To be shocked that DP has never had a jam sandwich before?

DP and myself took DS to the park this morning, having a little picnic watching the ducks. Jam sarnies and fruit. Lovely.
DP comes out with the statement that he’s never, ever had a jam sandwich before and how nice it was, just like jam on toast.
He’s 35! How has he got to this stage in life and not had a jam sarnie?!

Jam sandwiches
Condensed milk, in anything. My Brother used to love it on its own.
Banana, sugar and evap
Yorkshire pudding with golden syrup and double cream.

I always keep tins of evaporated milk in. It reminds me of being a kid.
I can just drink it from the tin.
DH hates it, he doesn’t say, but I’m sure he thinks it’s very common
He was brought up very middle class...I wasn’t!! Grin

Jam sandwich the thought of it makes me feel sick. I tried jam on toast once and hated it.

megletthesecond · 20/06/2020 22:54

I've never had a jam sandwich. Don't really like jam.

AriettyHomily · 20/06/2020 22:55

Never had one don't want one.

Du waxes lyrical about sugar on toast, dripping on toast, banana on toast.

Thankfully I've had no need.

I don't mean this in a snobby way but I get the impression that jam sandwiches might be quite working class.

My parents were working class but lived in quite a middle class area so we had to kind of pretend to be middle class. My mum made jam sandwiches, which I never used to like. But other people's parents never made them, always got cheese or ham sandwiches.

The posh people I know only seem to use jam on scones, and tbh I have adapted to this as well so if never consider using jam in a sandwich.

Oh and jam in the middle of a bowl of porridge... Is that normal? I have no idea.

Gunpowder · 20/06/2020 23:07

Does this thread remind anyone else of the ‘hamwich’ thread? It was a few years ago. Quite possibly a troll but very funny at the time.

Noconceptofnormal I think in porridge no but in rice pudding yes!

🤷‍♀️
We were middle class and quite well off but both parents had a sweet tooth. Jam buttie were a nice snack. I still have them maybe once a week if I dont feel like a meal. I like marmalade sandwiches as well.

Perfectly normal.

So many people here who have never experienced good quality bread and jam. You are really missing out! My preference is for homemade sourdough with a tart jam such as gooseberry or blackcurrant.

Jenasaurus · 21/06/2020 00:13

I used to love marmalade sandwiches, think Paddington got me into them, sometimes I would add a sausage

Serin · 21/06/2020 09:01

My friend lived In a village known in their area as "jam butty town" because it used to be poorer than all the other surrounding villages.
It has recently erected a statue of a child eating a jam butty.
My DC have never had a jam butty but I will make them some later in honour of this thread.

Whatwouldnanado · 21/06/2020 09:18

Working class? Rubbish. The Queen loves jam pennies, ie strawberry jam butties stamped put with a pastry cutter. Personally I love proper butter and homemade black currant jam.

HaudMaDug · 21/06/2020 11:56

@Jenasaurus
That's todays menu sorted. Can't believe I've never tried marmalade and sausage sandwich before so I'm off to crack open the new jar of Dundee and a couple of bangers. Thanks

ExpletiveDelighted · 21/06/2020 12:41

There is no way I'm going to put jam on my delicious homemade sourdough, sorry.

We have homemade - non-sourdough - bread which I'm also not sullying with our - also homemade - jam.

They do not need to meet each other at close quarters!

My dad used to make Roses lime marmalade and Cheshire cheese sarnies with knobbly wholegrain bread and lots of butter. Gorgeous.
