To be shocked that DP has never had a jam sandwich before?

DP and myself took DS to the park this morning, having a little picnic watching the ducks. Jam sarnies and fruit. Lovely.
DP comes out with the statement that he’s never, ever had a jam sandwich before and how nice it was, just like jam on toast.
He’s 35! How has he got to this stage in life and not had a jam sarnie?!

I never have either and I'm 56

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 18:26

Finding a sandwich that I thought to be marmite was in fact chocolate spread would be deeply disappointing. Especially if it turned out to be Nutella.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 20/06/2020 18:31

I remember a work colleague telling me she used to eat butter and jam on Weetabix! Shock
So weird.

ShinyMe · 20/06/2020 18:32

Next step up is a jam sandwich soaked in eggs, then fried.

Bargainhuntbore · 20/06/2020 18:32

Glass of milk and a jam sandwich was my hangover cure many many years ago!

AgeLikeWine · 20/06/2020 18:35

Jam & crunchy peanut butter is the best sandwich ever.

knittingaddict · 20/06/2020 18:51

One of my most vivid childhood memories was being made to sit at the table and not able to leave until I had forced down my jam sandwich. I was gagging and retching and I don't think I've eaten a jam sandwich since.

Parents, don't do this to your children, for the love of God.

I don't actually know any adults who would take a jam sandwich to eat at a picnic. I thought they were left behind with the dolls and toy cars. My mind is blown.

Ontheboardwalk · 20/06/2020 18:52

This thread has just reminded me of some lemon curd I got from Windermere just before lockdown started.

I’m off to find it and have it on some toast!!

knittingaddict · 20/06/2020 18:53

I do love a peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich though, so all is not lost.

Oysterbabe · 20/06/2020 18:53

I don't think I have either. I like jam on toast but jam sandwiches, or any sweet filling, just don't appeal to me.

Permanantlypuzzled · 20/06/2020 19:00

I have a black currant jam sandwich for breakfast every morning.
A fish finger sandwich is just weird.

ErickBroch · 20/06/2020 19:05

@Permanantlypuzzled I am now craving blackcurrant jam!

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 20/06/2020 19:09

I think my love of jam has come from making it every summer with my mum. We made raspberry, black currant, red currant, bramble and gooseberry jam.
Needed to be eaten on something!

I can't get my ahead around jam sandwiches just all kinds of wrong. Shouldn't there be some prentence of protien in a sandwich ? ( cheese, tuna, ham, chicken or marmite and cream cheese at a push) but jam ? Surely not ?

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 19:13

I like making jam far more than I like eating it. I make strawberry, bramble and raspberry most years. Still never eat it on toast or sandwiches though.

SerenityNowwwww · 20/06/2020 19:14

Never heard of a cucumber sandwich? No proteins there either.

PhilSwagielka · 20/06/2020 19:15

He hasn't lived.

And now I want a jam sandwich (preferably raspberry).

SerenityNowwwww · 20/06/2020 19:15

It has to have butter though.

notacooldad · 20/06/2020 19:17

Does anyone remember chocolate spread as a sandwich filling?
The kids I work with love a choc spread butty. I prefer syrup.

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/06/2020 19:17

Everything needs protein, you'll die otherwise.

notacooldad · 20/06/2020 19:18

Everything needs protein, you'll die otherwise
😂😂😂

SerenityNowwwww · 20/06/2020 19:19

I don’t think the odd jeeely peece will kill you.

Mycatsmellsbad · 20/06/2020 19:20

I grew up on cucumber sandwiches and plain boiled rice. How I made it to adulthood I’ll never know. My poor mum. She would have loved for me to at least try a jam sandwich!

hopefulhalf · 20/06/2020 19:22

I think cucumber sandwiches are odd too.

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 19:22

I had a long spell of taking cucumber sandwiches to school as my packed lunch too, out of choice. I remember the conversation, "just cucumber, are you sure?" "yes, just cucumber"
