Churchill removed from Google

DivGirl · 14/06/2020 07:15

But they've left Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini.

If you Google "British prime ministers" you'll get them all, along with images but Churchill's photo has been replaced with a holder (they've also forgotten his first term).

Google world war two leaders and Churchill's picture is still gone, but Hitler et al. are still up.

AIBU to think this is nuts?

I thought you got all your history from statues? so why does it matter?

jokolo · 14/06/2020 08:23

It's true it's very possible the photo was removed from Wikipedia!

montyliesandmontycries · 14/06/2020 08:25

Just google ‘Churchill’. It’s all there from photos to history to family home. FFS.
One photo missing from a line up of pms and the world goes paranoid.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 14/06/2020 08:26

Looking like some nightshift intern's little protest.

chomalungma · 14/06/2020 08:27

So it's either a Google conspiracy or Wikipedia - either carried out by someone who is anti Churchill or someone trying to provoke outrage deliberately on the other end of the political spectrum.

Maybe it's Russia.....

BashStreetKid · 14/06/2020 08:28

@chomalungma

It's true No picture from 1951 - 1955 and no mention of 1940 - 1945

This is going to go viral this morning.

The horror! They haven't mentioned 1923-31 or 1970-74 either. Are they trying to erase Wilson, Baldwin and MacDonald from history?

Or maybe the algorithm just puts in the relevant PM's last terms of office?

Musicforsmorks · 14/06/2020 08:29

Not sure Churchill had much respect for women.
That’ll get ya’ll going.

I love how puritanical many are on here until there’s a WLM ......

lovepickledlimes · 14/06/2020 08:29

@jokolo just been on Wikipedia itself and hos picture is still there

NurseButtercup · 14/06/2020 08:31

He hasn't been scrubbed from the internet, give it a rest. His image and key information is still on these pages:

www.gov.uk/government/history/past-prime-ministers/winston-churchill

www.britannica.com/biography/Winston-Churchill

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Churchill

FlamingoAndJohn · 14/06/2020 08:31

How long has it been missing for. I can’t say I’ve ever done that google deserve before.

chomalungma · 14/06/2020 08:31

Or maybe the algorithm just puts in the relevant PM's last terms of office

Bit of a crap algorithm

ElizabethMainwaring · 14/06/2020 08:31

@Musicforsmorks
What's a WLM?

OrangeCinnamon · 14/06/2020 08:32

It's not like anyone is going to miss out on info is it

What was the name of that British Prime Minister again? I can picture his face...ooh I know i'll google British Prime Ministers . Oh no picture he can't have existed ...i'll stop there then Hmm

Meowstro · 14/06/2020 08:32

I'm British and have no probelm with BLM. Black people can be British too Hmm How exactly should we be standing up for ourselves @Bluemoooon ? I'd be more concerned about standing up against the disgusting behaviour yesterday because that makes British people look like hooligans. Kicking over a picnic, spitting on an innocent woman and verbally attacking the group in numbers. Lovely standing up for ourselves, isn't it? Angry

Google have said they haven't done anything and I suspect even if they did, it'd be more the assumption that they should remove him or an agent provocateur. It's just pitting people against each other now, it all seems to be getting rather dystopian.

I have no problem with the statue, Churchill and his greater good but that being said, it makes a point about how black history has been erased from Britain whilst robbing everyone else of everything and claiming it as theirs at the same time. Black history in Britain isn't just slavery, btw, yet children are never taught it. Imagine if some of your greatest history is never taught, forgotten because it's not celebrating the achievements of your own race and deemed irrelevant?

BashStreetKid · 14/06/2020 08:36

@chomalungma

Or maybe the algorithm just puts in the relevant PM's last terms of office

Bit of a crap algorithm

But not a sinister one. Disappointing for some, I know.
OrangeCinnamon · 14/06/2020 08:37

@meowstro a small organisation , london based but some good resources on younghistoriansproject.org if you know anyone that could make use.

Agree with what you say just wanted to point out a little known resource

Hmmph · 14/06/2020 08:38

Shocked at the results to Women killed in 2020. That is erasure Shock

chocolateequinox · 14/06/2020 08:40

Part of me wonders if it was intentionally, originally I thought it was a bug but then as a test I googled South African Prime Ministers and Cecil Rhodes is also missing on Google. If Churchill was missing and Rhodes remained then I'd say bug but Google could easily justify removing Rhodes if they choose to.

woodhill · 14/06/2020 08:45

Yes very strange

The information needs to be there to allow people to do research etc hoping it is actually accurate

The libraries are not open so you cannot even use books instead.

Do students still use textbooks or is everything now online?

chomalungma · 14/06/2020 08:45

Shocked at the results to Women killed in 2020. That is erasure

Except

Maybe if the people who search for that are the kind of people who do a lot of searching about trans issues, then Google probably assumes they are very interested in trans issues and shows them what they want to see.

Churchill removed from Google
jokolo · 14/06/2020 08:56

@lovepickledlimes I searched the editing history for Churchill and his picture appears to have been removed and reinstated and the article on semi-protection 14th June

It's not entirely clear as they first deny the request and then say it's already been done - but it seems at first blush to be wiki-connected:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Winston_Churchill#Semi-protected_edit_request_on_14_June_2020

jokolo · 14/06/2020 08:58

Women killed 2020 happens if you are logged out/ new IP/ search history blocked or flushed. It's the default behaviour, not a profiled one.

BaileysforBreakfast · 14/06/2020 09:00

OMG - this has to be an ANTIFA or FAR LEFT plot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only logical explanation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are TRYING to ERASE our gLUORIOS history!
Hmm

Or... could it be 'the other side' playing with your minds to distract from all the dickish behaviour that went on yesterday?

Oh, sorry, does that sound absurd?

Whatever it is, better start knitting your foil helmets.

jokolo · 14/06/2020 09:08

Sigh. I also have no problem with BLM. I support BLM.

This is what I meant by culture-warred off the table.

C8H10N4O2 · 14/06/2020 09:08

Luckily the shops open tomorrow so we can all stock up on tin foil hats. I believe the DM is giving one free with each copy.
