I really like Meghan Markle and I admire her for carving her own way and being a feminist in her choices. I like that she waited after the birth for photos and spoke up about the metoo movement etc.

As much as I like Duchess of Cambridge, I don’t think she does anything to advance women. She seems to do what is expected of her which people love but which I find awful. She has a responsibility as a role model for young women but yet Seems to be the perfect, painfully thin, upper class wife that does as she is told, rarely speaks and is every sexist, wealthy, white man’s dream.

I’m a little lost as to why people seem to be pro Kate and anti Meghan. Is it because Kate is what all middle class women aspire to be in England. Doing as one is told ? Being a softly spoken English lady that wears tweed and frolics in the country while her husband is on a boys ski trip etc etc

Have we all forgot about feminism ?

I literally have no idea what part of the UK you live in but where is a 80% mixed community. I myself am not white or of British heritage (although second generation and born here) and I know many many people who don’t admire Meghan, it’s not because of the colour of her skin.

It’s not always about her race, that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been racism. Or are you denying that there has ever been racism directed against her? Not even in how suddenly Kate became an ‘English Rose’ in media descriptions since Meghan came along?

At risk of being a pedant @MarieIVanArkleStinks you are simply wrong about Elizabeth I. There was no compelling precedent that would suggest that Elizabeth I’s husband would become king.

Mary I agreed that Philip of Spain would be joint ruler because she was desperate for a Spanish Catholic alliance. Elizabeth I had no such religious zealotry that would cause her to surrender her sovereignty. Moreover it was a deeply unpopular step - Wyatts rebellion? Mary Queen of Scots (a separate country and judicial system so not really relevant), did agree to share power (but not a claim to the throne). However she was then likely complicit in murdering her husband when he became inconvenient. So questionable how much real power Darnley actually had.

Either way, one example of a Queen making her husband king does not automatically mean that Elizabeth I’s husband would automatically become king over her head. Especially not considering the education, intellect and will of that Queen.

Re Victoria, you dismissed her reign saying that she did nothing without her husband’s approval. I was merely pointing out that he was dead for 40 of her 63 year reign. So his influence was necessary limited. It is demeaning (and wrong) to try to reduce her long reign to playing the little wife.

To be honest your flailing attempts to minimise the achievements of female rulers seems unbelievably sexist to me.

Of course the Queen just smiles and wears nice clothes. She doesn’t have weekly meetings with the PM, isn’t head of the Cof E, doesn’t go through a ton of paperwork daily to keep her abreast of current affairs, meet other Heads of State, host functions for the worthy...

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect

A) not to be lied about
B) not to be criticised for exactly the same things Kate (and others) were lauded for or were not covered.
C) not to be mercilessly pulled about for heinous crimes like bump touching, wearing tights and eating avocados,

I'm not a fan of the Royals at all but I find the over analysis of every move MM makes by the obsessives on MN quite bizarre. It's not healthy.

I’m not vehemently denying racism, read my posts again.
I said not everyone who dislikes her is racist and I also said people dislike her for a multitude of reasons including her’s and her husband’s behaviour, their press statements, their overt hypocrisy on a lot of issues that they court press for etc.

I personally think the pair of them have behaved like a naive pair of tits, much like when teenagers think they no better than their parents and make fools of themselves.

Fuck off it does. The comments about MM and the threads deleted over the last couple of years have been utterly disgusting about her. It’s a shame in a way, as at least then there would be clear evidence about the racism I’ve been alluding to over the thread.

I don't ’love’ Meghan, but I despise the level of hatred and next-level looney toons behaviour towards her over the ideas the media have put in people’s heads. No one knows her personally here, absolutely no one knows if she really is a diva or attention seeking. Perhaps she is, but she is one of many celebs that would come under that bracket. None of them have endless threads started about them, insisting on repeating the same crap a poster has read in a rag, anyone from a staunch republican to a batshit royalist fuming about how she’s insulted the royals in some way. The way people talk about her, you’d think she kicked every corgi in Buckingham palace and personally shat in the Queen’s handbag. It’s utterly bizarre behaviour, especially from those who talk about her like they’ve been personally insulted by her apparent behaviour.
