Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

We don't flush if it's a wee (day or night) until a few wees build up. My husband's research looks at water resources. It's very wasteful to flush after a wee!

PositiveVibez · 17/04/2020 22:21

Perhaps those who don't flush are on a meter

I'm not and we never flush at night. I think it's a habit we picked up from DD being younger. Her room was on one side of the bathroom and we valued our evenings after she was asleep too much to risk waking her up.

Why is it gross? I don't understand.

rosiejaune · 17/04/2020 22:22

Install a composting toilet. Then it never needs flushing.

We don't flush it (day or night) unless there is faeces in it or it smells noticeably. It is such a waste of water (and drinkable water, at that).

barnabybenny · 17/04/2020 22:22

Of course wee smells, think I’ve heard everything now! Flushing or not is a personal choice but let’s not pretend it doesn’t smell. We flush but our kids sleep through anything, at my friend’s house they ask people not to flush in the night. If it woke the kids up then I’d reconsider, I hadn’t really considered the water waste though.

Slith · 17/04/2020 22:22

I never flush at all - I have a composting toilet.

Bella2020 · 17/04/2020 22:22

Oh my word. I'm surprised at the numbers of people who don't flush at night. Always, always, always flush in our house, no matter the time of day or night. Always have done and always will.

Lalala89 · 17/04/2020 22:23

We also don't flush pee at night 🤷‍♀️

Actionhasmagic · 17/04/2020 22:23

Don’t flush at night

Grumpos · 17/04/2020 22:23

We don’t for two reasons

  1. water wastage
  2. waking up young children in the night

Each to their own but I’m not personally offended by a wee in the loo. It’s my partner and he’s not stinky and neither am I - perhaps try drinking more water if it’s particularly pungent!

Of all the things you have to experience in adult life - Changing nappies, potty training, period leakage, post birth piles, picking up dog mess, kids vomming in the car, helping elderly relatives change underwear etc etc etc - a few midnight wees just seem really tame Grin

roarfeckingroar · 17/04/2020 22:25

So so nasty

Kahlua4me · 17/04/2020 22:25

We don’t flush at night at all - what a waste of water! Whoever gets up first will flush it.

Flixsfoilball · 17/04/2020 22:25

It's absolutely gross. I lived in an HMO and some dirty fucker did this - I was often first up in the morning and used to heave at the stench of some virtual strangers stagnant piss every morning 🤬

It's marginally better in a family situation but unless flushing will wake people up it's still absolutely disgusting letting it stew all night

BunnytheHoneyBee · 17/04/2020 22:25

But easily avoided! Whether you consider yourself “stinky” or not Hmm

I suppose it depends how close your bedrooms all are to the bathroom though...

Grumpos · 17/04/2020 22:25

The other thing is if you drink a lot of water then your wee is almost clear for most of the day! I have to pee every half an hour bc of the amount of water I’m drinking - It’d be criminal to the environment to flush after every clear wee!

Costacoffeeplease · 17/04/2020 22:26

Don’t flush during the night and only every second wee during the day. We live in a region in extreme danger of desertification so are very aware of wasting water unnecessarily. If you are well and hydrated your wee shouldn’t smell or stain, it should be the colour of straw, a lot of people on this thread could do with drinking more water

jmh740 · 17/04/2020 22:26

I dont flush in the ensuite if dd and oh are sleeping

Walkingwild · 17/04/2020 22:26

I just hold it in for my morning shower

SpillTheTea · 17/04/2020 22:27

I'm surprised at the amount of people who don't flush. I personally couldn't leave the bathroom without doing it.

itsmschanandlerbong · 17/04/2020 22:28

As a teenager when I stayed at DHs house when he lived with his parents I was warned not to flush at night. I found it so strange because my family and extended family always flush. It just seems so strange to me why you wouldn't. We live in Scotland do water bills are fixed and built into our council tax. Why let urine or shit stagnate? Surely flushes aren't loud enough to wake others in the house and if they wake up with a flush why wouldn't they wake up with someone moving around to go to the toilet?

Mojitomogul · 17/04/2020 22:29

Our wee is really always quite clear as we drink a lot of water.. never flush during the night unless it's a poo, would wake every one up! It doesnt smell and then we just flush in the morning, never been a problem

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 17/04/2020 22:29

Wait. Do you all wake up to pee at night?Shock

Macncheeseballs · 17/04/2020 22:29

It's just wee

Costacoffeeplease · 17/04/2020 22:29

Well one day soon we may all have to ration our flushes, I’d rather start now and delay that day

It’s like people washing towels after each wash, criminally wasteful

Costacoffeeplease · 17/04/2020 22:30

After each use!

Glowcat · 17/04/2020 22:31

Flushing uses up lots of water. I don’t flush wee overnight. I also drink lots of water so it doesn’t smell strongly.
