I've always loved crispy fried onions in a sandwich with butter and soft bread and I also love salad cream in a sandwich, usually with cheese.

I wasn't hungry enough for one of each and couldn't decide between the 2 fillings, so I put both the onions and the salad cream in the one sandwich.

Wow!😲

It was amazing.

I'd think you'd need to eat it as soon as it's made so the crispy onions don't go soft, but it's well worth trying 😋

Share your favourite sandwich filling with me to give me some more inspiration.

Any one else got any weird combinations, and how did you stumble upon it?

Also pastrami, gherkins, cheddar and mustard. Genius!

Ineverdidmind · 25/04/2020 08:11

Thickly spread Philadelphia cheese, brinjal pickle (spicy asian aubergine chutney) and cucumber.

Heaven.

Deathraystare · 25/04/2020 08:13

I think I would love those crispy onions in a crusty baguette with veggie sausage and creamed horseradish. Ooh look at me getting 'chef-y'

TheGriffle · 25/04/2020 08:17

Egg mayo mixed with chopped crab sticks is surprisingly delicious.

I also like grated cheese and grated carrot mixed with mayo.

Horehound · 25/04/2020 08:19

Salad cream is great. I love it on a ham sandwich.
When I was little and my gran homemade crinkle cut chips and me and my brother would mix up salad cream with tomato sauce to dip the chips Into ...soooo good!

Jammydodger1981 · 25/04/2020 08:23

Peanut butter and sandwich pickle or roast chicken and blue cheese, toasted so the cheese is melted. It really stinks the kitchen out though!

butterpuffed · 25/04/2020 08:23

Peanut butter, marmite and cheese

threesenoughthanks · 25/04/2020 08:24

You can't beat a good butty. My brother as a teen used to have a cold spaghetti Bolognese and mayo sandwich.....was never tempted to try that one though!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/04/2020 08:25

I love toasted cheese and onion sandwiched with salad cream - but I've never seen these crispy inions.

Now I want some . . .

RickOShay · 25/04/2020 08:33

I love sandwiches. One of my favourites is a cauliflower cheese sandwich. Lots of butter obvs.

minmooch · 25/04/2020 08:33

Just spent half an hour discussing with dp our best sandwiches. Too many to share but now feel very sad that we didn't buy any bagels in our weekly shop yesterday.

Fluffybutter · 25/04/2020 08:35

I hate those crispy onions , they repeat on me for hours !

nevernotstruggling · 25/04/2020 08:35

Stilton, sliced apple and mango chutney. With toasted bread obviously

Sarahandco · 25/04/2020 08:40

Biscotti crunchy biscuit spread.

Powerlessstepmum · 25/04/2020 08:53

No way.
Take two slices of bread, butter them.
On one slice spread (the order is important for logistical reasons) Marmite then salad cream. On the other slice of bread, peanut butter then Bovril. Sandwich together and off you go!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 25/04/2020 08:56

Ok- bear with me. H is Persian and he likes cheese and mint sandwiches. Yes, slices of cheddar with mint leaves. Its surprisingly delicious.

dogsdinnerlady · 25/04/2020 08:57

Low carb version, two slices of cheddar with cucumber, salt and Hellman's in between. Brilliant, no bread so no calories Grin.

Singlebutmarried · 25/04/2020 08:59

@Knowhowufeel2 I’ll see your onion bits in salad cream (which is lush) and raise you bacon bits in thousand island dressing.

Try it

The thousand island goes well with the onion bits too

viques · 25/04/2020 09:03

Salad cream with salad is foul BUT I used to work with someone who always made the most amazing potato salad for communal lunches, it was almost like a mashed potato but wasn't. I tried so hard to copy it, cut the potato small, using supermarket Mayo not hellemans, chopping the spring onions the other way. I eventually locked her in the stockroom until she coughed up the recipe asked her nicely what the secret was and it was salad cream.

RIP Mary, your potato salad preserves your memory.

Years ago when the trains were still British Rail, I discovered sandwich nirvana on a train journey to Scotland. Blue cheese, slices of pear and mayo with a bit of tarragon in it. Sounds weird....utter bliss!

Laiste · 25/04/2020 09:06

OMG Sandwich Spread!! Shock I'd forgotten all about that. I love it! Years since i've had any. They still sell it?

Best sandwich? Chip butty. On white, with decent butter and either ketchup or HP sauce.

caramac04 · 25/04/2020 09:07

White crusty cob ( or roll or whatever depending where you’re from), buttered and then filled with lightly fried liver (still bloody in the centre and very soft), salt and lemon juice. Delicious.

nowaitaminute · 25/04/2020 09:07

Yeah here in Ireland a favourite is cheese an onion crisps in bread or a roll!! It's sooooo good, you have to have butter too!! REAL butter, not the fake shite!

thisislovelyme · 25/04/2020 09:08

Well I've been very much enjoying this thread. DS (7) was trying to distract me telling about his dream and how to get wolves to eat fish but I managed to stay with the thread just about.

I have 2 to share with you:

Crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato with leerdamer cheese slice on white bread or toast

Cheese salad made thus: finely chopped cucumber, tomato and red/spring onion, grated mature cheddar, brought together with equal amounts of salad cream and mayonnaise.

If I make a sandwich with salad cream but then worry I haven't added quite enough salad cream, I add a dollop on the side of my plate for dipping. Anyone else do that? It works well for those sandwich edges where the salad cream has not quite reached.

MrsMGE · 25/04/2020 09:12

Someone here said cottage cheese - try fresh baguette, cottage cheese, sliced cucumber and ketchup. My friend loves this combination, I thought it would be rubbish until I tried it and it IS amazing!
