My DH has bought extra loo roll as he thinks a second wave

He's just got back from Aldi and says no one was at the door monitoring how many people were going in and 'it was like lockdown was completely over'. So he decided to get a few extra loo rolls as he's certain a second wave is inevitable a lot sooner than everyone thinks.

So is he a) Completely crackers = YABU

or b) Sensible = YANBU

"My NHS friends are predicting a second wave for October."

My point is they have virtually nothing to base this "prediction" on. And that my SIL admits her bullshit predictions are just gossip (despite her being much more lowly and out of the loop than your friends at Southampton).

My Aunt doesn't make any predictions as she's quite honest in saying "there are too many variables and possibilities, that at the moment we just don't know".

Sicktaethebackyeeth · 08/06/2020 07:14

Well if there isn’t a second wave considering the thousands crammed together then surely we can scrap social distancing?

Fifthtimelucky · 08/06/2020 07:39

I've always been a bit of a hoarder which was helpful earlier this year as I didn't need to buy any loo roll, soap, pasta, rice and tinned tomatoes at a time when they weren't available in the shops.

Having depleted my supplies a bit, I am now restocking. Yesterday I defrosted my very ancient and previously all iced up 'overflow' freezer, so now I will start to restock that too.

schoolsoutforcovid · 08/06/2020 10:30

"Well if there isn’t a second wave considering the thousands crammed together then surely we can scrap social distancing?"

Not really. They are not even nearly a majority of the population.

TrixieMixie · 08/06/2020 17:43

There probably will be a second wave but there's no need for the stupid loo roll nonsense all over again. There was no need for it the first time. It's worth keeping a small stockpile of food in case you need to self-isolate and that's it.

jackie2669 · 08/06/2020 18:02

Totally reasonable. If we all start with the extra few rolls ..the extra tin etc .I have no panic buying but the odd few things then if it does hit will be able to deliver a few things to the vulnerable so they don't have to go out and I'm not trying to battle the stampede of idiots in shop.

Bizawit · 08/06/2020 18:18

Crackers. Even if there is a second wave, how exactly is loo roll going to help?! It’s people like your husband who’ve made this situation so much worse than it ever needed to be.

Rachel1874 · 08/06/2020 18:20

Why toilet roll though? And that probably was the second wave. The first hit in december/january.

cakeandchampagne · 08/06/2020 18:28

Maybe we actually need food/supplies for 2 weeks multiplied by the number of people in the home?

GinWithRosie · 08/06/2020 19:01

Seriously? By anyone’s standards, you can hardly call buying a 9-pack bulk buying 🙄

I live on my own and buy 9-packs regularly ...it’s just cost efficient, surely? 4 would only last a week the way I use them 😂 And I have 3 toilets, which I think is pretty standard these days (downstairs/main bathroom/en-suite). You need to keep plenty in each 🤷‍♀️

niugboo · 08/06/2020 20:36

The biggest problem we had this lockdown was selfish people stockpiling. Congratulations on being married to park of the problem.

SpiritEssence · 08/06/2020 20:46

From someone who works in a supermarket I hope people dont. I dont think myself or my colleagues could go through all that mayhem again and the abuse we got.

Barney60 · 08/06/2020 20:52

After all the crowds yesterday protesting, plus idiots that think law doesn't apply to them, id say 2nd wave is definite.

MulticolourMophead · 08/06/2020 20:53

I've got 5 rolls left in the cupboard, we don't use it up at a fast rate. So, today I bought one of the jumbo sized 24 packs. This will last us for weeks, there's only 3 of us. So not stockpiling, just buying slightly ahead of my usual timetable.

Lovely13 · 08/06/2020 22:37

Oh my giddy aunt. This obsession with loo roll and pasta. There was always enough to go round unless nutters didn’t buy ten billion packets of them. Just stop it. Also with the flour. Are you seriously going to use it all? Or land waste....

SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere · 08/06/2020 23:04

YABU! You didn't need to stockpile the first time around! Just selfish and ignorance that causes panic buying!

NerrSnerr · 09/06/2020 09:12

@SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere He bought a 9 pack instead of a 4 pack. Isn't that just sensible just in case they need to self isolate for a fortnight? He didn't fill his trolly with toilet roll, just bought 5 extra.

Bizawit · 09/06/2020 09:42

@NerrSnerr what caused the shortages the first time was millions of people just bying 'one or two' extra of items than they would normally. It adds up to a lot of extra demand quite quickly. Only a few people were literally filling up trolly loads, that wasn't the problem. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0886bhr listen from about 16 and a half minutes.

Ethelfleda · 09/06/2020 09:49

I literally did not change my shopping patterns at all at the start of lock down - no panic buying, no ‘buying just a few extra’ (what’s the fucking difference??) and has absolutely no problems at all. If nobody panic buys then nobody else needs to.

NerrSnerr · 09/06/2020 09:52

@Bizawit so what's the alternative then? Prior to Covid we would do a big shop every fortnight and do top up shops on top of that. If you need to isolate for 2 weeks you can't do that.

We didn't panic buy at all. We just shopped as normal and then had to isolate as a family for a fortnight in March. All the delivery slots were full up and we were too exhausted dealing with two poorly children to be in queues at midnight for slots. I bloody wish we'd stocked up a little bit more as it would have taken some of the pressure off.

Pleasenodont · 09/06/2020 09:53

If people didn’t bulk buy last time there never would have been a shortage and everyone would have had everything they needed. Selfish bulk buyers were the problem, we didn’t have a nationwide stock issue at all.

Eckhart · 09/06/2020 10:33

@Ethelfleda

If nobody panic buys then nobody else needs to

How do you know? Shops suddenly had higher demand (because the hospitality industry suddenly had lower demand) with no warning. They didn't have chance to change their stock levels, so the shelves emptied. I'm not saying that some panic buying didn't play a part, but there are other reasons for the shelves being bare. And it's all very well saying 'Don't panic buy!' when you need something, are in the 4th shop (because the 1st 3 had run out), and there's only 2 of your item left. And you're meant to be shopping as infrequently and briefly as possible.

So many factors. It's not as simple as 'If I don't panic buy, you don't have to either.'

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2020 11:54

Same here. And it was fine, there was still stuff available. Might not have been the exact same stuff as before but it was fine.
Juliet2014 · 09/06/2020 12:06

Same here

Never without. Wonderful fresh produce, toilet rolls etc.

It’s been a pleasure to shop actually, Marks and Waitrose. And occasionally Sainsburys (but always queue there)

nibdedibble · 09/06/2020 12:10

We've just been discussing clearing some space in the storeroom to stock up. Coronavirus maybe; no-deal Brexit will hammer us in terms of imports so yeah, going to buy a ton of pasta and I do not care who laughs at that Smile Last Brexit prep lasted us nicely over the panic-buying period so we had no need to. Nothing will go to waste.
