My DH has bought extra loo roll as he thinks a second wave

He's just got back from Aldi and says no one was at the door monitoring how many people were going in and 'it was like lockdown was completely over'. So he decided to get a few extra loo rolls as he's certain a second wave is inevitable a lot sooner than everyone thinks.

So is he a) Completely crackers = YABU

or b) Sensible = YANBU

meant lockdown, waves will likely occur but there won't be another lockdown like this.

Spacepocket · 07/06/2020 15:31

Threads like this are the very reason that idiotic panic buying escalates.

vanillandhoney · 07/06/2020 15:31

I think he's being sensible, but I doubt we'll lockdown again. Too much damage has been done to the economy already.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 07/06/2020 15:31

Do you think panic buyers would actually target loo roll again though? Surely after doing it once they may have realised that it was a bit overkill/unnecessary and that they needed other items more. Some are probably still working their way through their stash from March.

dooble · 07/06/2020 15:31

* Panic buying is stupid and what causes the supply chain issues.**
*
Buying an extra few toilet rolls in a pack or couple of extra tins of food each time you go shopping is useful. It means that the shops can keep up with demand.

I never get this argument, surely if tmw 20 million people start buying a little extra that equals stock shortages ?

SunshineCake · 07/06/2020 15:33

B. Any sensible bulk shopping limits how often one has to go out therefore lowering the risk.

TimeWastingButFun · 07/06/2020 15:34

Crackers. There are things to do in lockdown beside sitting on the toilet.

iklboo · 07/06/2020 15:34

A for definite.

viques · 07/06/2020 15:35

I went shopping for only the second time since lockdown yesterday. The first time I went it was queue at the door, all the staff wore masks and gloves, markings on the floor for distancing. Most customers wearing face coverings. People shopping on their own. Shop was relatively quiet (older person shopping hour). Felt strange but safe.

I couldn't go out on Friday because I was waiting in for a delivery, thanks Hermes who didn't turn up. So I foolishly went yesterday to
the same shop. [big Sainsbury]. No queues at the door, everyone walked straight in ignoring the sanitiser to squirt on the trolley, no staff at all wearing PPE, shop filled with family groups and people shopping together so aisles very crowded , markings on the floor all worn away, very few people wearing masks/gloves. The only things left to show were the barriers at the checkout. Apart from that it was like a pre Covid Saturday.

Clearly lockdown is over.

recycledteenager24 · 07/06/2020 15:36

op did he buy 9 actual loo rolls or 9 packets ? i read it as 9 actual rolls, and some people seemto think you are stockpiling !

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/06/2020 15:37

He’s not wrong about the second wave but I don’t understand the obsession with loo rolls......

JustC · 07/06/2020 15:39

Completly crackers, just like the people overstocking it in first wave so to say. There really was/is no need for that much loo roll. Or that much soap, pasta and so on. If people had bought normally stocks would have kept up normally.

Rubyroost · 07/06/2020 15:42

Wtf to people saying sensible. The second wave will not lead to people needing keore toilet roll. The shortage came from idiots like your husband buying it, not from needing it.

puffinkoala · 07/06/2020 15:42

I'm not worried about a second wave, but I will be replenishing my Brexit stockpile as and when I can.

recycledteenager24 · 07/06/2020 15:44

ffs i wish op would answer my fucking question and clear this up !

GreyGardens88 · 07/06/2020 15:45

Why loo roll? I've never ever understood this

LudaMusser · 07/06/2020 15:47

Here we go, again

OldLace · 07/06/2020 15:47

I'm buying 1 or 2 extra of everything I can afford gradually between now and Christmas. I am rural so do this pre-winter anyway but will do extra this year as I am 20miles from a supermarket and it is sensible for me.

Then if there is a '2nd / 3rd wave' / Brexit shambles (likely, given the shambles over this) I will be prepared and not affecting others.

GreyGardens88 · 07/06/2020 15:48

I got through the first wave without panic buying, stockpiling or buying more than I needed. If everyone had been like me the whole situation would have been much more bearable. So no I'm definitely not going to start now.

BlueJava · 07/06/2020 15:48

If he wants extra loo roll then... whatever makes him happy. I don't think he'll need it but frankly I was under-prepared for lockdown and ended up scrabbling round trying to find local suppliers for food as Tescos look like a plague of locusts swept through.

Horehound · 07/06/2020 15:49

Omg people really are thick as mince!

TatianaBis · 07/06/2020 15:50

There may well be a second wave but it may not be until the autumn by which time you will have run out of loo roll.

SistemaAddict · 07/06/2020 15:51

I'm a prepper also building up my stash so I say he's being sensible. No such thing as too much loo roll with brexit and covid. Slowly building up a good supply is a good idea.

Hagisonthehill · 07/06/2020 15:52

I went shopping today. There are while family groups and there has been a steady increase of people only buying one or two items.
This means at normally quiet times I am queuing again.Still apart from yeast everything is available.

GrandAltogetherSo · 07/06/2020 15:53

I live rurally and permanently have at least 2 months supply of basic food and sundry items, inc. loo rolls, just in case. We keep hens and grow some vegetables so whilst not self sufficient, we could manage ok for a bit.

We often lose the electricity in the winter for a few days following a bad storm so I’m never unprepared. Yesterday we lost water for a few hours due to a burst water main several miles away so I used some of my bottled water supplies.

However, if you live in a large town or city, you don’t really need 2 months worth of provisions, maybe more like 2 weeks?

I do agree with your DH. Looking at people meeting up in large groups and not being careful anymore, I think they’ll be a bit of a lull over the summer and come the Autumn, we’ll have a second serious wave around October to coincide with the usual winter cold & flu bugs. Sad
