My DH has bought extra loo roll as he thinks a second wave

He's just got back from Aldi and says no one was at the door monitoring how many people were going in and 'it was like lockdown was completely over'. So he decided to get a few extra loo rolls as he's certain a second wave is inevitable a lot sooner than everyone thinks.

So is he a) Completely crackers = YABU

or b) Sensible = YANBU

I prepped for no-deal Brexit, not a 'second wave'.

flirtygirl · 07/06/2020 19:03

I will start reprepping for Brexit. I always have extra food in, but I did use some due to corona.

The problem I find is that biscuits and crisps are very short dated like 4 months. Cereal the same, I could swear before cereal would be 9 months or a year.

I would love to find a way to store flour without getting weevils. I no longer store any extra flour so ran out end of March and only mugged to get bread flour last week. Still not seen sr Flour or plain flour in any of the 6 stores I go to.

I'd like to have a year's stash of food but will probably just double what I have. I do so to protect against price increases as much as anything else.

flirtygirl · 07/06/2020 19:06

I've noticed tinned tomatoes having 2 to 3 years date so I will buy as many as I can stash. It's the basis for lots of my cooking and I won't be using them again if we end up getting maggoty ones like sold in the USA.

I'd rather go without or change to fresh tomatoes but I wouldn't be able to make the same quantities of sauces for batch cooking and my shopping bill would go up.

Laaalaaaa · 07/06/2020 19:08

Sensible - if it were to happen again, at least he’s sorted for toilet roll and didn’t panic buy at the same time everybody else will. Having not been able to buy pasta or things like chopped tomatoes for ages I'm buying more regularly so we don’t run out again but I wouldn’t call it panic buying.

ChavvySexPond · 07/06/2020 19:26

Online delivery
Loadsa slots now
If get busy again they’ll prioritise those T&T isolators

You might want to ask someone shielding how they got on with that. It took three weeks for my parents to get one. Mum says she's turned into my Nan, and will never not have well stocked cupboards ever again.

Being a panic buyer is kind of embarrassing and spreading the virus when you can't get an online delivery is very bad form.

schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 19:29

"Being a panic buyer is kind of embarrassing and spreading the virus when you can't get an online delivery is very bad form."

Who is panic buying and/or spreading viruses? Confused

userxx · 07/06/2020 19:31

Yeah I didn't understand that either 🧐

Pipandmum · 07/06/2020 19:38

Agree @Dogsaresomucheasier.

zingally · 07/06/2020 19:39

I do think there will be a second wave, but it won't be as big as the first. I also think we'll be left to our own devices, and no serious lock down. It'll be "lock down if you want" or "take your chances if you want".

That being said, people thought there would be a new surge after the VE day celebrations, but that didn't happen.

OP, I don't think your DH was unreasonable to buy a bit extra. I suspect most people will in the next week or so. Especially if these protests continue.

Sweettea1 · 07/06/2020 19:58

What's with the extra toliet roll am confused? Is there gold or something hidden in the packs that I don't know about?

Littlemeadow123 · 07/06/2020 20:03

I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping an extra pack or two in the house as a 2nd wave isn't impossible. If you end up with 100+ toilet rolls though then he is being unreasonable.

schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 20:50

"What's with the extra toliet roll am confused? Is there gold or something hidden in the packs that I don't know about?" Were you under a rock when the shelves became empty of toilet rolls a few weeks ago thanks to panic buyers?

I doubt there's any gold in there but by sensibly prepping OPs husband has avoided ever having to do that

Crunchymum · 07/06/2020 21:02

Given all supermarkets have implemented social distancing, we cannot logistically see the same level of panic buying that we saw a few months ago?

flabbyflabbyflabguts · 07/06/2020 21:07

Very odd
I've bought vodka and gin

greathat · 07/06/2020 22:39

Buying 4 packs is shit value. I always buy 9. Sometimes 2 packs of 9 when they're on multi buy

schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 23:09

@greathat why not buy a pack of 18 or 24? I don't understand anyone who buys a 4 pack

CherryValanc · 07/06/2020 23:18

If he went in dressed in combat gear with samari sword drawn, I suggest having a word about prospective.

Otherwise, what's the harm?

LimitIsUp · 07/06/2020 23:28

"Can your "NHS friends" give me next Friday's euromillions numbers please"

What an absolutely facile remark SockYarn - but as NHS professionals, scientists and epidemiologists they do know a bit about Covid

Dovefeather · 07/06/2020 23:31

I’ve been maintaining a small stockpile of around 24 in case there is ever a shortage again.

schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 23:42

@LimitIsUp really? The vast vast majority of NHS workers have no more of an idea about when we might get a second wave that the next person. I refer you to the example of my friend and many others like her.

SIL is an A&E nurse. She predicts many things that don't happen. She doesn't have a clue and admits she just gets carried away gossiping Grin

Swiftsseason · 07/06/2020 23:50

Wow, vicious response from some over.... The grand total of 4 loo rolls panic buy Grin

Op I think he's wise.
I don't think we will see shelves cleared again, supermarket already have limits on some products which is fantastic.
They know what they are doing and will also be well prepared for brexit.

Winter does concern me, and I will be gently.. Restoring loo roll back up.
I used to buy my favourite on ocado on offer and it's stopped now! So my usual comfort wall has gone.

I think if anyone can esp with children... Just get an extra bag of pasta when shopping, one extra can... I think everyone should have two weeks worth of stocks... I appreciate its not easy but very little occasionally does add up.

LimitIsUp · 07/06/2020 23:51

One of my friends is a research scientist at Southampton University closely involved in Covid research, another a public health specialist, another has a senior coordinating role for Covid - so not quite the same as your SIL

schoolsoutforcovid · 08/06/2020 00:03

NHS top trumps.

I take your public health scientist and raise you my scientist aunt in oxford working on the vaccine Grin

And you've totally missed the point.....

LimitIsUp · 08/06/2020 00:09

I think I have - what is your point?
