I've always loved crispy fried onions in a sandwich with butter and soft bread and I also love salad cream in a sandwich, usually with cheese.

I wasn't hungry enough for one of each and couldn't decide between the 2 fillings, so I put both the onions and the salad cream in the one sandwich.

Wow!😲

It was amazing.

I'd think you'd need to eat it as soon as it's made so the crispy onions don't go soft, but it's well worth trying 😋

Share your favourite sandwich filling with me to give me some more inspiration.

Any one else got any weird combinations, and how did you stumble upon it?

Cheddar, beetroot, salt and vinegar crisps and salad cream.

Sandwich of champions!

Takes me back to being a kid - hot crinkle cut chips with BBQ sauce in fresh bread and butter sandwich. Had a hankering for a chip sandwich when I was really sick and it was fantastic!

beautifulmonument · 25/04/2020 06:23

@ALittleBitofVitriol salad cream is not nice. You're not missing anything!

ShirleyPhallus · 25/04/2020 06:25

Sorry OP, you’d be too full up on a single sandwich to have added cheese to it, so you stuck with crispy onions and salad cream?

I don’t think I’ve ever met someone with such a tiny appetite outside of MN. Are you a sparrow?

A lasagne sandwich is king of all.

Theredjellybean · 25/04/2020 06:29

Marmite and honey.... Produces unique sweet salty taste full of unami..
Sandwiches or toast.. Bliss

Ha, we're looking at moving to the States and are considering bulk buying Salad Cream from Amazon - totally worth it, CANNOT live there without it.

OP, we actually do a similar mixture but for a lazy dinner; crisp(y) onions, cheese, salad cream, and PASTA.

TKAAHUARTG · 25/04/2020 06:47

I can get salad cream in my local supermarket (US) I love the stuff.

Sparklfairy · 25/04/2020 06:48

@ShirleyPhallus surely it depends when she ate it. As a meal, yes, sparrow like. As I've been doing a snack shortly after a meal because you are bored fancy it, I kind of get where she's coming from.

I keep eating things because they're 'there'. GAH

PippaPegg · 25/04/2020 06:52

The humble ham, cheddar and mayo.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/04/2020 06:53

Nah @Sparklfairy, even as a snack I could get some cheese down me

KatherineJaneway · 25/04/2020 06:54

someone on my local (US) neighborhood website used "19" so you are very lucky to not have to endure that really

Reminds me of Paul Hardcastle.

Luzina · 25/04/2020 06:54

If you're in the USA salad cream is a bit like miracle whip, although salad cream is a bit sharper tasting.

If you like salad cream try Heinz sandwich spread. White bread, butter, sandwich spread and ham is delicious.

Lefkosia · 25/04/2020 06:54

Salad cream is ambrosia. I'm too lazy to put much effort into sandwiches so I just have really naice ham, absolutely smothered in the cheapest salad cream money can buy. Cheap salad cream is tangy (tang? Tangy?) instead of creamy like the pricey stuff.

TKAAHUARTG · 25/04/2020 06:58

I don’t think miracle whip is like salad cream, you can taste the chemical aftertaste in miracle whip. Nigella did a recipe with it in the 90s when you could buy it in the UK. It was not good.

JudyCoolibar · 25/04/2020 07:01

Do you mean salad cream? If so, YABU. If, however, you mean mayonnaise, you may well have a point.

Crispy bacon, mayonnaise and avocado in a sandwich is delicious.

Carrie7469 · 25/04/2020 07:06

Walkers cheese and onion crisps on white bread with loads of butter.

Beetroot, mayonnaise and salt.

Stilton, cucumber and salad cream is amazing.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/04/2020 07:07

Salad cream is the work of the devil, for those who don't know it! I remember a schoolmate using it as sun-tan lotion in the summer of 1974 and that's about all it is good for.

snappycamper · 25/04/2020 07:09

All sandwiches are better with toast than bread.

My favourite filling is crisps Grin

chocolatviennois · 25/04/2020 07:11

The hotel in the village I grew up in used to do bacon and banana sandwiches and they were yummy!

Wildery · 25/04/2020 07:11

Soft white bread, a slab of butter and then stuffed with salt and vinegar crisps. Crispy crisps.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/04/2020 07:13

Oh, current favourite sarnie under lock down is crisp back bacon with mashed avocado seasoned with salt, pepper, Tabssco and a touch of lime, in a sandwich of toasted wholemeal slathered with home-made mayo!? Ambrosia!

KatherineJaneway · 25/04/2020 07:16

Salad cream is great with cold pizza.

Deathraystare · 25/04/2020 07:16

Woooh! More uses for salad cream! Good news about the crispy onions too. I have tried and failed to do it myself. I can do raw, slightly cooked or burnt black. I won't hold my breath for a Michelin star...

NightIbble · 25/04/2020 07:18

My favourite is what DH and I call the Sunday Sandwich. Thick white bread with butter, bacon, fried egg, sausage, hash brown and tomato sauce!

Dumbie · 25/04/2020 07:18

Cream cheese and beetroot

Salad cream is grim. As is sandwich spread. The very mention of it made me want to wash my mouth out.
