I've always loved crispy fried onions in a sandwich with butter and soft bread and I also love salad cream in a sandwich, usually with cheese.

I wasn't hungry enough for one of each and couldn't decide between the 2 fillings, so I put both the onions and the salad cream in the one sandwich.

Wow!😲

It was amazing.

I'd think you'd need to eat it as soon as it's made so the crispy onions don't go soft, but it's well worth trying 😋

Share your favourite sandwich filling with me to give me some more inspiration.

Any one else got any weird combinations, and how did you stumble upon it?

Brie and black grapes (although works with other coloured grapes as well)

-used to buy this combo from Boots years ago (not sure if they still do this).

Pinkarsedfly · 25/04/2020 07:21

Cold salmon and horseradish sauce.

Cold new potato and salad cream.

Onion bhaji and mango chutney.

BumTitTit25 · 25/04/2020 07:24

I love those crispy onions! Never occurred to me to look for a big bag. I'm going to see if I can get some on amazon!

Pinkarsedfly · 25/04/2020 07:24

Also, Boxing Day sandwich. Turkey, leftover stuffing, roasties, bread sauce, red cabbage, cranberry sauce, etc etc.

cheeseislife8 · 25/04/2020 07:29

Ooh I love thise onions! Going to try that.

DHs fave is mashed potato and coleslaw on a sub. I'm not convinced

JacobReesMogadishu · 25/04/2020 07:29

I’m partial to a mango chutney and Stilton sandwich.

Piccalino3 · 25/04/2020 07:30

Thanks OP, I'd forgotten about crispy onions. Doing my Ocado shop today so will add both the onions and salad cream. Looking forward to it!

MrsMGE · 25/04/2020 07:30

Bacon and garlic mushrooms on toast, that's my recent favourite.

ToastedHaMSandwich · 25/04/2020 07:33

Tuna , cheese and spring or red onion in a freshly baked white baguette and a bag of crisps. Heaven

ToastedHaMSandwich · 25/04/2020 07:34

Tuna must be mixed with mayo ...forgot that bit. And baguette with lashings of butter which melts into the warm bread

MrsMGE · 25/04/2020 07:35

Also, crisps + jalapeños sandwiches, thank me later Grin

Tartare sauce is a must in a fish finger sandwich!

Dadq · 25/04/2020 07:35

Smoked mackerel, cucumber, horseradish.

Btw, salt & vinegar crisps make a decent crispy onion substitute in sandwiches. Again, you need to eat it very quickly!

Wincarnis · 25/04/2020 07:35

Chopped boiled ham, chopped hard boiled egg and chopped onion - mixed up with salad cream and spread on soft white sliced bread.

Bakedpotatoandgin · 25/04/2020 07:37

Ooh I like lots of strange sandwich combinations. Some of my favourites are: peanut butter and dried apricot; pb and tomatoes on white, slightly sweet barm; Stilton and pear on toasted wholemeal; hummus and beetroot; potato salad and salt and vinegar crisps; cheese and coleslaw; tahini and grated apple.

Oysterbabe · 25/04/2020 07:37

Peanut butter and cheese.

Sunnydaysarecoming · 25/04/2020 07:42

Tuna mayonnaise with tomato chutney and raw red onion is delicious, the best sandwich I’ve had! Brie and grape sandwiches are a close second, on some decent thick white bread :)

MoonBaby1 · 25/04/2020 07:53

Hot crossed bun, lots of salty butter and maple cured bacon.

TheVanguardSix · 25/04/2020 07:54

Waiting on tenderhooks

It's tenterhooks: "By the mid-18th century, the phrase on tenterhooks came to mean being in a state of tension, uneasiness, anxiety, or suspense, i.e. figuratively stretched like the cloth on the tenter."

I only point this out because as a teen in the States, I always said tenderhooks as well.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 25/04/2020 07:56

salad cream - yabu
& never tried them, but the onion things look pretty vile too.

My favourite sandwich is bacon and avocado.
Avocado chopped or sliced and warmed in the pan in the bacon fat.
Wholemeal bread.
Heaven.

Occasionally add tomato.

Boulshired · 25/04/2020 07:59

The packet crispy onion taste very similar to crisps and I have eaten crisps (most flavours) and salad cream sandwiches for decades. So I know I would like your combination.

Tobebythesea · 25/04/2020 08:00

Mango chutney, apple and Brie. Devine

SunshineCake · 25/04/2020 08:01

Potato salad sandwich, or more probably just new potatoes, is such an obvious sandwich as most love a chip butty. How have I not thought of this before ? My son has been using left over bolognese in a sandwich and says it is like having a burger.

All ^ just posted to get on this thread as I will need to try some of these.

*@Knowhowufeel2 - I have to know, are the onions from the packet warm in your sandwich? Not sure cold sounds as tasty.

bellabasset · 25/04/2020 08:01

Fish fingers, tartare sauce & crisp lettuce in a wrap.

Homemade granary with avocado crisp bacon topped with tomatoes

Homemade granary with grated cheese and coleslaw, or prawn and coleslaw or turkey and coleslaw

Cold sliced sausages with fried red onion and mustard

Tuna and mashed egg with tomato

Mashed egg with watercress

If you have left over chicken, mix it with mayo, yogurt and tandoori powder, crisp lettuce, add mango chutney

GenevaMaybe · 25/04/2020 08:04

I do love a ham, cheese and coleslaw sandwich. Occasionally I add cheese & onion tayto crisps which elevates the whole thing. Had to be on white batch bread with salted butter.
Also good but in a different way is Brie and dried apricots in a pretzel-bread roll.
I do like crab mayo with cress on a brioche roll too

MordredsOrrery · 25/04/2020 08:06

You need to add crunchy peanut butter to achieve perfection.
