I've always loved crispy fried onions in a sandwich with butter and soft bread and I also love salad cream in a sandwich, usually with cheese.

I wasn't hungry enough for one of each and couldn't decide between the 2 fillings, so I put both the onions and the salad cream in the one sandwich.

Wow!😲

It was amazing.

I'd think you'd need to eat it as soon as it's made so the crispy onions don't go soft, but it's well worth trying 😋

Share your favourite sandwich filling with me to give me some more inspiration.

Any one else got any weird combinations, and how did you stumble upon it?

OP posts:

Vinigar and ketchup sandwich on buttered bread.

roseinthedark · 25/04/2020 09:54

Leftover roast chicken , brioche bun, butter on both sides, thinly sliced red onion, and mango chutney!! The best toastie is cheese and tomato of course, red onion is welcome, butter is essential 😁

JellyfishandShells · 25/04/2020 09:59

I have seen that brand in shops before but never seen onions - sounds intriguing, looks like the sort of thing you put on nasi goreng ? In which case, I’m in.

I had retro yearning for a favourite sandwich filling of my childhood - sliced boiled egg and salad cream. Dear god, it was awful - salad cream is nasty. Time had drawn veil over the vinegar cack.

Oysterbabe · 25/04/2020 09:59

Potato waffle done in the toaster so you can have a potato waffle sandwich in minutes.

LokihasafryingPan · 25/04/2020 10:11

I love peanut butter and onion ring crisps on a sandwich! It's the best!
Don't try it with real onions though, it doesnt work.

Boobahs · 25/04/2020 10:11

Corned beef, cheese and mango chutney. Even better if made into a toastie on a Breville.

You're welcome.

Nottherealslimshady · 25/04/2020 10:14

Ooh I love those onions on a subway, never occured to me I could buy it! I want cucumber crispy onions and southwest sauce now!

Lozz22 · 25/04/2020 10:27

Peanut butter, cheese and branston pickle

Or cheese and onion crisps smushed between soft white buttered bread, has to be proper butter and dipped into salad cream

HuggedTheRedwoods · 25/04/2020 10:56

ooh a fried onion butty! But soft fried onions, none of this dry crispy stuff!

Haven't had one of those for years.. but a white loaf and bag of onions may find it in my shopping basket next time I venture out.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 25/04/2020 11:02

Marmite and philadelphia is a good sandwich.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 25/04/2020 11:03

Also op, are you seriously saying if you added cheese to your onion and salad cream sandwich, you would be too full to eat it?! Scoff

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 25/04/2020 11:03

Marmite and philadelphia is a good sandwich

Oooh I would never have thought of this. Gonna try that later!

ALittleBitofVitriol · 25/04/2020 11:05

@Pickles89 Grin thanks!

@TheVanguardSix Blush I had no idea, thanks!

EugenesAxe · 25/04/2020 11:07

I’ve only ever experienced one revolutionary sandwich filling and it was cottage cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and salad cream.

Weird that salad cream seems to be the zing in a lot of these winning combinations! Shame Heinz are talking of (or are actually) pulling it.

iklboo · 25/04/2020 11:13

A couple:

Turkey, pastrami, leerdammer cheese, mayo, French's mustard & gherkins on brown bread and in the toastie machine

Peanut butter, raspberry jam & chilli cheese

EngagedAgain · 25/04/2020 11:18

@Laiste
Yes you can still get sandwich spread.

The most revolting sandwich is the pp's slightly bloody liver (is that even safe to eat?

The weirdest I've ever heard of is pea sandwiches!

My favourites are (apart from cheese and onion crisp sandwich) are pretty big standard cheese, or ham or both together with lettuce and/or tomato, with mayo.
Tuna and cucumber, with mayo.
Boiled egg mashed up with salad cream and salad cress.

yelyah22 · 25/04/2020 11:19

You're disgusting but I applaud your dedication to sandwich joy 😂

My favourite is fish fingers, petit pois peas squashed onto the bread, and salad cream. So I'm no better.

EngagedAgain · 25/04/2020 11:19

Pretty BOG standard! Not big cheese..

Imstillskanking · 25/04/2020 11:24

You already lost me.

Talulahoopla · 25/04/2020 11:24

Now this is the kind of post I like to see during lockdown instead of all the negativity around what others are doing. Some fantastic ideas! Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 25/04/2020 11:28

My favourite sandwich fillings:

Cold roast chicken with white pepper and mayo
Bernard Matthew's Hamwich
Crisps!

Reallymissthegym · 25/04/2020 11:36

Fish fingers cheese and ketchup

Red onion, ham and cheese in a bowl microwave for 1 minute 30 and spread on thick white bread

Ham and chopped up picked onions with salad cream

Tuna, red onion, sweet corn and salad cream

Ready salted crisps and salad cream

Cheese, beetroot, crispy bacon and Branston pickle

Cheese, ham, beetroot and mayo

Candyflosscookie · 25/04/2020 11:54

Reading the thread and I just had to get up and make a peanut butter, cheese and tomato ketchup sandwich - mostly to remove the idea of the liver sandwich from my brain!! Grin

I like the classics Op: smoked salmon and cream cheese or avocado and bacon. Or blue cheese, bacon and maple syrup.

Although I think anything could be improved with some crispy onions (adds to Amazon wish list). Mmmmm. Also feeling inspired by some of the suggestions on this list and planning to try them. Makes a nice change from hysterical covid threads Wink

roseinthedark · 25/04/2020 12:04

@LokihasafryingPan I watched a video of someone trying peanut butter and raw onion sandwich, apparently it was a favourite of Ernest Hemingway's... she said it was quite delicious but I've not the courage to try!!

Blueuggboots · 25/04/2020 12:23

Ham, lettuce and good, French, mayonnaise.
