To be shocked that DP has never had a jam sandwich before?

DP and myself took DS to the park this morning, having a little picnic watching the ducks. Jam sarnies and fruit. Lovely.
DP comes out with the statement that he’s never, ever had a jam sandwich before and how nice it was, just like jam on toast.
He’s 35! How has he got to this stage in life and not had a jam sarnie?!

Pancakes with jam.

Uh sorry...got distracted thinking about all the things I love with jam...

WildOrchids67 · 20/06/2020 15:59

Jammy piece here in Scotland. Had one the other day.

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 20/06/2020 16:00

@PumpkinPie2016 he’s just as northern as me! We don’t really ever have scones or things like that, jam has always been a sandwich filling in my family.

I've had them as a child but now prefer jam with peanut butter. I wouldn't make myself a jam sandwich, it feels a bit juvenile for some reason? I certainly wouldn't make them as a picnic for other adults, it's more kids tea party to me! I've offered them to the kids but they prefer cheese or ham.

Starksforthewin · 20/06/2020 16:03

I’ve never had a jam sandwich either.

If I saw one in someone’s packed lunch, I would assume they were down on their luck somewhat, and couldn’t afford a proper sandwich filling. All that sugar! Sandwiches are supposed to be savoury!

GreyishDays · 20/06/2020 16:05

I’d think that too, Starks that they’d run out of anything ‘better’. I think of the sandwich as the sensible part of the packed lunch. I suppose you could mix it all up and have a jam sandwich alongside a cheese salad though.

Boireannachlaidir · 20/06/2020 16:08

People eat so much sickly sweet crap nowadays that a good old fashioned jam sandwich almost seems wholesome.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 20/06/2020 16:10

Never had a jam sandwich, or a crisp sandwich or a fish finger sandwich. I'd have jam on a piece or fresh bread though or a with a croissant.

RaraRachael · 20/06/2020 16:14

I've never had a jam sandwich in my life - or a banana sandwich. When I was growing up certain things were considered "proper" sandwich fillings - meat, salmon (never tuna), cheese, egg. My awful snob mother would have had something to say if she'd ever been offered a jam sandwich!

Ellmau · 20/06/2020 16:17

Does anyone remember chocolate spread as a sandwich filling?

Much better than Nutella, which isn't chocolate at all but only pretends to be.

EmbarrassedUser · 20/06/2020 16:21

Nope, never had one either @PawPatrolMakesMeDrink Just never fancied it.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/06/2020 16:27

i dont like the thought of a jam sandwich

Grunpy · 20/06/2020 16:28

I've never had a fish finger sandwich .
I do love chip butties with real white bread(not sliced),buttered and real chips.
We also had mashed banana sandwiches and thinly sliced apple and sugar sandwiches.

TheWernethWife · 20/06/2020 16:28

ErickBroch meant that calling it a Jam Sandwich was posh - Jam Butty up here in the north west, staple of my childhood.

SoleBizzz · 20/06/2020 16:29

Gross aswell as banana or peanut butter sandwiches.

SoleBizzz · 20/06/2020 16:30

Chocolate spread too.

BreatheAndFocus · 20/06/2020 16:31

Yummy! Jam sandwiches! I like a slightly tart jam like blackcurrant.

I was just coming on to mention sugar sandwiches but I see someone already has 😄 My mum had those not me. In my youth, I had:

Jam sandwiches
Golden syrup sandwiches (lovely with plenty of butter!)
Banana sandwiches (sliced ripe banana - always had these at the beach)

Mashed banana with a sprinkle of sugar was a quick dessert in my house.

SoleBizzz · 20/06/2020 16:36

Lemon curd on toast is nice

SimonJT · 20/06/2020 16:39

I don’t think I’ve ever had jam, it doesn’t seem appealing.

please don’t hurt me

Hoppit · 20/06/2020 16:48

No no @BreatheAndFocus, egg sandwiches were for the beach!

Mummyshark2018 · 20/06/2020 16:49

I've never had a jam sandwich. All my siblings love them but I've never fancied fruit in bread 😂

FunTimes2020 · 20/06/2020 16:51

@Juo

I packed DS up for school with jam sandwiches for years. Every single day. Wouldn't be allowed now. He's 24.
I have visions of a child in clothing made of jam sandwiches! Grin
SerenityNowwwww · 20/06/2020 16:52

Has he had a chip butty, fish finger sandwich or a fried egg roll?

wildthingsinthenight · 20/06/2020 16:52

LTB Grin

DappledThings · 20/06/2020 17:05

I used to have peanut butter and jam sandwiches all the time in my school packed lunches, never just jam.

I've just introduced DS to the pb and j sandwich and he loves it. DH tried it for the first time and was not impressed.
