AIBU?

My DH has bought extra loo roll as he thinks a second wave

He's just got back from Aldi and says no one was at the door monitoring how many people were going in and 'it was like lockdown was completely over'. So he decided to get a few extra loo rolls as he's certain a second wave is inevitable a lot sooner than everyone thinks.

So is he a) Completely crackers = YABU

or b) Sensible = YANBU

@recycledteenager24 Smile You're right - he bought 9 loo rolls instead of 4 - And yup I realise this is not bulk buying.

But yes - we were chatting when he came back from the shop and wondering if this second wave thing was gonna happen.

It wasn't really that serious a thread - somewhat silly.

If I did need to bulk buy it would definitely be for red wine and real coffee.

Quite possibly if you read up on Spanish flu.

Only if I find I'm suffering badly from insomnia.

Seems to me people are desperate for this to happen so they can just say "I told you so".

Hopefully people will have realised that panic buying was completely unnecessary the first time so won't do it again!

Home delivery works well??? Not here it didn't, even after lockdown was lifted (not uk). Couldn't get a slot for weeks even click and collect. Doing click and collect now and things are missing every time.

There will be a second wave. Just look at the protests.

Aren't people getting bored banging on about all this?
I'm neither enthralled nor bored by it I just accept it's likely to happen.

I'm not so sure about the protests causing a second wave. It didn't really happen with the VE day celebrations; also there is much less spread of the virus in the open air, and its survival rate is much less when the weather is hot.

Very sensible. It is something you will use up anyway even if there is no second wave so absolutely no harm in buying extra.

We didn't stock up too much pre Covid and had to self isolate right at the start and it was a massive pain. There were no delivery slots and when we got out of isolation the shops had supply issues. We have slowly stocked up over the weeks since so our cupboards and freezer are full and we will have plenty for any future self isolations.

A)

A second wave will most likely come but there’s no need to stock up on toilet roll, I still don’t understand why people bought so munch.

We are a family of four and still have two left out of a 24pk we purchased a week before lockdown started.

Surprised that so many PPs still don't know what panic buying is Hmm

Oh FFS, here we go. So what's after the 2nd wave, the 3rd, 4th, 5th?

Yes, we all have to stay in for the rest of our miserable fucking lives. Why would you even need to ask 🤷‍♂️

All you need is a stock of two weeks supply of long life or frozen food and other basics in case your family become ill with covid and are unable to get to the shops. Very few people appear to have caught covid going to the supermarket.

I think that if there is a second wave during summer most people will be at less risk of serious illness as those who have been exercising outdoors or even sunbathing will have boosted their vitamin d levels. It is also less likely that one would pick it up in the summer when it is easier to do outdoor activities.

I think eating healthily, regular moderate exercise and staying within a healthy BMI range are the best ways to prepare for a possible second wave.

At least it will get used, it was confusing when people were stocking up on loads of fresh stuff, plenty of which inevitably was wasted.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 07/06/2020 16:47

The stocking up of loo roll wasn't necessary the first time around, can't imagine it will again.

"a few extra"

is obviously OK.

Supply is now adequate and a lot of people with stockpiles will be using them up.

I'd say it is normal to have at least a couple of weeks worth

Now is a reasonable time to check that you have adequate supplies.

I was most impressed, considering how many people were off work, that the organisations essential to our society - post, water, electricity, banks, phones, police, supermarkets - kept running.

If things had crashed, the results could have been much more damaging that the disease.

So he bought a 9 pack?
That is just sensible to me in any circumstances. But then I buy my toilet roll from Who Gives a Crap and get 40 at a time.

Just double checking, my DIY list is reducing and I just wanted to see if I need to add any more punishment to this list.

Well that's the hall stairs and landing being papered then. Looks like a new bathroom after that (to use up my stockpiled bog roll).

We brought another pack of 24 when we still had around 14 in the last but only because my mum doesn't like the thin stuff in the old pack!

I did a few things earlier than I would have i.e when we still had enough for 1-2 meals rather than none left.

Mine is a bit of thinking about if we have to isolate for 1-2 weeks and if another wave comes and everyone panics.

Notnownotneverever · 07/06/2020 16:55

Your DP is not wrong to think there may well be a second wave. People's behaviour will be the cause of this.

I think you and your DP missed the point regarding pointless stockpiling the first time though. If people didn't stock pile there would be no need for anyone to buy any extra of anything at all. We would have all had exactly what we needed when we needed it.

i think the second wave will be in the autumn but i am also worried about Christmas and therefore January

I didn’t panic buy just bought the usual and we still have some. Joke with the builder I am checking he isn’t swiping some as he is doing the bathroom.

I do think there will be a second wave due to the wispy washy rules. I think it would have been better to have had a distance or at very least stay in your own county. Instead people have flocked to the beaches and the Lakes and Dales probably the Peak District too. Then this weekend protest marches and hardly anyone one with masks and lots of people not keeping the two metre rule.

Then there are the people who have never bothered to keep the rules in the first place glaring at someone near here and their friends.

So B if he had bought a massive couple of bags full like some people on here were doing before lockdown I would have said A. I often have an extra packet of nine as we live a bit from any shops and it is there in case of tummy trouble or bad weather as it floods and we can’t get to the shops sometimes. I have been known to give some to others in need.

I agree with those saying the shortages - of food and many other things - are going to happen when we crash out of the EU without a deal.

We're gradually re-stocking our Brexit stores, which have helped us avoid going to the shops during the lockdown.
