To think no one is stockpiling fucking aubergines

I know it’s not a big deal. But we’re shielding DD so getting food deliveries and it’s such a pain in the arse only being able to order 3 of anything.

I understand for high demand items it might be necessary to limit items but surely some common sense should be applied?

The raisins is kids baking again! I made rock buns and scones last week now I've run out!

Madcats · 25/04/2020 18:55

OP if you have any gastropubs/non-chain restaurants near(ish) to you, have a look at their twitter feed. Many are promoting their suppliers (who have switched to doing a bit of home delivery).

Candodad · 25/04/2020 19:05

I’m guessing they priories what to deliver and they aren’t high on the list. My local Sainsbury’s hasn’t had fresh ginger and is always low on peppers. #firstworldproblems

TooMinty · 25/04/2020 19:05

I love aubergine. Our local Lidl has plenty, can you text a neighbour to get you some and leave on your doorstep?

WillowySnicket · 25/04/2020 19:07

They're super easy to grow! I grew some last year, my DC merrily dug and re-dug them up and they thrived. V sunny spot needed and you can start stockpiling your own!

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 19:08

@WillowySnicket we are growing, they’re not ready yet though.

That chilli is delicious!! Must make it again.

Our local posh farm shop has aubergines, luckily. We love them. Sympathy, OP.

drumandthebass · 25/04/2020 19:15

That burnt aubergine chilli is amazing. I'm not a vegetarian and neither are my fussy children but we all love this. Just make sure the aubergine is completely softened before you add it. The first time I made this my children didn't realise it was meat free, and certainly didn't know there was aubergine in it.

Ditheringdooley · 25/04/2020 19:17

Also the supermarkets are focussed on key lines atm, which doesn’t include things like fennel, aubergine etc - so that’s why you’re prob struggling to find them at the moment.

rosegoldwatcher · 25/04/2020 19:21

I used two to make Brinjal Bhaji this week. The recipe required them to be baked in the oven until soft. One of them exploded!
The dish was good though.

Westfacing · 25/04/2020 19:22

I'm an Aubergina! Love 'em 🍆🍆

underneaththeash · 25/04/2020 19:22

There were hundreds (well maybe a slight exaggeration - but definitely over 50) aubergines in Waitrose today at 2pm. I could not get any last week.

underneaththeash · 25/04/2020 19:23

I've only ever managed to grow 3 small aubergines and I've been trying for 3 years.

lowlandLucky · 25/04/2020 19:24

Monday nights Dinner is sorted, Burnt aubergine chilli. Cant wait

Fromthebirdsnest · 25/04/2020 19:27

i bloody love aubergines , LOVE aubergine parmigiana i veganise it but must admit the original one i did before being vegan was better , and moussaka is amazing ! we get a fruit and veg box from a local produce supplier and they have add ons such as aubergines , mange tout, asparagus etc etc all very reasonably priced maybe look into that ? they do contactless delivery's and also a local restaurant is now supplying pasta , flour , tinned tomatoes etc , i brought loads of gluten free as im ceoliac and had struggled to get any x

Whenwillthisbeover · 25/04/2020 19:30

Pasta in Tesco and Morrisons this week. Whole aisles of loo roll. Morrisons has split enormous sacks of flour and weighed out individual 1kilo bags. Tesco even had large bottles of.......hand sanitiser this morning at 6am. One each permitted, fair.

I haven’t, however, seen an aubergine in weeks and weeks.

santm · 25/04/2020 19:31

It's hardly the end of the world. Loads of other veggies out there.

Chillipeanuts · 25/04/2020 19:34

We couldn’t get baby corn for our stir fry. Presumably anything that usually comes in from overseas is being limited atm?

mumwon · 25/04/2020 19:37

@CountFosco get another type of pasta or macaroni it wont count or a different make - I did this by accident with evap milk!

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 25/04/2020 19:40

Madcats, yes, I buy aubergines from my local restaurant

(Also eggs, flour, yeast etc)

TheLightGetsIn · 25/04/2020 19:41

I did actually get an aubergine in our order this week, but it was a sub for the aubergine I actually ordered and it cost £2.99. Which I think is...excessive.

Regretsandregrets · 25/04/2020 19:53

My daughter bought 3 aubergines for some dish and left them in kitchen and i knew she would just waste them so I made a lovely potato aubergine curry with 2 of them and served them with fresh home made chapatis...3rd one ended up in the bin. There is only that much 2 people can eat.

GlomOfNit · 25/04/2020 19:57

chillipeanuts OP wasn't saying it was the end of the world! But there are no other vegetables quite like aubergines and if you need aubergines for a recipe, you can't really substitute and hope it'll be the same.

I started stockpiling aubergines years ago when Brexit ... I experimented with griddling then freezing slices. Not great for texture... you can griddle them and jar in oil though. I tend to get a bit twitchy without at least one in the fridge so I tend to buy one or two whenever I see them. I honestly haven't been pinching yours though, OP! (I don't do online shopping for a start.) I use them in Near Eastern, North African and Japanese dishes (and if that doesn't earn me a MN Wnaky Badge then I don't know what will). Favourites include a tamarind and aubergine dish, Iranian lamb and aubergine stew, and baba ganoush.

Loads round here though. I'm only going into a large supermarket every couple of weeks and the only thing they (Waitrose) were short of when I last went, were sweet peppers. I'm assuming a supply chain issue in Spain. I can get them in local independent village shops and the local 'farm' shop (aka overpriced deli) for a price, though. OP, can a friend get you some? Sometimes things will be available in store but not online.

GlomOfNit · 25/04/2020 19:58

Sorry sorry! NOT Chillipeanuts, that was santm

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 19:59

Mmm, I love baba ghanoush. Hopefully once restrictions are lifted I’ll get more and can make some.
