Churchill removed from Google

But they've left Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini.

If you Google "British prime ministers" you'll get them all, along with images but Churchill's photo has been replaced with a holder (they've also forgotten his first term).

Google world war two leaders and Churchill's picture is still gone, but Hitler et al. are still up.

AIBU to think this is nuts?

Disgusting

MorganKitten · 14/06/2020 19:46

Googled him and he’s still there.

PerkingFaintly · 14/06/2020 20:04

@TheVoiceOfReasonableness, you imagine wrong.Grin

Dear me, looks like frantically googling an issue you know fuck all about isn't really working for you.

Ahhh, I'm having a flashback to SGM's "I AM CANADIAN", but I didn't namechange and keep having to delete the things I'm itching to say!

Suffice it to say, despite my own family's very explicit and direct benefits from Rhodes' actions, both during and after his lifetime, I despise the old bugger.

@GinDrinker00

If it wasn’t for Churchill we’d all be nazis... but hey let’s remove him from history. This is just getting out of hand! What next? Should we just get rid of the government completely?
If it wasn’t for Churchill we’d all be nazis... but hey let’s remove him from history.

I spoke to somebody yesterday who said "None of other stuff he did matters, all that is important is that he won the war" Shock

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/06/2020 20:08

I just looked. He's there

PerkingFaintly · 14/06/2020 20:14

Sorry, should add that I keep deleting my drafts because they're outing, not because they're rude!

TheVoiceOfReasonableness · 14/06/2020 20:19

@PerkingFaintly

No frantic Googling, just a history degree but never mind, I’m not offended.

Just out of interest, do you write from an Afrikaner perspective?

PerkingFaintly · 14/06/2020 20:36

Yeah, I have one of those as well.

Mine isn't in the history of South Africa – and clearly yours isn't either!

But I unavoidably know quite a lot of the history. No, I'm not writing from an Afrikaner perspective, although of course some of us are Afrikaans-speaking. The chunk of family I had in mind were mostly English-speaking South Africans.

Actually I'm talking to one tomorrow who would have reason to know more about any Afrikaner campaigning about the statue at UCT. I might ask.

PerkingFaintly · 14/06/2020 21:07

I mean, seriously, if you're looking for a "shades of grey" figure, pick someone easier.

I'm perfectly prepared to study and understand him in the context of his time, in which many people (well, the ones he wasn't crushing) found him laudable. But when I take my historian's hat off, I'm good to go with, What A Bastard.

BTW on the back of this thread I've just gone and read bits of his annotated will, published with other writings by and about him:
archive.org/stream/lastwilltestamen00rhodiala/lastwilltestamen00rhodiala_djvu.txt

This effortlessly confirms what I said above that, in that era, "race" could refer to (what were seen as) different white races:

p31
If Mr. Rhodes's trust should be the means of our getting some gigantic Colonials or even Boers, for he excludes no race who can do great things, say, at putting the weight, we may be able to wipe out Cambridge altogether !

p51
WHEN Mr. Rhodes died, the most conspicuous figure left in the English-speaking race since the death of Queen Victoria disappeared.

p58
" I contend that we are the first race in the world, and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race. I contend that every acre added to our territory means the birth of more of the English race who otherwise would not be brought into existence.

ispepsiokay · 15/06/2020 00:19

@OrangeCinnamon yes I've read the thread and replied to the op to say that on my phone Churchill is removed but is definitely there when my husband googles.

Do you require further clarification of my answer to the op?

user1471565182 · 15/06/2020 05:00

@andyoldlabour Churchill used diphenylaminechloroarsine against the bolsheviks, which causing vomiting and incapacitation. His interest was in gas that wouldnt kill but prevent them from fighting

You'ver just been shown how greece was a lie. How he suggested using tear gas (but never did) in iraq and iran, how the bengal famine was a result of war and a cyclone and famines still go on in india. Stop talking nonsense.

user1471565182 · 15/06/2020 05:05

You seem to also have missed my criticisms of churchill and the right. I dont need lies to support my left wing views.

Aridane · 15/06/2020 09:21

I don't think we should be made to wipe out our history.

Nobody is, I think, trying to wipe out history- just more to have slave traders etc commemorated and celebrated through public memorials

To be fair the world of total censorship by an unelected group has more in common with Hitler and Stalin than it does with Churchill, maybe that's why they approved of by the thought police.

Exactly, we should ignore all the evil deeds/acts/crimes committed by a deeply racist person - because they won the war.
He didn't win the war, other brave young men and women did, mostly Russian civilians and soldiers, because without them we would have lost the war.
Churchill has been placed on a pedestal he didn't deserve.
