To think no one is stockpiling fucking aubergines

I know it’s not a big deal. But we’re shielding DD so getting food deliveries and it’s such a pain in the arse only being able to order 3 of anything.

I understand for high demand items it might be necessary to limit items but surely some common sense should be applied?

Yep. Slimy purple black weirdness that they are.

Do you reckon we could make a decent cocktail from one? I don't think so.

Fredthedoggie · 25/04/2020 16:58

They are imported. usually a lorry coming form Europe has 2 drivers and they take shifts to meet the driving hours commitment. Now due to social distancing there is 1 driver. The driver has to rest- the delivery time is increased- less can be delivered- hence the shortage.

We dont grow a lot of aubergines in the UK.

ScarfLadysBag · 25/04/2020 16:59

We didn't get any with our latest order Sad so someone is buying them!

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 17:00

I make an awesome aubergine lasagna that needs 4 and a burnt aubergine chilli. They’re so good. You just need to find the right recipe.

I am hoarding two in my fridge. Except I might eat them tonight!

aintnothinbutagstring · 25/04/2020 17:03

YANBU aubergines would be the very last things I'd stockpile.

GiveMeStrengthOrAHobby · 25/04/2020 17:05

Aubergines are the scurge of mankind and are mislabelled as foodstuff, no idea why anyone would be buying them let alone stockpiling them. So yanbu

Sorry if my post offends the aubergine-a-philes among you...

Ditheringdooley · 25/04/2020 17:10

Keep getting aubergines in our oddbox delivery- so they are surplus somewhere!

CountFosco · 25/04/2020 17:12

Oh, haven't aubergine in ages. Annoyingly DH is just back from the supermarket so none for a week now!

I'm getting annoyed by the '3 packets' rule. 3x500g bags of pasta is just 3 meals for our household. A household of 1 will get a weeks worth of pasta (assuming eating pasta at every meal) if they buy 3x500g. So we have to go to the supermarket more often to buy our usual weekly amount. It's daft.

BikeRunSki · 25/04/2020 17:12

ScarfLady maybe you didn’t get any because the supermarket didn’t have any?

kitk · 25/04/2020 17:14

Burnt aubergine chilli- any chance of a recipe? Sorry to not be helpful but it sounds delish x

Obviouspretzel · 25/04/2020 17:14

Well, you could just not eat pasta for every meal? Maybe accept that 3 packs is a fair amount and that other people might want to be able to get hold of some pasta? How many packs would you like to buy?

ScarfLadysBag · 25/04/2020 17:14

That's what I mean! They were in stock when I ordered but sold out by the time my order arrived, so people are buying them! Maybe not stockpiling though, but it makes sense if there are lower supplies of them than usual. I've never had an aubergine not arrive before Grin

WickedlyPetite · 25/04/2020 17:15

Can you post the burnt aubergine chilli recipe please!

Teacher12345 · 25/04/2020 17:15

Well, I wouldn't have expected people to stockpile raisins but they are all ot of stock for some reason Hmm.

MashedSpud · 25/04/2020 17:16

I hope I get mine in my order. I love aubergine fritters.

Ninkanink · 25/04/2020 17:16

Mmmmmm aubergine...

I bought three in our last shop but that’s not really stockpiling is it!

I’m going to make such deliciousness with the two I’ve got left; cannot wait!

ListeningQuietly · 25/04/2020 17:18

LOVE Aubergines !

Do have a look at some of the online food stores who normally deliver to pubs and restaurants - they are doing some cracking deals at the moment on BIG bags of stuff
(eg 3kg bags of pasta and 4 litre tubs of icecream)

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 17:18

kitk this is the recipe, it’s DELICIOUS. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/burnt-aubergine-veggie-chilli

In all my 6 decades, I have never purchased an aubergine.

SerendipitySunshine · 25/04/2020 17:19

How often do you want to eat pasta?

PigletJohn · 25/04/2020 17:23

You could try growing them. They're supposed to grow like a tomato but need warmer conditions. I tried it once but only got one fruit. Maybe if you have a greenhouse?

Tr1skel1on · 25/04/2020 17:24

That burnt aubergine chilli recipe looks amazing! Thank you.

Although you have just increased the chance of there being a shortage now ;)

bluebeck · 25/04/2020 17:24

Discustin' OP - YUCK!
