To be shocked that DP has never had a jam sandwich before?

DP and myself took DS to the park this morning, having a little picnic watching the ducks. Jam sarnies and fruit. Lovely.
DP comes out with the statement that he’s never, ever had a jam sandwich before and how nice it was, just like jam on toast.
He’s 35! How has he got to this stage in life and not had a jam sarnie?!

I'm not sure I ever have either. That said I don't particularly like jam.

AnimalCrossing · 20/06/2020 15:23

They are grim he’s not missing out.

ErickBroch · 20/06/2020 15:24

I still have jam sandwiches now and my work colleagues all take the piss but really it's just easy and dead cheap. Cracking up at someone calling them posh - cheapest sandwich going!

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 15:29

I’ve never had a jam sandwich, or jam on toast. To me it’s mixing sweet and savoury which is just all kinds of wrong

Exactly this. Wrong. We rarely had jam at all growing up, sandwiches were always cheese, marmite, or other savoury fillings and the habit has stuck, my DCs never have jam on sandwiches or toast either - we use it on scones, mix with yogurt as pudding or use in baking but that's all.

My boyfriend didn’t know microwave popcorn existed until like a week ago

RoseyOldCrow · 20/06/2020 15:39

AdaColeman Condensed milk on buttered, thickly sliced bread: white ideally but brown is acceptable = utterly delicious!
Toasted is good too, but it needs to be applied in stages to stop everything soaking into the toast, which is criminal.

Cultural reference point: low-ish income family, North west England, 1970s. Everything was dull brown or grey in those days, apart from condensed milk which was a blob of gloopy, creamy heaven ❤

MrsBungle · 20/06/2020 15:40

I’ve never in my life had a jam sandwich and nether have my kids!

Prayerwheel · 20/06/2020 15:40

I'm 47 and have never had a jam sandwich. Or a crisp sandwich, or a chip one. Because they sound disgusting.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 20/06/2020 15:41

Golden syrup on Philadelphia. Mmmmm.
On the opposite end of scale, growing up in Australia A favourite sandwich was cold tinned spaghetti or baked beans. I couldn’t sit near anyone having it for lunch. 🤢

Horehound · 20/06/2020 15:42

Wtf crazy! He's not lived!

Horehound · 20/06/2020 15:43

Well, they aren't Hmm
Juo · 20/06/2020 15:44

I packed DS up for school with jam sandwiches for years. Every single day.
Wouldn't be allowed now. He's 24.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 20/06/2020 15:45

My favourite is cheese and jam sandwiches. People tell me that's weird Hmm

Juo · 20/06/2020 15:46

One of my favourite lunches is a slab of good bread thickly buttered with jam on.

PumpkinPie2016 · 20/06/2020 15:46

Jam butties are amazing Grin has he been living in a cave ShockGrin

You mention you are from the North,as am I, is he Southern? I only ask because my Dad is from Kent originally and was apparently astounded at some of the local specialities when he met my mum!! Oven bottom muffins, rag puddings, yorkshire ducks and 'specials' to name but a few. I think he thought he had landed on a different planet GrinGrin

7dayslater · 20/06/2020 15:47

I don't think I have either. Possibly as a child but it doesn't appeal to me at all! Confused

Ninkanink · 20/06/2020 15:48

Peanut butter and jam.

UnfinishedSymphon · 20/06/2020 15:49

Love jam sandwiches but only good strawberry jam

tiredanddangerous · 20/06/2020 15:50

Anything which makes the bread soggy is just wrong in a sandwich.

Ninkanink · 20/06/2020 15:50

Scones and jam. With clotted cream.

SlothRunner · 20/06/2020 15:51

@cologne4711

I may have had a jam sandwich as a child but I cannot ever remember eating one. I'm not keen on soggy bread (or toast) with jam.

However, what I have had is bread with plain Philadelphia cheese on it (other brands available) and then put jam on too. It tastes like cheesecake. Yummy.

I love this too! People think I am odd 🤷🏻‍♀️
Herbie0987 · 20/06/2020 15:51

Philadelphia and pineapple sandwiches, at room temperature. Teatime was always homemade jam sandwiches. DP lives golden syrup and sugary sandwiches.

Heismyopendoor · 20/06/2020 15:52

I’m 30 and never had one. I did have a pb&j sandwich for the first time a few weeks ago and it was delicious 😋

Minniee · 20/06/2020 15:55
