To think no one is stockpiling fucking aubergines

I know it’s not a big deal. But we’re shielding DD so getting food deliveries and it’s such a pain in the arse only being able to order 3 of anything.

I understand for high demand items it might be necessary to limit items but surely some common sense should be applied?

OP, I am in central Scotland - can I drop you off some aubergines next Friday when I go to Lidl?

66redballons · 25/04/2020 23:00

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g. Microwave to soften, brush with little oil. They are not such greedy sponges once softened in microwave.

Q1w2e3 · 25/04/2020 23:05

Love the look of that recipe - thank you. Hope I can find an aubergine.
There’s a baby corn and green pepper shortage where I am.

RainMustFall · 25/04/2020 23:07

No thank you to aubergines. What I'm more upset about, and I realise this is a first world problem and I won't die without it, is that Pimms has disappeared off the face of the earth. No shops have it in stock and in desperation I checked Amazon. Yay they had Pimms - in a wooden crate with a poncy crystal glass for nearly £60 plus £5 postage. No thanks. Anyone prepared to own up to stockpiling Pimms?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 25/04/2020 23:08

I couldn't get any today either - but I guess they mostly come from Spain? I've been expecting more veg shortages for a while to be honest, we import loads from Spain. Peppers are the only veg ASD DS eats so I'm really hoping they don't run short of those.

We use the Jamie Oliver 5 ingredient recipe for aubergine pasta sauce, he boils the aubergines before frying them!!! I was not convinced, but it works.

AmelieTaylor · 25/04/2020 23:13

I got a Tesco delivery the other day. I'd ordered 2 assuming they'd be like the ones previously, you know 2 decent ones. These arrived no bigger than pears...too small to do anything with 🙄 still got most other things, so I was very grateful for the order as a whole

Stillfunny · 25/04/2020 23:17

What the hell are you all going on about ? You mean EGGPLANT !? 🍆🍆😜

rottiemum88 · 25/04/2020 23:18

Eugh... can't stomach an aubergine these days. DH was posted out in Istanbul during his army days and I spent 8 months flying back and forth fairly regularly with a Turkish Airlines to visit. Every. Single. Sodding. Meal was a goddamn aubergine extravaganza. Haven't been able to stomach them since Grin

KatherineJaneway · 25/04/2020 23:28

None of the modern varieties need salting

Yes, now all the bitterness has been bred out of them. When I last properly used them, you had to salt them.

I made a layered involtini for us & my DM

Never heard of involtini, I'll take a look.

Sexnotgender · 26/04/2020 06:48

@TooMinty thank you that’s such a kind offer. I’ve got some (hopefully) coming in my Morrison’s order tomorrow though.

TooMinty · 26/04/2020 09:39

Ok, fingers crossed they arrive in your delivery Smile

BogRollBOGOF · 26/04/2020 09:52

There were aubergines on my last supermarket trip. For a moment I was tempted by the word "moussaka" but then I remembered the last time I made it, DS had a meltdown just because he could see aubergine on the top. He never even had any on his plate let alone being asked to try a bite Hmm

Jux · 26/04/2020 12:25

I love aubergine. DH won't touch it though.

I'm going to try that chili.
Which recipe for the curry though?

ListeningQuietly · 26/04/2020 18:05

there is a belting aubergine and chickpea curry that turned up on the diet threads regularly
its lush

stillfunny
But we eat courgettes rather than zucchini
and coriander rather than cilantro
and basil rather that b-a-a-a--y-sil Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/04/2020 18:07

... and tomahtoes, not tomaytoes! Grin

Also, we use the logical system of weighing ingredients, not measuring them out by volume. Never got my head round that one.

NoKnit · 26/04/2020 18:20

@Fredthedoggie

They are imported. usually a lorry coming form Europe has 2 drivers and they take shifts to meet the driving hours commitment. Now due to social distancing there is 1 driver. The driver has to rest- the delivery time is increased- less can be delivered- hence the shortage.

That has cracked me up no end. As far as I'm aware aubergines are imported from Asia, say China and India so I doubt they'd be coming on a lorry from Europe but who knows. I'm also pretty certain any said lorries coming from Europe (mainland) actually don't have 2 drivers rather they just rest and have their breaks when they are due. But you really do read all sorts of confident classics on mumsnet who think they know it all. I think this one so far has taken the biscuit for me

Madcats · 26/04/2020 18:28

I am with NoKnit's theory on this one. Farming Today has been banging on about logistics from mainland Europe (drivers) and Africa/Asia (no tourist planes) for a fortnight or so.

We need to learn to love root veg for a few months.

ListeningQuietly · 26/04/2020 19:33

NoKnit
Aubrgines are grown in Spain and Italy in HUGE Polytunnels
Look at the source data on the boxes in the shop

Chillipeanuts · 26/04/2020 20:30

GlomofNit

I know everyone is wound up just now, but I did wonder 😁
No worries.

I can assure you that our drivers are arriving solo from the EU

What line of haulage are you in?

LittleFoxKit · 26/04/2020 23:10

What's the texture of aubergine chili like?
I'm autistic and really funny with textures (and taste but learning to cope with new flavours), but trying to find other food stuffs I can use to reduce the amount of meat we eat as it gets soooooo expensive Confused

Honestly think my mother is thanking the gods(!) that this pandemic is happening now and not 10+ years ago, otherwise I would have starved as I literally only ate plain pasta (sometimes if feeling adventurous I would put some butter or cheese on it, or I was really feeling out there I'd agree to bolagnase long as it was just mince and sauce without vegetable textures).

LittleFoxKit · 26/04/2020 23:12

coriander rather than cilantro

I always wondered what cilantro was Grin

Sexnotgender · 27/04/2020 07:12

LittleFoxKit the aubergine chilli is quite a fine texture. All the vegetables are chopped really small and you can cut the aubergine as small as you want. It’s cooked for about 2 hours all in so everything ends up very soft.

We had the aubergine chilli last night, it was delicious. Thanks for the recommendation! Everyone enjoyed it, even dedicated carnivore DH.

missclimpson · 28/04/2020 17:32

We grow them quite successfully; last year was a bumper year. We freeze them in ratatouille, caponata and also riste d'aubergine which Is delicious. I love aubergines.
