Churchill removed from Google

DivGirl · 14/06/2020 07:15

But they've left Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini.

If you Google "British prime ministers" you'll get them all, along with images but Churchill's photo has been replaced with a holder (they've also forgotten his first term).

Google world war two leaders and Churchill's picture is still gone, but Hitler et al. are still up.

AIBU to think this is nuts?

If you want British people to stand up for themselves and not support BLM this is the way to do it.

So on the one hand you can support equality but no way a small photo is missing off a search engine! fuck equality!

I don't live in the UK and i am constantly being asked by perfectly rational people WTF is happening in my homeland. And i can't explain it.

montyliesandmontycries · 14/06/2020 09:35

Wise up. All the information is there, including how controversial he was even in his day, and yes he was racist, and he did believe that white Britons were a superior race, ( "the Aryan stock is bound to triumph” is a direct quote from when he was a MP)
and he did all sort of nasty shit like exporting food during the Bengal famine while the people, 3 million died, and refused to re-direct any food despite his own British authorities begging him to and he suggested it was their own fault for ' breeding like rabbits' . He also advocated the use of poison gas in war, and he hated and spoke out against Gandhi ( "“I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion.” )and unleashed the barbaric Black & Tans on Ireland, and called black africans "savages" when he was a soldier there, oh and he defended the death camps in South Africa. He was in charge when the notorious Kenyan death camps were built, and responsible for the methods developed against the people there, like electrocution. He's on the record as being racist towards both the Palestinians and the Jewish people when he was Colonial Secretary.
He hated unions and had little time for working class people.

HOWEVER he was a great war time PM for Britain.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/06/2020 09:35

Although one of the links on Bing is about how he disappeared on Google.

merrymouse · 14/06/2020 09:36

If this is true, it’s absolutely disgraceful and quite frankly, heartbreaking.

But if true, who do you think is doing it?

HannahStern · 14/06/2020 09:38

@TheEmpressMatilda

It’s a bug, Google didn’t “censor” anything. FFS doesn’t anyone have any technical knowledge?
A functioning brain would be a big ask on this thread.
GetOffYourHighHorse · 14/06/2020 09:39

'goes deeper! Google 'Henry 8th children' and five pictures appear while another seven have no picture! Where will this conspiracy end???'

Henry's DC haven't been the focus of far left vandalism and attacks recently so I'm not sure what your point is tbh.

It may be a tech glitch but it does look conveniently timed.

MintyCedric · 14/06/2020 09:43

@Jkslays thanks for that. Have added the extension and will be steering clear of Google going forward.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 14/06/2020 09:43

Heartbreaking?

Wha...?

merrymouse · 14/06/2020 09:43

If you want British people to stand up for themselves and not support BLM this is the way to do it.

Why do you think somebody from BLM is bothering to remove photographs on Wikipedia? Why are they only removing the picture of Rhodes? Are they fine will all the other South African leaders up to Botha? Were they upset by Churchill, but happy with Eden?

If deliberate, this really seems more like an attempt to show that people are trying to 'remove our history', from somebody who only knows about statues.

Looking at the events in London yesterday, I think we know which people know little about history, but have a strange obsession with statues.

Brefugee · 14/06/2020 09:43

so upthread someone gave the answer but let's keep blaming the far left because that's so much easier.

Presumably someone tried to edit the Wiki article and replace the photo with something else and during that process someone with more power on Wiki protected it to prevent just that.

If you want a search engine other than Google try ecosia - they plant trees

Carolbaskinstiger · 14/06/2020 09:44

There is a lot of misunderstanding here about how search engines actually work. The results you see at the top are “snippets” google doesn’t have its own pages - it indexes and shows results from Ither websites - For theses types of “snippets” it’s mainly Wikipedia. Wikipedia can be edited by anyone. So is it deliberate (probably) but is it manufactured by google - no.

merrymouse · 14/06/2020 09:44

If deliberate, this really seems more like an attempt to show that people are trying to 'remove our history', from somebody who only knows about statues.

Or alternatively, this rumour has been fuelled by people who only know about statues.

Hmmph · 14/06/2020 09:44

We’re searching different things: list of women killed in 2020 gives different results to women killed in 2020, which has 50% of the results on the first page about trans women deaths.

Incidentally, now I appear I have unwittingly become someone who searches for trans things, by the very fact I am searching for women’s deaths Shock

But I feel like I am derailing the thread, which is actually about one small missing picture of Churchill which may or may not have been deliberately removed...

Carolbaskinstiger · 14/06/2020 09:45

Oh and as to who... most likely an individual wanting this exact type of result - uproar and more pitting people against each other.

For the other comments on women killed - google doesn’t show you what you see based on previous behaviour - results in organic search (not ads or map results) will be the same - however each search term will show a different set of results.

Carolbaskinstiger · 14/06/2020 09:47

Sorry to clarify - I should say - assuming you’re based in the same country.

CherryPavlova · 14/06/2020 09:47

No. Just googled and there he is.

merrymouse · 14/06/2020 09:48

so upthread someone gave the answer but let's keep blaming the far left because that's so much easier.

Presumably carried out by a far left person who hates Churchill but has a strange respect for Thatcher. Confused

creativecringe · 14/06/2020 09:51

Can someone on this thread make this point clear for me please. "If it wasn't for churchill, we would all be Nazi". I used to think this, until I came across information which stated that by the time Britain got defeat Germany. Hitler had already been defeated by other European countries.. I also, read an article around Dday which talk about who some of the eastern European countries fought Nazi Germany but they never hot their freedom until later on. So Dday to them is bitter sweet.

creativecringe · 14/06/2020 09:51

Question is, why does churchill always get the praise?

BashStreetKid · 14/06/2020 09:56

@GinDrinker00

If it wasn’t for Churchill we’d all be nazis... but hey let’s remove him from history. This is just getting out of hand! What next? Should we just get rid of the government completely?
Someone hasn't studied history any too closely.
worriedmama1980 · 14/06/2020 09:57

People need to read about search engine optimisation.

Google has various algorithms so that people are more likely to get what they want when they search: eg so it knows if you're more likely to be looking for the prime minister or insurance. Those pull out listicles are taken from other sites, they don't create them themselves. It would be easy enough if tech savvy to play the algorithm and distort that, though only for a short enough time till someone noticed.

Wikipedia scores highly on whatever metrics they use to make sure they're using 'legitimate' sites but wiki can obviously be changed by anyone, it relies on people calling o malicious edits. Like this, except people seem to think it's a giant conspiracy rather than one group of individuals, be they lefty or russian bot, who wanted to do this and whip up controversy.

Companies are constantly studying how these things work there's loads of info online, it's so if you're a wedding dress maker in wales you get yourself on the first page when someone Google's wedding dresses Wales. The info is all out there for people who want to do things like this.

Aridane · 14/06/2020 09:58

Try googling "women killed 2020" or "2019". The first page shows bepenised people who have been killed rather than women

Except that isn’t true - at least not for a ‘civilian’ Poster not obsessively searching for —anti— trans articles

merrymouse · 14/06/2020 09:59

Henry's DC haven't been the focus of far left vandalism and attacks recently

People have tried to remove statues. There hasn't been any campaign to remove them from the historical record.
