Churchill removed from Google

But they've left Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini.

If you Google "British prime ministers" you'll get them all, along with images but Churchill's photo has been replaced with a holder (they've also forgotten his first term).

Google world war two leaders and Churchill's picture is still gone, but Hitler et al. are still up.

AIBU to think this is nuts?

Yup, I'm going with "lots of editing of wikipedia (from both sides, probably some of it motivated by dubious attitudes) and a link got broken."

But, given how massively contentious this is at the moment, google do need to pull their finger out and sort it out, because it's not a minor glitch in terms of impact, it's now feeding into all sorts of nutso far right conspiracy theorists.

I googled South African Prime Ministers and Cecil Rhodes is also missing...

This may be because he was never PM of South Africa, but hey, let's not quibble.

This also has me rolling in the aisles. (For the first poster - the bolded bit - the clue is in the name... Rhodes... Rhodesia. Now Zimbabwe. )

GetOffYourHighHorse · 14/06/2020 11:08

'can't believe the number of very obvious right wing trolls that have appeared on these talk pages.'

Please do report any trolls, mnhq will delete.

Or do you just mean, for example, people don't think Churchill's monument should need protecting from arseholes and that protests should not go ahead in a pandemic? because that is generally what has being discussed on various threads, with criticism of thugs on both side included. I must've missed the 'far right trolls'.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 14/06/2020 11:12

Rhodes... Rhodesia. Now Zimbabwe.

Yep. He named a waterfall after the Queen, the capital Salisbury after the PM and the country after himself. Modest lad.

And Comrade Bob Mugabe was very careful to keep his more enthusiatic supporters away from the old boy's mausoleum, almost like he had precedent in mind. Bob was also very clear that the farm invasions did not extend to his predecessor Ian Smith, who lived out his days unmolested.

Very 'Animal Farm.'

ispepsiokay · 14/06/2020 11:13

Oddly Churchill isn't showing when I google but is when my DH does

slashlover · 14/06/2020 11:21

It's back up my google too.

OrangeCinnamon · 14/06/2020 11:22

Have you read the thread @ispepsiok

CaraDune · 14/06/2020 11:28

Mockers Grin I'm reading animal farm to DS at the moment. (I also have Zimbabwean friends who fled Mugabe's regime - wrong tribal allegiance from the POV of the government. Always very interesting talking to them about the situation back in Zimbabwe.)

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 14/06/2020 11:31

Everyone from Zim needs to read Animal Farm.

The parallels are spooky, not least Napoleon turning his dogs on Snowball.

RoLaren · 14/06/2020 11:31

Cecil Rhodes was leader of the Cape Colony, the predecessor to South Africa. So technically, geographically he was leader of the area of SA, but politically, never.

slashlover · 14/06/2020 11:32

It's fixed but we must be vigilant. A picture was temporarily removed from a specific search. Who knows what's next?

ImInYourMindFuzz · 14/06/2020 11:33

Try googling "women killed 2020" or "2019". The first page shows bepenised people who have been killed rather than women

Except that isn’t true - at least not for a ‘civilian’ Poster not obsessively searching for —anti— trans articles

Actually the trans articles came up for me and I’m not regularly searching for trans issues. But even so, I’m not pressed about it because I understand how search engines work, it seems a lot here don’t.

2beautifulbabs · 14/06/2020 11:34

It's disgusting I seriously can't believe what's happening to humanity right now.

You have extremists from both sides giving bad press with violence vandalism and destruction.

I don't think we should be made to wipe out our history.

It's disgusting that people are being disrespectful to all those that lost their lives in making sure we had a free country.

This blasted protest needs to end now our government need to get a back bone and be done with both sides of protestors enough is enough.

If you don't like our history there's the door don't let it slam you on the way out

Clavinova · 14/06/2020 11:36

this link to the warts and all truths about Churchill
One extremely biased paper with highly selective quotations. I started noting some of them but gave up. It's just too full of them. I wonder who wrote it?

This guy - Noam Chomsky;

"German newspaper Der Spiegel described [Noam] Chomsky as "the Ayatollah of anti-American hatred", while conservative commentator David Horowitz called him "the most devious, the most dishonest and...the most treacherous intellect in America", whose work is infused with "anti-American dementia" and evidences his "pathological hatred of his own country".Writing in Commentary magazine, the journalist Jonathan Kay described Chomsky as "a hard-boiled anti-American monomaniac who simply refuses to believe anything that any American leader says"."

"Chomsky's criticism of Israel has led to his being called a traitor to the Jewish people and an anti-Semite. Criticizing Chomsky's defence of the right of individuals to engage in Holocaust denial on the grounds that freedom of speech must be extended to all viewpoints, Werner Cohn called Chomsky "the most important patron" of the neo-Nazi movement" ...

OrangeCinnamon · 14/06/2020 11:40

Oooh I wonder where @DivGirl has gone?

merrymouse · 14/06/2020 11:46

Certainly lots of posters who haven't bothered to read the thread.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 14/06/2020 11:48

Cape Colony, the predecessor to South Africa.

In fact No.

Cape Colony is the old name for what is now Cape Provence, one part of the RSA.

Longdistance · 14/06/2020 11:48

support.google.com/websearch/thread/53297714?hl=en

This explains it. Still weird though.

ScarfLadysBag · 14/06/2020 11:52

These threads are amazing for gathering together people who have zero knowledge of how the internet works Grin Like there's a 'pictures of British Prime Ministers' department at Google HQ where they decided to get rid of ol Winston.

MissConductUS · 14/06/2020 11:55

Google world war two leaders and Churchill's picture is still gone, but Hitler et al. are still up.

Not in New York.

Churchill removed from Google
VeganCow · 14/06/2020 12:02

I just googled British prime ministers and Chrchills square and photo is there

Ijustreallywantacat · 14/06/2020 12:03

If I google 'women killed in 2019' or 2020, I get 3 articles on trans women. Top result is a counter for women killed in domestic violence. Nobody is forcing you to click on the results pertaining to trans women.

Of course there will be results for trans women in the list. They have word 'women' in the word. So it will come up because you searched that word.
What's the alternative? Ask google to actively suppress articles that include trans women when searching the word 'woman?' That would be discrimination.

It's so bloody depressing that the FWR board (which I hid) has started to invade everywhere else. Its nauseating. Honestly.

Sparklesocks · 14/06/2020 12:05

This thread is hilarious. Tin foil hat territory Grin

woodhill · 14/06/2020 12:09

Animal farm - Definitely Mockers. This whole situation

slashlover · 14/06/2020 12:10

What's the alternative?

Same as I learned at school 20+ years ago.

women killed in 2019 -trans

Of course there will be results for trans women in the list. They have word 'women' in the word. So it will come up because you searched that word.

Next you'll be saying people spam random words in ebay titles so they show up in more searches. How dare you use logic

DieSchottin93 · 14/06/2020 12:21

I just Googled both of those terms and I can see Churchill and his picture. Maybe they fixed it?
