WTAF - Far right protests

Poppi89 · 12/06/2020 11:18

I have just heard on the radio that far-right protesters will be out tomorrow in response to the BLM protesters. People are being urged not to be out in support of BLM tomorrow due to the aggressive nature of the far-right group and BLM protests are being cancelled because of them.

I am outraged by this. The BLM protesters are asking for people to not be killed due to the colour of their skin. They have rightly or wrongly made a decision to put themselves at risk of COVID-19 to help spread this message - a lot of people have called them idiots etc for doing this.

The far-right protests are now also protesting in large groups (but not in response to a murder) and are 'known' for being aggressive. How is this acceptable?

I would like to hear from anyone who is planning to join/agree with these far-right protests and their reasons why?

I think that anyone who isn't in exact sympathy with BLM protests is being termed far right. If a Chelsea Pensioner turned out to protect the Cenotaph, would you call them far right?

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 12/06/2020 14:39

"The far-right protests are now also protesting in large groups (but not in response to a murder) and are 'known' for being aggressive. How is this acceptable?"
Some find the current protests unacceptable.

Doesn't article 11 of The Human Rights Act allow for anyone to protest unless the protest is not peaceable? People are allowed to protest and others, with different opinions, are allowed to counter that protest.

The 'far right' may be "known" for being aggressive but you cannot assume they will be in future protests. The police will deal with any protests that get out of control.

You can't ban protests because you disagree with the beliefs expressed by those protesting. In the UK there is a right to freedom of speech.

Disclaimer: I've never attended a protest in my life.

This. ^

The ridiculous media onslaught that any person who protests and doesn't agree with BLM is racist or far right, is tiresome.

We enjoy no such right. Also, all mass protests - left or right - are currently illegal under the coronavirus legislation.

AllesAusLiebe · 12/06/2020 15:03

To be honest, I just wish that everyone would fucking stop gathering in large groups when we still haven’t managed to managed to contain the deadly pandemic. Police have better things to be doing, but instead they’ll be occupied trying to contain a handful of meatheads in central London.

It’s symptomatic of the society we live in. One group voices an opinion and it then becomes a competition as to who can shout louder.

LastTrainEast · 12/06/2020 15:07

I'm opposed to anyone grouping together in the current situation, but no you can't say "we can but they can't" That's not how it works in the real world.

If I'm reading up to date news right. The BLM protest has now been cancelled, which is a smart move by them really because it makes the counter protest pointless

theonlywayisapple · 12/06/2020 16:00

You can’t let one group protest and not the other.

Sandybval · 12/06/2020 16:00

It's acceptable because of the right to protest. Anyway it was initially to guard the cenotaph etc because the police are incompetent if last weekend is anything to go by.

BakedCam · 12/06/2020 16:01

I thought there was a protest that was moved from tomorrow to today, Flax?

I read that there had been cancellations but BBC @1pm said there was a BLM today at 2pm in Centr al London.

mrsBtheparker · 12/06/2020 16:01

aggressive nature of the far-right group

As opposed to the loving peaceful protests of the left that we've seen?

Yes I think you're right. I read in the papers that the BLM tomorrow had been cancelled but I've just switched on the news and there does seem to be a BLM protest in progress today

Xenia · 12/06/2020 16:11

Tou cannot pick and choose - either people have a right to break cv19 law and protest and they don't. BLM has had some people thinking criminal damage is fine. the other side seem to want the law respected to a greater extent.

Most people of all colours and political views however do not want statues of Churchill etc removed or defaced. We tend to unite over that so the more extreme BLM protestors as well as risking covid 19 out breaks will pretty much help those against their cause if they carry on breaking the law.

Hoppinggreen · 12/06/2020 16:12

The question is how left wing do you have to be to be allowed to protest?

Coka · 12/06/2020 16:13

So what exactly are they protesting against??? Protests? Vandalism??

Genuine question.

reinacorriendo · 12/06/2020 16:19

People also have the right to break cv-19 laws to get their fucking eyes tested so where do we draw the line?

With all protests we have the people who want to make a difference and those who turn just because it’s a jolly old time to have a fight with the police and act like a twat and probably not get caught sort of purge like situation, those that are protesting are all being tarred with the same brush because a small group of idiots ruin it because they act in a way that’s unacceptable.

Alex50 · 12/06/2020 16:22

Nobody should be protesting 😡 Our economy is fucked, we’ve been locked down for 12 weeks. What a waste of time that was if everyone is out protesting every day. Children can’t go back to school, millions of people are going to be loosing their jobs, seriously, the last thing we need is everyone protesting and then turning into riots, we won’t have a country left at this rate, we are going to pull ourselves apart 😢

flamingochill · 12/06/2020 16:24

Has anyone noticed that in the press and on social media all protesters are far left or far right ?

Alex50 · 12/06/2020 16:26

Our country is going to turn into one big war zone.

Mintjulia · 12/06/2020 16:27

Perhaps if everyone stopped protesting until we get this bloody virus sorted, and then protested peacefully rather than spray painting or tearing down council property, we wouldn’t have this problem.

People are bored and too many are spoiling for a fight. IMO All protests should be cancelled until lockdown is over

FourTeaFallOut · 12/06/2020 16:30

It's a fucking tinderbox.

Alex50 · 12/06/2020 16:31

@FourTeaFallOut I agree things are going to explode.

Glowcat · 12/06/2020 16:38

’If a Chelsea Pensioner turned out to protect the Cenotaph would you call them far right?‘

I assumed the OP meant far right ‘protestors’.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jun/11/blm-organisers-call-off-london-event-to-prevent-clashes-with-far-right

As in, people openly aligning themselves with the far right politics.

’Far-right groups, with the support of extremists such as Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who calls himself Tommy Robinson, plan to hold a “defend our memorials” event at Winston Churchill’s statue on Parliament Square, where considerable numbers could be present‘

As far as I know the Chelsea Pensioners aren’t on any watch list.

YounghillKang · 12/06/2020 16:38

The ridiculous media onslaught that any person who protests and doesn't agree with BLM is racist or far right, is tiresome.

The group planning to march is the Democratic Football Lads Alliance, fond of Nazi salutes and beloved of Tommy Robinson that famous moderate!!! Members of the group have called for Sadiq Khan to be hanged i.e. lynched. If you don’t think they’re racist or far right than how fucking far to the right must you be!

Ohdearfindingthisboringnow · 12/06/2020 16:41

I think some people wanted to protect the cenotaph etc.... that is called far right!

I am for BLM but not for destruction to the cenotaph to remember the war dead.
