

There are some weird as fuck people on here. Never had a jam sandwich? Never had jam? To me, that’s like saying you’ve never had potato or apple or cheese.

Absolute staple foodstuff.

Mycatsmellsbad · 20/06/2020 17:19

@dollydonemore I’ve never had cheese...

Namechangex10000 · 20/06/2020 17:21

I’ve never had a ham sandwich.

Namechangex10000 · 20/06/2020 17:21

Jam!!!!! Jam sandwich!!!

Namechangex10000 · 20/06/2020 17:21

Also never had cheese!!

DollyDoneMore · 20/06/2020 17:22

@Mycarsmellsbad please eat some cheese. How have you not eaten cheese?

DollyDoneMore · 20/06/2020 17:23

Well, it’s even weirder than never having a jam sandwich.

Brings back being a child! Lovely memories

I tell you what is nice in a jam sandwich, Philadelphia cheese. One side jam one side cheese!

GlamGiraffe · 20/06/2020 17:53

I thought all children would have been given one in a quick hurry, especially 30+ years ago. Maybe he doesn't remember, people used to have them at childrens parties.

notacooldad · 20/06/2020 17:55

To me it’s mixing sweet and savoury which is just all kinds of wrong
But bread is neutral so it could have sweet or savoury on it.
lemon curd. Can you even get that still??! of course you can. Dh usually picks a jar ip when he does the shopping.
I'll have a jam buttie if it's a long way to tea time and I'm hungry.

Nottherealslimshady · 20/06/2020 17:59

I dont think I have. I've had jam on toast but soggy jam sandwiches dont appeal to me at all.

CoffeeRunner · 20/06/2020 18:00

I was never allowed a jam sandwich as a child - my mother considered them extremely “common”. The same as chip butties.

I have had them as an adult but they still feel like forbidden fruit to me Grin.

We were allowed lemon curd sandwiches though - not sure how that’s less common Grin.

I haven’t had cheese either.
ILiveInSalemsLot · 20/06/2020 18:03

I’ve never had a jam sandwich either. Or jam on toast.

I’ve had jam with croissants and scones though.

HaudMaDug · 20/06/2020 18:04

Get yourselves some mature cheddar and rasp jam on a sandwich.
It will blow your mind. Smile

Exactly this. Wrong. We rarely had jam at all growing up, sandwiches were always cheese, marmite, or other savoury fillings and the habit has stuck, my DCs never have jam on sandwiches or toast either - we use it on scones, mix with yogurt as pudding or use in baking but that's all.

You both will be horrified to find out that some people put jam on Yorkshire pudding for pudding
Ginkypig · 20/06/2020 18:11

In Scotland they were called a piece and jam.
There was a whole song dedicated to the humble piece

Ginkypig · 20/06/2020 18:12

Sorry or a jeely piece

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 18:12

You both will be horrified to find out that some people put jam on Yorkshire pudding for pudding - in my family it's golden syrup. Otherwise eaten as a starter with onion gravy. Just not on the main plate. Jam, no.

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 18:14

Although I should add that's just family, it breaks the sweet/savoury rule for me.

frazzledasarock · 20/06/2020 18:15

Just checked with my DP, he hasn’t either! He’s almost 40!

notso · 20/06/2020 18:17

Does anyone remember chocolate spread as a sandwich filling?

I fondly remember the rare excitement of biting into what I though was a marmite sandwich in my packed lunch and finding out it was chocolate spread!

I only like jam on the crust of a fresh loaf of proper bread. I don't like it in a sandwich especially if it's been wrapped up for a while. I feel the same about ham and it has to be dry ham and thick cut, preferably cooked by me.
I'm really, really fussy about sandwiches in general though, and only really eat ones made by me, my Mum or DH. I won't eat slice bread ever.
I didn't used like the ones my Dad made as they were always crummy because he didn't wipe the breadboard and he would wipe the knife on the top of them 🤢

JellyfishandShells · 20/06/2020 18:21

Had them as a child but not since - sandwich=savoury to me. Don’t think it ever occurred to me to give them to my children, though crustless honey sandwiches were part of getting over a cold appetite tempter so I cant claim any kind of logic !
