To think no one is stockpiling fucking aubergines

I know it’s not a big deal. But we’re shielding DD so getting food deliveries and it’s such a pain in the arse only being able to order 3 of anything.

I understand for high demand items it might be necessary to limit items but surely some common sense should be applied?

@TheLightGetsln We are having a shortage in my area of the States. Those and Sprouts

Corna · 25/04/2020 18:19

My bloody husband is the culprit! He buys the fuckers to make baba ganoush out of. Leaves the oven all day to roast them then forgets about it. We eventually have them sitting in the fridge looking all shrivelled and judgy, until he stealthily bins them and hopes I won't notice. Sorry. He's also responsible for the rice shortage as he can't get his head around the idea that rice expands so cooks kilos of he stuff 'for tomorrow ' which never comes.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 25/04/2020 18:19

I'm sorry, it was me. I need large quantities of baba ganoush with every meal.

TroysMammy · 25/04/2020 18:20

I buy them when on offer, slice and open freeze and when my tomatoes and courgettes have grown I make Mediterranean chutney.

I bought on the other day but had a telling off from my DP because it's a greenhouse plant grown in Spain. After reading about plastic and slave labour in Almeria I really shouldn't have bought it.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 25/04/2020 18:20

You might be able to get some on the black vegetable market.

CountFosco · 25/04/2020 18:21

Well, you could just not eat pasta for every meal? Maybe accept that 3 packs is a fair amount and that other people might want to be able to get hold of some pasta? How many packs would you like to buy?

We don't have pasta every day never mind every meal (I said a single household would need to eat pasta at every meal before they would need 3 packets not that we ate pasta every meal). Surely it's obvious that a large household is going to need more food than a single person household? Particularly now we are eating all meals at home. If they are going to ration food they need to take into account household size, otherwise large households are going to have to shop more often.

how much pasta do you have per person?

3-4oz. Depends on the meal and how substantial the sauce is.

Treaclepie19 · 25/04/2020 18:22

Aubergine is one of the few vegetables I don't like so it's definitely not me 😂

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 18:22

Honestly jacobreesmogadishu you don’t taste the aubergine.

We just started buying bigger bags of stuff. Got 1kg of pasta from Tesco which has lasted weeks....

spiderlight · 25/04/2020 18:24

There were loads of them in our M&S last night, if that's any help!

custodiandiscount · 25/04/2020 18:25

that chilli looks amazing! I bet there's no aubergines in the supermarket now!

TheSmallAssassin · 25/04/2020 18:25

I'm a bit gob smacked that anyone weighs anything in pounds and ounces these days.

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 18:26

@PigletJohn we are growing them but the seedlings are far off being ready. We have a big vegetable patch in the garden and a greenhouse.

Thecatisboss · 25/04/2020 18:26

@JacobReesMogadishu the aubergine can't be tasted it's just a base flavour. I'm not keen on aubergine as a flavour either.

SE13Mummy · 25/04/2020 18:29

If you're in SE13 you can have the two aubergines we got in our local veg box delivery!

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 18:30

I’m miles away in Scotland, thanks though 😊

@Fredthedoggie I work at a ferry port with HGVs coming in & they are not coming in with one driver only. Depending on distance, two (or even three, sometimes) drivers are common, & some drivers are even bringing their wives with them still! 🙄

niki26 · 25/04/2020 18:30

An aubergine was the only think missing from my delivery this morning!

CountFosco · 25/04/2020 18:33

Rather ironically I'm a scientist so spend the hours between 9 and 5 constantly thinking in metric. But my Mum taught me to cook in lbs and ounces and so I still do. Most recipes work better in imperial anyway (Victoria sponge: 3:6:6:6).

Inthemuckheap · 25/04/2020 18:37

I got 2 aubergines from Ocado this afternoon. Moussaka tomorrow night Smile

No diet coke though Sad

handbagsatdawn33 · 25/04/2020 18:39

I've been lucky in getting aubergines, but I find that courgettes can be substituted for them in many recipes.
They are also a lot cheaper.

LunariaAlba · 25/04/2020 18:39

@ScrimpshawTheSecond the black vegetable market Grin
I haven't bought an aubergine in years. No feckin need. They're good for very little.

LunariaAlba · 25/04/2020 18:41

courgettes ick

Craftycorvid · 25/04/2020 18:52

Got some beauties in our local Asian supermarket. 🍆🍆 (That is a literal use of the aubergine emoji). Weirdly, in addition to the yeast famine, we have a local molasses famine?!

FallonSwift · 25/04/2020 18:53

I was thinking about the mix between metric and imperial today. I use cm and metres for measuring my garden but I can't translate that into using it for a person's height - it's still feet and inches.

I use grams and kilos for food and garden stuff like soil and gravel and sand, but someone's weight in kilos means nothing - I have to use stones and pounds.
